- I'm making cookies!! Well, I made these before I filmed the video but you get the point. This is going to show you how I decorate my cookies for Halloween. I am by no means a professional at this but I do love decorating them.
See how to make JUST the cookies here: • Basic Sugar Cookie Rec...
Find my cookie recipe here: monicadoes.com/...
Royal Icing Recipe:
4 cups of Icing Sugar (powdered sugar)
5-7 tablespoons of warm water
3 tablespoons of meringue powder
Mix all of the ingredients with a stand or handheld mixer. The stand mixer will mix faster. You will most likely be mixing for about 5-12 minutes. At first, it might look too dry or too wet. No worries. Just mix. You are aiming for stiff peaks. Once you get to this consistency you can add more water to get your icing ready for piping, flooding, and so on. Watch the video for a little bit of information on that.

Monica
Wow, where have you been all my Life! I'm a beginner, needed some basic tips, didn't know why i was struggling. Now i know to mix the icing until there are stiff peaks, thank you for that! I have watched this over and over, still learning something new each time -thank you!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad!
I love this! A quick trick to use less food colouring for black is that colour develops and deepens over time so if you leave the black to set about a day, it'll actually turn darker. I usually make my black icing a day or two before I plan to decorate (it's a darker grey colour right after I mix it) because it really darkens to a nice deep black then and I don't use anywhere close to as much food colouring!
Cling wrap idea for icing, GENIUS! THANK YOU
Press n seal works the best but I can't find it anywhere anymore. So sad.
Thanks for being real (and by that, I mean "not afraid of imperfections!) It made me feel like I could actually do this!
+Ursula Salas Thank you for noticing! That's my total point in posting these. There are some amazing cookie artists here, but sometimes it can be so discouraging to attempt what they do. These are cookies that ANYBODY can do. ;)
Monica Talks well you win my subscription!
I’m gland this came up on my feed. Exactly what I’m looking for.
Your'e a really good teacher, Monica. I've never decorated cookies, but I feel like an expert already.
Awwww...thank you so much!!
I very seldom have the patience to watch a video all the way through, but you are so sweet, good at what you do, nice voice, I watched your video all the way to the end! I'm going to try this!
Love the idea of putting the icing in press and seal before putting it in the piping bag! Genius!
+Heather Phillips Me too!! I didn't originate it but I sure can't remember where I saw it. It just makes things so much easier!
Very cute and since I’m a beginner, you have given lots of great tips!
Sarah Lusmann thank you!!
your voice is so soothing and these cookies look so cute!!
+nowayyeswayful Awe thanks!
This is the greatest cookie decorating tutorial I have seen so far. All the others are very technical! This is great and so creative. Thank you!!
Heather Sargent awww...that’s the sweetest thing ever. Thank you so much. Maybe I need to start doing more again. 😊
Monica Does please!! Do a Christmas one!! I would LOVE that. If you don’t already have one, I just stumbled on your channel last night.
I just found it lol you’re so good!!
Heather Sargent you are so nice. Glad you found it. 😊
Serisouly, this was the best cookie decorating video ever. Cookie decorating is really intimidating to me, so I appreciate how you made it seem doable.
Amanda Meyer thank you so much. I’m so glad. I’m working on more so look out for those. Super simple ones. 😊
You explained everything so we'll. I'm not scared to try some halloween decorating. Thank you 😊
Isabel Ventura thank you!!
This video makes me not need anymore cookie decorating videos, wow !
:)
GREAT VIDEO MONICA!!! 10/10!!! I LOVE YOUR COOKIES MONICA! SO GREAT!!!
I'm in love w your press and seal idea!!
+Mariel Button It's such a life saver!
It really is! I always just used regular wrap and it always crusted a little. I never thought to use press and seal. And never though to press it directly against it! This will save me so much hassle!
Can't wait to decorate my cookies. Your instruction is spot on for novices. Thank you for that.
I love the fact you used your skin as contrast for the royal icing.
wilton black gel works great. just let it sit over night to develop ♡ helps w bleeding..
I loved your video. Everything was simple and easy to understand. I have made sooooo many iced holiday cookies over the years but they never look like the pictures on the recipes. Now I know how to do the "3D" effects like the lines on the pumpkins. Thanks for a great video. I will be watching for more.
I've always been taught to mix my meringue powder and water (and cream of tartar) first until it gets foamy THEN add the powdered sugar and flavoring. Just might make it easier next time. Also, using a spray bottle of water for adjusting the icing consistency. To get a good black, mix it a day before because it darkens. Another tip, add all leftover colors to the black and it'll darken. To get crisp edges on a cookie, like the bat, you should touch down the tip on every corner. Happy decorating!!
You are brilliant for the icing consistency! I'm still new at this and my two biggest frustrations are seeing the outline line and messing with flooding (it takes more bags and always ends up lighter than the outline!) You just solved both of those for me! Thank you so much!!
+Stephanie Jessie Thank you so much!! I use the same icing for flooding and outlining. If I want the outline thicker then I just split my batch and then add a little bit of water to the flooding batch. I add in teaspoons so that helps.
Such a great video, thank you so much! You saved me a fortune from not having to buy store bought cookies. Press and seal trick is brilliant :)
I’ve been waiting thank you looking for treats for halloween🧡 This will help us alot
you explained that so easily and made it so understandable. Thank you
Awsome tutorial. simple tools, simple steps. Beautiful results
You are so amazing at this! I am obsessed with these cookies!!! Too cute!
+Ashley S Thanks so much!! I'm exciting about this year's Halloween cookies. ;)
Our class just watched this video for a "Career Day" piece and they loved it! Thanks for sharing!
That's awesome!! I'm glad they loved it!
Super cute cookies! Love the icing in plastic wrap prior to going into the icing bag. Who knew?!?!? 🤷🏼♀️
Love your video, I especially love how helpful you are and how well you explain stuff. Thanks for the great video. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you.
My goodness you made this look super easy! Thank you
love the press n seal idea!
such a great video and your voice is so relaxing and calm.
+Diana Ruvalcaba Thanks so much!! I'm working on one for this year so look out for it soon.
Thanks for the tips. I’m going to try and make some for my daughters birthday!
I will be using your video and recipe to make my first Halloween Cookies! Love your video, tips and your way of explaining it, thank you :)!
That looks so easy!
It isn't really hard. It just takes some time. The most time intensive thing is creating all the colors. :)
Very nice video...you make it look so easy - your cookies look great!
Thank you! I just want people to know that these are totally doable. I have a new cookie video too so be sure to check that one out. ;)
Love love love this tutorial! Very good information and you’re so great at explaining the process! I’ve watched 100 other videos, yours is by far my favorite! SUBSCRIBED! 🙂
MrsLoveMuffin so glad you like it!
This was a great video!! My mom and I are tackling day of the dead cookies 😬 this video helped us a lot with the consistency of the Royal Icing! Thank you!
Love the press & seal idea. I usually have a big mess, I'm new at this and looking fwd to trying that thanks!
Thanks for the tips very helpful. Re. The piping bags
Thank you for this awesome video! When you ice cookies in sections like the pumpkins in your video, how long do you wait for the first section to dry? Also how long should I leave the cookies out to dry completely once I’m done decorating them? How to I prevent them from becoming stale and what’s the best way to package them if you’re bringing them to a party? Sorry for all of the questions! I am new to baking. Your videos are extremely helpful!!!😁
T-n-T Korpi just a few minutes. They crust over pretty quickly. I usually just do that section on all the cookies then immediately start on the next section.
So cute!!!
Thank you!!
Love your laugh! Thanks for the video
Thank you!!
Love these I can't wait to try the marbling technique!
These are adorable ! Thanks for posting
So inspiring. great video!!!!
This is very easy to follow tutorial, from an absolute beginner’s perspective and she has taught from scratch.
I have a question, currently my mixer is broken, can I mix the icing with a wooden spoon?
Thank you for your comment. You can make the icing with a whisk but it's a lot of work. This is how it was done in years gone by...lol. I wooden spoon wouldn't really work because you need the air but a whisk will definitely work. With hard work and patience, you can do it!
Absolutely love and and will definitely be making these for Halloween
Wow!!! I really enjoyed your video!!!
Beautiful cookies!
Stacy Greene thank you!!
Thank you Monica!! Well done!! You've inspired me to give it a try.
Awesome video!! You taught everything so well with a great narrative!! Thank you also for all your tips! Especially with the colors!! 💖🌟☀️✨
Alyena’s Kitchen thanks so much!!!
So sweet!
thank you I love baking but sometimes I feel like I can't do it but with your videos you made it seem easy I'll defiantly try to do them🎃🎃
+Daisy Perez You can totally do these! Let me know when you do. ;)
Love this video so informative 👏. I knew most of every, but i did realize that I have been puting on the coupler wrong like my whole life. Lol!! I would always but the tip and coupler in the bag. It just seems silly now. Hahaha. TFS!!
That sounds like something I’d do. 😆 When it’s on properly, you can easily change the tip.
Happy haloween 2020 🎃
Your decorations are beautiful
This is amazing!
Maribel Sopita glad you like it! 😊
thank you!! I will be trying this for my son's halloween party. thanks!
Great job
Super cute! I love these and your video:)
really nice decoration !!!!
You deserve more subscribers that's y I just subbed
Awe thanks!!
She SURE does deserve MORE subscribers!!!😍😍😍
Amazing video! So simple I understand it so well thank you
Very creative 👍🏻👍🏻
Adding some jet black cocoa powder should help you get a deep black icing color without using so much food coloring.
loved this video. i have the same kit, but I didnt know how to decorate some of them (to be honest, i was not sure what some were). Can you do another video on some of the other popular wilton cutter shapes?
Bikini Sarah that’s a great idea!! You got it!
Love this video! I will definately try this! :)
sabrina nash Awesome! I’m so glad you like it!
Thank you forntaking the time to make this video. Question though, how long does it take the frosting to dry?
Sammy94628 it takes overnight to dry completely unless you’re using a fan. If you’re just waiting to do the next color, it takes 10-20 minutes to dry on the surface.
Loved this video, you are very creative (especially with the reusable bags option and mixing in the brown with orange - I would not have thought about that!). Feeling Inspired to get stuck in this Halloween!! Thank you xx
Anna V thank you!!
Excellent real-life video! Well done! Also....I bought the same cookie cutters and almost returned them because the shaped didn’t look that great out of the package but once I saw yours all cut/baked they looked great! Thanks again!
HockeyXMom so glad! I love when I can see real life stuff. 😊
So cute! Thank you!
So I am a total newbie, so thank you for describing all the things you use! Also do you have any recommendations for the sugar cookie recipe? Thank you!!!
+Anne Lightner Hi!! I'll post my go to recipe on my blog this week. It's basically a mix of several different recipes I've tried. ;)
Thank you! :-)
new subscriber here. I love your video. thanks so much!
So informative! Thanks for the tips!!
Just find your video and it was extremely helpful. I learned so much that I was not doing with using the bags for filling the icing. Your cookies are so perfect..how did you do those. Is there a video for your cookies..
Really great video! 💗💗
Lori F thank you so much!!
This looks amazing. You are so talented!! p.s: thank you so much for subscribing to my channel ❤️❤️❤️
hollyween cookies is my favorite
I love your video. ....can I have your cookie recipe. ....awesome job!
Thank you! Sure! My recipe is on my blog. www.monicadoes.com
I love your video.
Hello Monica. What is the best way to store the icing? and for how long? Thank you so much.
woow good luck i really love them keep it up 😊😊😊😊👍👍👏👏
This is awesome! im bringing cookies to a potluck next weekend and ill be using these techniques. How long does the icing take to harden between layers?
For layers, you can build within a few minutes. For the final product, let it dry overnight. It will be dry to the touch within a few minutes but is still wet and soft in the middle.
Monica Does Thanks!
Hi and thanks for the video. How long does the outline take to dry? I love that video. You make it look so easy.
Maris Rios not long at all. Well, not long to move on to more decorating. To completely dry for travel takes a bit longer.
Does using such a large amount of gel color change the taste of the royal icing?
Just Desserts by Dena nope.
Awesome :) thanks for the tips.
why do you prefer one meringue powder instead of the other? is ther a difference in taste?
Really it's just about what I have on hand at the time. Each powder works differently. The amount of water you add varies per brand so once you have a brand you like you'll tend to stick to it. The taste varies slightly but isn't a big deal at all. Royal icing doesn't have much of a taste to me at all. It's just sweet. ;)
Yum😋
sorry if this is a silly question, but i that just water you added to the icing? and how much did you add? great video!! 🖤
Not silly. It’s warm water. I start with 5 tablespoons and add more little by little if needed. A little goes a long way so don’t add more than a tablespoon at a time. In fact, try half of the tablespoon or even a teaspoon. The total amount added will vary for everyone. It even varies per batch.
thank you! another question, does this icing dry hard or does it have a lil softness when you bite into cookie.
+Stacy Chavez The icing isn't rock hard unless you let the cookies sit out for days and the cookies get hard. The icing is edible and doesn't break your teeth or anything. It's almost like a candy. I've never had anyone ask that before but this is a good question. I'll try to remember to break a cookie in an upcoming video to give others an idea of what it's like.
Very helpful, thank you very much!
Can I use a handheld Kitchen aid? All the videos i see are using this one ):
Marissa Lugo you can but you just have to hold it for a while. It can take quite a while for the meringue powder to form into peaks for the royal icing. Just be prepared for your arms to tire but you should definitely go for it. 😊
Monica Does I tried this and omg i’m definitely investing in a standing mixer LOL
Marissa Lugo it makes a huge difference. You can walk away and clean up or do whatever...lol
I love your KitchenAid. I have the OG one and man is it noises these days! 🙈😂
hello, what does the meringue powder do for the icing??
+Stacy Chavez Hi! The meringue powder pretty much makes the icing. Traditional royal icing is made very much like a meringue is made...with egg whites and sugar. Meringues and royal icing are very finicky so I find it to be much easier to use the meringue powder instead.
Monica!! Hopefully you remember me from before lol ever since I watched this video for the first time awhile ago you helped me teach myself how to decorate sugar cookies and get into so much more! Just wanted to thank you for all the help and lovely videos you have posted! My fiancé and I have recently created an instagram named cookies_batch with all the sweets we've made! I'd love it if you could check it out ! Thanks again for all the help -Mimi
Awesome!! I'll for sure check it out!
Adorable :3
Very nice :)
what is meringue powder?
Meringue powder is just dried and pasteurized egg whites (and sugar). Traditional royal icing calls for egg whites and is made much like a meringue. The powder is used so that the regular egg whites don't have to be. It's the crucial ingredient in royal icing and gives it its texture. Without it, your icing would basically be a glaze. You can find it in craft stores or online. Sometimes grocery stores have it in the icing section.
thank you :) I'll have a look for it

How much do you sale you cookies for? Do you sale them in your city?
Jukey Lenore Tv thanks for the request but I don’t sell them. I do this completely for fun. I appreciate your confidence in my work though. 😊
Monica Does oh ok. These seem very professional.
