hi sean, he's not 'mad' although some may argue he's crazy. I found Chopper to be a great storyteller - and a lot of fun to have a few drinks with at the pub. Despite what some puritans may claim - that he's a criminal blah blah blah - he is an Australian icon with a major Aussie award winning movie about his life. Multiple books. And his sense of humour is truly delightful. So yes - he may be a little bit mad - but aren't we all? And the most interesting people I know are kinda crazy :)
i distinctly remember the barrel pointing right at my face. it's not something one forgets. it was not pointed to the 'side' of my head as a comment here purports.
How you did that while remaining calm and your underwear dry is beyond me, I would have been scared half to death. Kudos to you, you are a very brave reporter!
Your one cool lady Renee i dont think i could of been so calm! even the other guy must be off his rocker letting chopper shoot a bottle out of his hand!!! ? There is something about chopper I can't help but like some parts to his personallity, not all, he did do some horrific crimes and nasty stuff to people, I was hooked on heroin for 4 years and it is a life changer of a drug and the people who sell it usually are the scum of the earth with no morals or humanity in there souls I don't think they deserve the justice that chopper gave them but I do understand where he's coming from.! what was your opinion of him after spending some time with him , he's clearly nuts haha
Can't say when - 1) I don't know where they are 2) if they are where I think they are it's a 6 hour drive away 3) if they aren't there then they are packed in another place I won't get to for a while :)
Patti Pat it's all good. Chopper's explanation of the event is in book 2. I've explained it many times. I don't busy myself with what people believe - that's up to them. I'm happy for people to draw whatever conclusions they like from what they see.
Chopper has died. The criminal perpetrator became a criminal commentator. He was a living legend despite what some pious judgemental types might say about him. And he was funny. Sitting in a pub, having a drink with him and listening to a few stories - the guy was entertaining. And he was privy to a side of life most of us only ever see in movies. It's a rare thing for a career criminal to die of old age. I wish his family all the very best and hope the media is kind to them.
I didn't find him to be any different on or off camera. He is exactly as he presents. He's wily, humorous and has some hard-won experience to add to his smarts. I'm not convinced he's mad tho...
yes. but when the trigger was pulled in my face, the cameraman put the camera down and said 'ok folks - that's enough' because he felt it had gone too far.
very nice of you to say so. interviewing is my favourite part of the production process. being heavily researched gives you all the confidence you need to speak with anyone on any level. add some technical knowledge to make the shooting and editing process easy for those crews and that's all the basics covered.
sure did ;) BTW - I got to interview Lemmy of Motorhead fame when I was a music journo (pre-TV). There are some people that really are important enuf to drop everything for a chance to caht with them. He was one of those people for me :)
Chapter 22 in Chopper's 2nd book Hits & Memories explains more about that day. I have explained it in previous comments, articles, TV ages etc. Quick summary: I wanted Chopper to explain how he won Russian Roulette against the Chinese mafia because his 'strategy' was to take 2 shots at his own head. When he loaded the gun & pulled the trigger, I didn't know I'd be going 2nd. I didn't believe he'd pull the trigger in my face. The cameraman called 'enough'. Chop said 'now the camera is off, I'll tell you how I won. An overly oiled barrel takes the weight of the bullet to the 3rd or 4th chamber - so the first 2 are clear.' Is it true? Maybe? Does it work every time. I doubt it.
***** is that the reaction you would have had? I ain't no panic merchant. Rabbits duck and still get shot. Your strategy is faulty. I didn't think he'd pull the trigger. And I ain't the type to freak out and faint.

Has to be one of if not my favorite interviews of ALL time, extremely well executed. I gotta say he seemed to open up to Rene very well, there was some serious chemistry between you guys, not in a sexual manner or anything like that, he just looked so comfortable throughout the interview and really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing :)
if you think he's nuts for thinking it is his duty to keep the rabbit population down, rabbits in australia are an invasive species and are wrecking havoc in australia.
Whew that was kinda tough too watch, holy. I've been robbed at gun point when I was younger, and it brought back those same moments of fear. You're a very brave person Renee.
Fair play to you Renee for keeping your cool at the end when he pointed a gun to your face. You seemed to have stayed extremely cool in your demeanor even though he didn't give you a choice. Must have been terrifying for you but you kept calm which I applaud you for. God knows how it would have went if you started to panic. I've only heard about Chopper today as I came across a scene from the film version (the stabbing) which then prompted me to search for more information about this man. Very interesting stuff and a small insight into his mind and his character. Thanks for sharing this with us!
I understand your point of view and others share it. I have not referred to him as a 'nihilistic thug' so you might have to check who said that. Many Australian's regard Ned Kelly and the sheep thief The Jolly Swagman as national treasures and icons f homage to our convict past. Chopper happens to be living version of that. And it's just my opinion after all - it's not true for all Australians. And when it comes to cops and robbers movies, I cheer for the robbers. Better senses of humour ;)
thank you. it's not every day that i find an interview subject who is like a character from a movie. when i read the first book i thought 'if speak like this with a camera in his face, i've got a great story that the average australian will identify with - in a positive or negative way. i laugh at people who chastise the media for doing stories on bad guys as if we are promoting them. go watch a james bond movie without the bad guy and tell me how interesting that is. life is colourful.
I think he was probably bipolar to be honest. Almost certainly. I counsel several people with the condition and they have remarkably similar personality traits - the over-the-top, dramatic, almost theatrical tone of the voice and personality is very typical. They’re constantly putting on a show - because they’re trying to hide how they’re actually feeling. Of course Chopper is an extreme case. Most bipolar people just get very depressed when something bad/stressful happens to them, whereas his outlet was obviously violence.
From the bottom of my heart I fell in love with him after seeing this interview with me chop chop. best Aussie Eva, best Movie Eva, & best survivalist Eva........Rest in peace you beautiful soul. I Neva new you but I love you
This has been answered - ad nauseum - in comments here and in articles and TV segs and last year in a news.com.au seg when I sold sold all the handwritten letters to a fan - but here we go again: my brother gave me a book written by a little known Melbourne crim and said -between the lines, he's telling a few truths about how things work between the cops and crims. So I found out Chopper was out of jail in a rare bout of freedom and I took a crew to Tassie for a bit of a chat and shoot some frames. He had lots of guns with him. I didn't ring ahead and say 'by the way - are you all tooled up for the show?' I saw the shotgun on the rear dash of the car, the 1938 Beretta pistol on the front dash and there were other guns I can't recall. Before Louis Theroux, I was putting myself in out-of-my-depth situations and writing about them. What would you have done? Cancelled the interview? Folded your arms and stormed back to the plane in a huff? Or got on with the job? I chose to get on with the job.
having just re-watched the final 60 minutes interview, and having just seen this interview after watching the first part Underbelly Chopper series, it dawns on me that you Renee Brack, would have been the perfect person to do the last interview with, a perfect last reunion so to speak, would have been awesome and imo, much preferred to the Tara Brown interview.
I personally think he 'knew', within a reasonable doubt, that the round was resting in the bottom of the revolver. Crazy as he is, I'm not fully convinced that he'd be willing to risk committing murder on live camera, but then again, he is insane. For the record, I'm in no way trying to underplay how dangerous the situation was, and I could be very wrong. Either way, bravo maintaining composure.
it was a fitting final public comment with a couple of digs, a bit of confessing - everything that anyone would expect. the really interesting final words from Chopper would be on his deathbed.
I have interview footage and recordings of phone calls, hand written letters from jail etc tucked away in a file from 1992. Maybe one day I'll pull them out for a look back in time.
Eric got a lot right - he has been accused of being a good mimic but that underplays his true acting ability. See him in Munich and you know Eric is an actor - not just a mimic.
Answers to every single question people ask are answered multiple times here, in TV segs, articles written etc etc. You are welcome to go looking for them by asking Uncle Google.
Thanks for posting. Reading the book by Adam Shand - he mentions this interview and the fact that his 'young assistant' had to have s sliver of glass removed from his neck.after the crack shot had a go. Better you than me to be there that day with not Mickey Mouse.
Thank you Renee, for speaking out as someone who actually spent time with the guy and researched him. I am so sad he has died, and am really pissed off at these bloody idiots on the net commenting negatively on articles about his death. Stupid bloody snobby dickheads who know absolutely nothing about the man. Makes me so mad. R.I.P. Chop Chop.
yes there has been some trolling by one person in particular who has a bad lo res quality of the interview seg and wanted to be thanked for infringing copyright and getting 100k+ views. i blocked him.
Chopper's stories weren't all fiction as commented here - he heard stories in jail which he then told as his own. This annoyed some crims and made others happy because it deflected attention away from them. Sure Chopper has a gift for fiction - but some of his stories are fact. And some are stories that starred him in his versions of them.
***** there could be some kicking around. the camera tapes went back to the EP years ago. i'd have to dig it out. and i mean dig - my work from the 90s could be anywhere...
I left crime reporting to report on another kind of international crime - filmmaking. Now I'm doing a few different things - one is Pet Antics - it's on Facebook and I write about pets. It's a nice change! But I still love interviewing and finding unusual characters to explore. So I might return to it if the right offer comes along :)
Damn, Renee, you're pretty good! He did so much stupid and dangerous stuff in front of you, and you remained professional and unbiased. This is the kind of educational reporting I like to see.
haha - thanks for thinking I've got guts Hamish but it happened fast. it's a strange feeling having a gun in your face and hear the trigger pulled. what does a civilian do? stand there surprised? i think that's what i did :)

"I thought that cutting people's toes off with a bolt cutter was rather poofy" - Mark "Chopper" Read, ladies and gentlemen. 3:43
Renee Brack, you are one brave woman.
Ever thought of getting a job! Absolute classic!!!
Thanks for posting. Reading the book by Adam Shand - he mentions this interview and the fact that his 'young assistant' had to have s sliver of glass removed from his neck.after the crack shot had a go. Better you than me to be there that day with not Mickey Mouse.
I don't think I'd film round him without an armed guard.
Dat laugh, it gave me chills.
"you dont have ears like mikey mouse, thats for sure" hahahahahaha, shes boss
Trent went on to become an Emergency Physician
Holy crap that must have been really terrifying! Somehow I feel like Chopper really liked you though. Go figure.
Eric banna smashes this roll
If he seriously had a bullet in that gun at the end, then he seriously is the most dangerous man alive ! That was just...well....attempted murder !
Chooper is the man, great interview saw this on news.com.au and you tubed it and here i am to see it in full.
Nice interview with one of the most interesting human beings to have lived. Full marks.

She's beautiful rip chopper lengendy guy England 🇬🇧
Holy crap! So glad you made it out of there.
R.I.P. Chop Chop.
hahahaha what a show pony everything he says he says for a reason he knows he is going to be on tv. what a legend and great personalitiy
yes there has been some trolling by one person in particular who has a bad lo res quality of the interview seg and wanted to be thanked for infringing copyright and getting 100k+ views. i blocked him.
You got some "balls" lady. Seriously. Brilliant interview. Love it. All the best to you.
Correct, how do you tell a lie, easy you just it with some truth, watch any news piece or politician speak!
Your composure when he does that is the best part. Amazing.
you're a very brave woman!
Just watched Chopper the other day for the first time. What a coincidence that this pops up on Reddit.
Hi Renee, I remember watch that story and thinking hope brave you were! That must have taken 20 years off your life?
thanks renee been looking for this for years :)
my pleasure. i found lots of stuff in my original files. it's for people like you - the fans - that I posted it up on youtube :)
‘Nothing wrong with me’ hahah brilliant
Renee I’m still watching 2018
great work Renee Brack.....preserved for all posterity
Damn, Renee, you're pretty good! He did so much stupid and dangerous stuff in front of you, and you remained professional and unbiased. This is the kind of educational reporting I like to see.
this woman is one hell of a journalist.
haha - thanks for thinking I've got guts Hamish but it happened fast. it's a strange feeling having a gun in your face and hear the trigger pulled. what does a civilian do? stand there surprised? i think that's what i did :)
you are a legend renee please upload more
im honestly speechless...haha wtf!! the man was mental!
Bloody brilliant interview.Great how Chopper laughs at his own jokes.
