  • How to replace your iPad Mini 2 touch screen and LCD. This is an advanced level repair. There are many things that can go wrong during this repair and it is not recommended for beginners. One of the main issues is the sensitivity at the bottom end of the digitizer. It must sit perfectly and be insulated from interference or it tends to malfunction over time if not immediately.

    Nice walkthrough. I used playing cards to slide under the LCD and slid them down towards the bottom to put less stress on the LCD.

      Thank you. Yep, to this day it always makes me cringe when I hear the adhesive lifting away because it sounds so much like it's cracking.

    First thing... Awesome video and very well narrated. I'd just like to add three things that could go wrong with this repair... 1) cleaning the old adhesive from the frame is probably the MOST important thing to stress for many reasons. You may not be able to see small glass shards but they WILL break the new digitizer. 2) the fpc connector that the digitizer connects to is VERY fragile and can be damaged easily without your knowledge. Pry from the battery side really slow. and 3) Test the digitizer BEFORE you install the majority of the screws. It's a lot less of a headache when you don't have to redo EVERYTHING all over again because something wasn't lined up right. Thank you for this great tutorial!

    I watched a number of other videos, because this was my first attempt at an iPad Mini 2. I must say this was also the very best video. They were actually working with a Mini 2 instead of a Mini which is quite a bit different than a Mini 2. Great Job!

    I didn't have the tape you used so I didn't put any tape on mine and of course phantom clicks constantly. I took the screen back off and put plain electrical tape and it has been working perfect.
    BTW, compressed air is a must!

    I watched this all the way to the end, and when he was blowing all the dust off of the screen before putting the digitizer on, I thought that he hadn't blown all the dust off....... until I realised that my laptop screen is filthy and needs a dust!.
    Nice one buddy, I am about to enbark on changing my iPad mini 2 screen, and I'll watch this again until I am confident enough to know where each it of tape etc goes. Thank you very much.

    THIS iPad Mini 2 has different parts than the mini 2's in the other TH-cam Videos on the subject of changing the Digitizer. The screen replacement I bought has a different Ribbon connector and the plate that you take off to get to the connections is different too. I am now afraid to open up my Mini 2 for fear of exposing this particular insides and not having the right replacement part. Has no one else noticed this?. This is the best tutorial on the subject that I have seen so far, and it explains the old screen removal very well, but the different insides concerns me.

    I tried turning it on after taking off the digitizer and it is fine but I wanted to know if it's normal for the volume button to not want to change volumes on lock. it just shows like a sign that I am pressing it but I don't see it changing volumes. it is because I have removed the digitizer and when I put it back together it should work?

    Hey there, I would like to know if you've done a LCD replacement on one of these without breaking the glass and digitizer. I have a Mini 2 with it's original glass that is not cracked but the LCD is experiencing the infamous white lines issue. I have had experience replacing cracked glass, was not perfect but I know what to avoid now. But I need to know how to remove the digitizer without cracking it, thanks

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've done plenty and only broke the glass once on an iPad 2. Most of the details you'd want to know are provided in this video although I'd add one more. Dip your pry tool in isopropyl alcohol as this will make prying through the adhesive much easier. That said this is some thing that you have to be very careful with. I've seen a lot of technicians crack the glass the first time that they tried this. I can't guarantee anyones success of course but the keys are patience, precision, and heat.

      I read through the comments section there and it was comment after comment of people breaking the LCD trying to remove it. It is tricky for sure, but after watching your video I got it out quite easily. Now if only I had remembered to peel off the protective coating on the inside of the digitizer BEFORE I sealed it shut it would have been a 100% success.

    Question - the two thin strips of tape that you put back on the bottom of lcd - are these necessary? I somehow lost one of the strips. Can I just cut the one I have in half? Is there somewhere I can get another piece? Or can I just leave it out? (They're the things you peel off at 10:50 in the video) Thank you

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would replace them with something. You might try using Kapton tape. This tablet is prone to interference issues so most of that tape is there for a reason. You could try it without but if it causes problems youll have to open it up again.

      Hard to say for sure but most likely the screen is not connected properly, is defective, or the part that it plugs into was damaged during removal. The part on the logic board is extremely fragile and the gold "teeth" often fall of for no apparent reason other than poor design.

      +loridohn I have a link on my website from this page: gocellphonerepair.com/mini2 that goes to Etradesupply. Their Grade S and S+ are top notch as far as quality but some of their parts take a while coming from China. If you need it in a hurry you can find them on Ebay and Amazon but be sure to buy from someone with good feedback. Theres a lot of low quality stuff out there. Etechparts.com is good too although a bit on the pricey end.

    so i followed the directions except the "very important" disconnecting of the battery. I watched 5 other videos that didn't mention it at all so I thought I was doing it all right. Can anyone suggest what needs to happen if it won't power back up now? Is it possible that a defective replacement screen/IC chip could cause it not to restart? Or did I fry the battery?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Confirm that it shows up on iTunes when you connect it to a computer. If so then you most likely blew the backlight filter or diode. That requires a micro soldering repair which usually means you'll want to seek out a professional. Expect to pay about $50 which is what we charge. If the device doesn't show up on iTunes you have more serious problems.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair

      If you mean liability wise probably the biggest risk would be damaging the lcd. They are kind of expensive. Also with the minis damage to the digitizer connector is always a risk. It’s hard to say but I’d base this decision on experience and skill level. Also always remember to unplug the battery first and connect it last or you can kill the backlight filter/diode.

    just used this tutorial in 2019! The steps were easy enough but in the end I have some vertical lines near the middle of the screen. Any ideas what I may have done wrong? If I apply pressure to the area where the LCD is connected they disappear but as soon as i release the pressure they return. Can I just shove some electrical tape somewhere in there?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the connector. If it gets bent you might see this happen. Sometimes pressing down in the center will cause it to sort of bow up at the edges.

    • @camgard13
      @camgard13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go Cell Phone Repair I did disassemble down to the connector a few times after to make sure that it was seated the best it could be. I believe the issue is coming from the bottom of the LCD where the light is emitted. I ended up finding out where I needed the slightest amount of pressure and placed a bit of electrical tape there. After reassembling the iPad it appears fine besides very minor lines at the bottom that are hardly noticable. If I apply pressure to the screen vertical lines do reappear.
      Thanks for the video!

    My iPad is bent. I did the installation and it worked fine but there are gaps in three of the sides. Any suggestions. Do you think I should heat adhesive and set books on top overnight. I was also thinking about trying super glue. Should either of these produce ghost touches.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aw those are never fun. I don't think books or glue will do you much good. Gluing it will just keep the glass bent and therefore under stress. You can either take it apart, remove the logic board, and then try to straighten the housing or put in in some sort of fully enclosed case if it will even fit. It's aluminum alloy but still takes some decent force to get it back into shape. Enough that you could cause more problems trying to bend it as is.

      50% vinegar 50% water applied to a non-abrasive polishing cloth. Use as little as possible and be *extremely* careful. I can't say enough about how easy it is to scratch or otherwise damage the LCD. Fingerprints and adhesive are a pain to deal with.

    Do you have a procedure for ipad mni 1?

      In most cases yes. I realize that's not a clear answer but I've had a few that worked without adding tape.That's rarely the case though at least with suppliers who don't add it themselves. I don't have a Mini 1 on hand but if I come across one I'll be sure to make another video. It is practically identical and even the digitizers are compatible from 1st gen to 2nd. Different LCD though.

      Thanks! Will any other tape work as well as kaptan? Or will a thin piece of foil that is insulated from any electrical contacts?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well Kapton is recommended but you could probably use something else. It would have to be very thin and non-conductive so I wouldn't risk using any sort of foil tape. Maybe cellophane tape..? I haven't tried that though so I'm just speculating. Electricians tape would probably be too thick.

      I bought a roll of kaptan based on your reply, thanks. On ipad mini 1 and 2, do you recommend putting a single piece the entire width of the bottom of the LCD?

      +Dragon Fxfx Are you referring to the heat gun? That's what I used here. A hot plate would also work.

    What thickness polyimide (kapton) tape do you use to prevent ghosting?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question. The listing where I bought mine doesn't say anything about the actual thickness. It's easy enough to figure out the width but other than that I'd have to guess. In total probably 2.5 mil or so.

      What is the width of the kapton tape used to prevent ghosting? I'm buying supplies before opening the mini.

      The one that I use is 12mm.

      I use 5 mm Kapton and it is extremely thin is you don’t use kapton tape you will get ghosting cover the connector fully and the home button area

    I wish I knew not to throw magnets into garbage..I did found two, would I need all four because for some reason my iPad didn't work after repair...could be magnet issue?

      The magnets only purpose are Smart Cover related. They should not make any difference when the cover not present.

    Hi , if I forget to disconnect the battery before I disconnect the screen and touch screen , the iPad doesn't work, is that because I didn't disconnect the battery or the touch screen that I replaced doesn't work ?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it the touchscreen that isn't working or the LCD? If the latter I would suspect that the filter blew although you can try a hard reset first as sometimes that will turn it back on.

      Send it back. Without a cable it's not really a digitizer.

    Unfortunately cracked the LCD, it wasn’t y’all’s fault, but a stripped screw wouldn’t come out, and used a drill to drill it out, then opened it and it cracked cause it didn’t drill all of the way through

      Getting the screen to stay down requires precision, a clean surface, and good adhesive. The place that installed it should be willing to redo it for you.

    How many mm thick is your Kapton tape?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thick? Its very thin and while I dont have a good way to measure that the specs typically say 2.5 thousandths Inches. If you mean width it is 1/2 inch or about 13mm.

    • @Durka4life
      @Durka4life 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I meant the width...I have 1/4. Will I need to order 1/2 or will that be sufficient?

    What do I do if the screen broke because the iPad bent.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can try to straighten it-remove the logic board first!- or replace the housing but if the logic board itself was affected I would't put my money toward a replacement. PCBs are not designed to flex or bend much and even if it works now there is a good chance that it won't later on.

      You can restore the device. If it doesn't work, try the old screen to make sure it's not the screen and you can disconnect and reconnect the battery.
