    I was determined to build my own chicken coop and not to use a kit from a farm store or online since they are expensive and of lesser quality than what I wanted. If you watched Wranglerstar build his chicken coop, you will probably recognize my chicken coop design. I didn’t set out to build the same one on purpose, but when I found the detailed plans to build this coop, it was hard to resist. The plans were EXTREMELY helpful to keep me on task and organized. I would have easily wasted $17 (or more!) worth of materials trying to figure it out on my own, so I think the $17 for the plans is a wise investment for someone who is not an experienced builder.
    You can build your own backyard chicken coop or homestead chicken coop for your laying hens, and do it with much higher quality for less than what it costs to purchase a kit from a farm store or online.
    My chickens seem to really like the coop, and I have not had any major issues with it so far. It certainly isn’t a million-dollar coop, but it is far beyond what a chicken actually needs. It looks nice and will look good in your back yard if you are looking to build a backyard coop or just add a nice-looking coop to your farm or homestead.
    2020 really was “the year of the chicken” as many people went out in search of chicks or juvenile hens to add to their homestead or backyard to help them become more self-sufficient. Also, I think people just had more time for projects like these during the pandemic or stay at home orders (a.k.a. quarantine).
    I’d love to hear your thoughts, questions, or comments about the coop! Leave those in the comments below and be sure to click that “like” button!

    We bought these coop plans too! We are about 75% complete and are so glad we did. We used linoleum on the floor too, it’s a great way to extend the life of your coop. I’m currently uploading part 1 of our build. Thanks for the video.

    Your chickens like thst box best because it is the darkest. You nesting boxes should be placed on a wall that get no to very little sun exposer and even better would be to install durable cleanable (plastic -think tore mud flaps material cut into vertical slits) curtains to block out more light. Your chickens will thank you for it and produce better eggs because of it. 😊

      Thanks for the comment Johndeere5065! That is a good point to consider. I’ve seen others put actual metal roofs on the run, but not sure I want to go to that extent.

    Love your coop with exception to the entry of nesting box’s . If I t was mine I would have drop down entry instead of lift up entry. The chicken are very startled with the lift up entry. ❤😊

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Fludrby. We don't have any problems with them being startled, but a drop down door would be nice so that It didn't have to be held up or propped up while gathering eggs. We also wait until evening to collect eggs so that the hens are all done laying for the day and no one is disturbed while they are in the nest boxes.

    If you are not going to free range you need 10 Sqft/chicken in your run. Also, get yourself an automatic chicken door to save you from having to go inside the coop run and bend down as that will get old soon, and a pain in the back (pun intended) 😬

      Thanks Chocho. These chickens free range every day and don't ever eat all of their food. If they have their way, they will eat grass, bugs, and other forage all day and only return to the coop to roost. I only have to add food into their pan every couple of days. Thank you for the comment!

      @@PoplarRidge Thank you for the quick reply, did you stay at the 5'x6' because it says fits 12. I have 15 chickens for a backyard coop and hope 6'x8' will be big enough.

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  ปีที่แล้ว

      If they’re only sleeping in it they can fit a whole lot more. Mine have access to a large pasture and/or free range so they only lay eggs and sleep in the coop. I added more roosts to accommodate more chickens. 30 is about the max if used that way.

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Cost is hard for me to determine because I used so many reclaimed materials I had laying around here. But, I think that this can be built for about the same or less than a prefabricated coop from a farm store and you get a much better end result.

    • @denvermason2467

      I went to Home Depot today with parts list in hand and priced everything out. As of today ( 3/31/22) the total cost is $1,030 before taxes. I'm starting the build this weekend but will likely go with the tin roof instead of the shingles, which should shave off about $100. The downloaded plans are very clear and easy to follow. Looks like a well thought out project. 👍

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally would make it as big as you can. Of course, money, time, and space are all factors for that. Also depends if you let them free range or not? If not, bigger is better. If you do free range, that may be adequate. My fenced in run is about 8’x16’.

  • @jeffbren2151
    @jeffbren2151 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Made me cringe I. The first few seconds.you should first spend a few extra bucks to make the run human height so you can get in there. Also find a way to open the coop without having to go into the run (like a lever or pull system). Other wise love your set up, chicken must be happy (just sucks for humans).

    • @PoplarRidge
      @PoplarRidge  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jeff. I appreciate the comments, but some things you probably weren't considering. This coop was built during the height of pandemic lockdowns here and I chose to use what I had on hand. Definitely things I would do differently. I started out with no covering at all on the run, but quickly found there were days I wanted to keep the chickens in the run, so I put the makeshift fencing on top. Ability to open from the outside wasn't originally needed as I could easily walk in when it wasn't covered by the plastic fencing. It will get corrected at some point, but that's just a lesson learned for me as a new chicken owner. I openly recognized it as a negative of my set up -- hoping to show others what NOT to do as well as what I do like about my set up. Hope you'll keep following along.
