    I had so much stress with my ex that my adrenal gland wasn’t producing cortisol at all!The Dr put me on mega doses of steroids 4x daily for a year!I gained 40lbs.and I was always around 100 before that! I think it’s happening again. I’m going to grow holy basil. I’m starting indoors! Thank you!

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am actually woking on a video on how to harvest basil. You would harvest the same way as regular basil, cut stems several inches from the top right above the new grow areas (these will make new stems) if flowering, keep plucking the flowers to support new growth. You can harvest throughout the year and dry thought the year.

    Great video! I grew a Tulsi Basil this year and have been using it as a tea. I hear conflicting info about letting the plants flower. Some say the flower makes tea even more flavorful, some say letting the plant flower will cause it to stop producing leaves. What do you think? Do you ever let the plants flower? Thanks! 😊

      I grow tulsi and allow it to flower because I also have bees and they LOVE it. It does, like all other basils, stop them from bushing out but I sue both flower and leaf in my tea. If you were going for bulk I would suggest pinching flowers off foe the first month of two and you will have a very bushy plant of leaves who will then all flower. I have a lot of plants in one area so same effect.

  • @giverny28

    I am having so much trouble growing this variety.
    I planted it in a "tea garden" in a food forest garden model under a crab apple tree. Other tea herbs like mints, chamomile, lavender, thymes, oregano, sage, and many edible flowers are growing well, but not my holy basil. 😕
    I thought i'd direct sew, like other basils, but none came up.
    I also direct seeded in a few tomato beds. Again, none came up.
    Even though I am well into the season, I decided to try again, but this time in start trays inside under grow lights. I am finally seeing sprouts. I'm not sure why I am having so many issues, especially since my other tea herbs are doing so well.
    Is this a plant that just does better started indoors?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a really good question. I have always started mine in doors, on a heat mat. Basil needs fairly warm temps to germinate (70 F) I’d recommend starting in doors at least to get them to germinate.

      Look up 👆 a few comments. Someone posted a place to order a variety that self-seeds. We have that variety, given to us by my cousin. It's wonderful. I wish I had found this video two days ago. We got out first freeze last night (way too early this year) and they froze. 😩

    Can Basil stay outdoors in winter?

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally no. Basil is a warm-weather herb that is sensitive to cold temperatures. It is not frost-tolerant and may suffer damage or die if exposed to freezing temperatures for extended periods. Therefore, in most regions, it is recommended to grow basil as an annual.
      If you live in a mild climate where temperatures rarely dip below freezing, basil may survive outdoors during the winter with some additional care. However, it is still advisable to provide some protection, such as covering the plant with a frost cloth or bringing it indoors during particularly cold nights.
      In colder climates, it is best to grow basil as an annual or consider bringing it indoors for the winter. Basil can be successfully grown indoors as a potted plant, provided it receives sufficient sunlight (at least 6-8 hours of direct or bright indirect light per day) and proper care. Raw fresh basil 💚

    • @OrganicBackyardGardening
      @OrganicBackyardGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! It's true that fresh herbs often have a more potent flavor and aroma than dried ones. Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is known for its beneficial properties such as reducing stress and promoting relaxation. While the terpenes in fresh basil may be more volatile, dried basil can still be a great option for making tea or adding flavor to dishes. However, the quality of the dried herb can make a big difference in its flavor and effectiveness. It's important to choose high-quality, organic, and fresh dried herbs whenever possible. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I hope you find a way to enjoy the benefits of holy basil that works best for you!
