The only reason Dark Dawn made Golden Sun dormant was cause of its AWFUL release date and the fact that it had ZERO marketing. The game came out only 2 and a half months before the 3DS. Golden Sun deserves another chance
kind of late here but thats not the only reason, the forced using of the touch controls was kind of a giant middle finger to older players who didnt like that feature on the DS due to its issues with working at times. this lead to people disliking the game which in turn made the game less popular through word of mouth.

in the case of nintendo, this company is trapped between doing its old IPs, or doing new ones. at this moment, I think nintendo has at least 25 ips? Thats a lot, And I'm pretty sure that's why some of them just dont come back for more than 10 years. We may have the same problem with square / enix, all the other companies don't have this problem thought, so I really dont know.

The Chrono series? What else is to tell? There is no more story. Just imagine such mounstruosity to have a complete remake with the Unreal Engine...It will sell, but to develop?
Reaching too high from the start. A bit like Golden Sun 2. Where do you go from there? You can't beat Chrono Trigger in a Chrono-type game, and you sure as hell can't make a GS as good as GS2 was.
Chrono Cross... way different game. Was a lot of fun but didn't have the charm as Trigger for me, a lot of my more casual gamer friends didn't finish it because they didn't like it but they loved Chrono Trigger.
Funny enough, Shadow hearts from the new world is my favorite in the series since it's so light-hearted compared to the other 2, and i liked Franky even if he was braindead, and the final boss with that OST and Lady screaming was just beautiful. Covenant had an amazing story but i never feel the need to play the game again since i had completed 100%, but i completed FTNW multiple times because i was really enjoying it. It does have some improvements in gameplay compared to Covernant and much better graphics / animations, and the boss battle (Le Gran Luxe) was my favorite in the series.
To be fair, much of this franchises were never THAT popular to begin with. And some of them were already long dead when games from this list were released (like Vandal Hearts, Lunar and Breath of Fire)
@@ReaveIdono True. But that was more than 15 years ago. Breath of Fire 6 was released in 2016 only in Japan and i personnaly didnt even know or care about it really by then.
The problem with Dark Dawn was it came at the end of the DS era. it was pretty much sent out to die as opposed to holding off for the 3DS (which to be fair I can't 100% blame) while it had a legend to follow up, and did a damn good job for itself, it did things that Golden sun avoided actively. Points of no return where you can't go back in a game where you have to hunt for something to make yourself stronger is a TERRIBLE choice. otherwise, it's not a bad game. it's a good one, and it's a shame really
There was a game I watched a friend of mine play briefly back when I was 9 or 10. I couldn't for the life of me recall what the game was called. 20 years later that game still pops up in my memory from time to time, and only now do I finally have a name for that game - Alundra 2! The visuals of the game in this video ticked something in the back of my head, and reading the plot on Wikipedia, I can confirm it's the one based solely on the magical wind-up keys element. The scene of that giant key falling onto a whale and changing it is what I still remember all these years later. Thank you for finally helping me put to rest a question I've had for two decades.
I feel like Lufia: Ruins of Lore was the true killer of the franchise. Even though it wasn't the last game to come out, it came out years before Curse of the Sinistrals with generic combat and a disconnected story with bland characters. Every RPG player I knew despised the game. Great video!
I bought that game! And yes, it was very disappointing. Other than being set in the same world, it was like, bland. I don't even recall if there was Sinistrals in it, that's how boring it was.
Legaia 2 is terrible by comparison. The third character you get is literally unusable in battle for three whole areas and the difficulty spikes are ridiculous!
I only played the second one I liked it a lot a specially the battle system, plus a funny story with a light-heartedness too it that made it a good relaxing playthrough
Played it. Liked it because of Legaia 1 nostalgia mostly. If you're a true legaia fan you will be ok with it. Still a total disappointment though. The switch to not having loads of monsters (seru) to absorb as summons for magic was a total let down. Retreading the craptastic sewers was also a giant piece of dung.
Game Arts may not have been involved in Lunar on the DS but Japan Arts Media was who was also heavily involved in the previous entries. A lot of Lunar’s charm came from working designs and from the presentation which DS lacked. Having animated cutscenes would have gone a long way. Also the abomination of a battle system didn’t help either. So I can’t select my enemies and I have to scream into the mic to escape. What the hell man...
For Lufia II, making it into an action RPG wasn't even the worse. Completely changing the story was kinda pointless, since it kinda defeat the purpose of a remake, but sure, why not. It's not starting well, though... But replacing the amazing puzzles of the original by stupid, mindless QTE? Now that's really the final nail on the coffin. It's really a perfect example of how to not make a remake.
I felt it more like a reboot of sorts, sure, I enjoyed it to be honest, but... Clearely it lost the charm of the original game and cannot be considered a remake with those changes (the puzzles being changed was a big not OK, as the rest was "well, not what I expect but... is tolerable"). But speaking of story changes, the New Game + ending was unexpected for me (and also more like a what if of sorts).
What about Grandia 3? I know the creator's death kinda affected the series but Grandia 3 was kinda the last attempt to keep the series relevant but it ended up being the last game in the series.
I love Golden Sun, but DD didn’t do the franchise any favors. For me, it’s main problem is that it is a way too easy. I never once died while playing the game. I beat every boss on the first try, including secret bosses.
Same, I beat Dullahan on my first try too. I tried playing it a 2nd time a hacked rom just to reduce the EXP gain to half, and I still didn't die a single time! Except against the final boss, had to level up a bit.
@@darkfyraproductions7958 FF Dim was decent. I have a few ports like FFT and Secret of Mana too but I feel like I'd be better off just getting an snes emulator
I'd like to see a video opposite this one; RPG's that revived dying or previously-dead franchises; if there are any RPG's in that category. I don't think I'd include RPG sequels that pushed their whole series into more mainstream status like Persona 3-5, though; unless they still revived a dying or dead franchise.
Fire Emblem awakening is one. The franchise was on life support, so they added a ton of features that they always wanted to with the expectation that it would be the last game. Insteas it blew up, and become one of Nintendo's most pushed franchises.
lunar dragon song, why is it people mention that you lose hp from sprinting and only in the speedrun that people mention that running away from battle required blowing into the microphone that is the funniest mechanic ever!
Alundra II was amazing, should have gotten a different name.. same for Breath of Fire: dragon quarter. Both amazing games. But wrong name. White knight chronicles was amazing, my favorite game. Sadly they wanted to make it into an MMORPG and keeping online servers open was way to expensive for them. That's why they had to close of the multiplayer, that's what killed it IMO. Still worth playing for the story.. Still waiting for a dark cloud III.
Yeah, I liked WKC, the ending was kind of a WTF?! moment, but the rest was decent. I heard the post-credit To Be Continued was supposed to be a story DLC on your character, sadly it never got released :(
Agreed on the Shadow Hearts series. The first two were really good (second one was the best imo) but the 3rd one didn't really do the series justice. It's a good game on its own but it doesn't feel like it fits into the series. Also, imo I thought Koudelka was pretty good too. It is a short game and the battle system is slow but if you give it a chance, it is good and the soundtrack is great too.
I think the fact that they removed Yuri as the main character was the reason it failed, that guy was a badass and had an interesting though cliche backstory, not to mention his ability was amazing!!! This is what the protagonist should be like, a special fit for every tactic you can think off!
I absolutely loved SH1 and SH2, I fell deeply in love with Yuri's lore and Alice. And suddenly, we're transported to New York to follow a Tidus looking mother fucker trying to solve petty crimes. Don't get me wrong, the game's still really fun, but I just want that gothic atmosphere back. Remember in SH1 when Yuri+Alice were trapped in a cannibal ghost village, that was spooky
@@haseoxv9508 This is probably really late, but I thought Johnny was fine for a protagonist. I always thought he was meant to be the straight man, reacting to all the really crazy shit that goes on throughout the game. Heck they even worked it into the gameplay a bit since Johnny has the absolutely lowest sanity, with only Ricardo being about as low or lower, which makes sense.
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn main problem was that it should have spent more years in dormancy to wait for the release of Nintendo 3DS. The DS essentially limited the game's potential. The graphics were amazing, and possibly the best in that console, the music is amazing, the plot was thick and interesting too
As a kid, the plot twist to the first Vandal Hearts game totally blew my mind. The moment I finished it, I went back through it all over again. The second one is really good too - once you get a feel for how the AI is going to act each turn, it almost becomes too easy. Flames of Judgement, though, was slow and tedious, and took too long to establish it's characters (such as they were) meaning most people didn't feel inclined to perservere with it.
Honestly, I still don't get the hate behind Action Jrpgs, it's not like there's no strategy involved in them. You ever tried button mashing in Monster Hunter?
Most JRPG fans love both turn-based and action JRPGs but when a turn-based franchise that people have grown to love switch into action it rubs them the wrong way

Currently doing a playthrough of Alundra 2 and your comment is spot on. Like it should have been named something else and it would probably do well. But since it was connected to Alundra, people already had that expectation. :(
Yeah, a lot of stuff went wrong with Dragon Quarter (5), but the main feature of the series (transform in a Dragon) was more like a punishment mechanic than a good power up, having to think (literally) EVERY SINGLE MOVE during battles AND outside of the battles was bad already, and EVEN MORE the limited saves (what was Capcom thinking about that aspect of the game... on Resident Evil 1-3 or whar?! (just to name some examples of Capcom games with limited saves back then)).
I really liked to see a fourth Shadow Hearts because its gameplay was special with the Judgement Ring. I played the third game first and it was fun. I also own the second game and Koudelka but only a copied disc of the first game I got from a former classmate. I liked their story as well so I won't say the third wasn't as good. On the contrary the third game had the best soundtrack. I always get chills when I listen to Lady Tears (the final boss music)
What? I found the music of the 3rd to be really lacking by comparison. Lady Tears is great, but I prefer both 3 Karma and Battle with Astaroth from the 2nd game. Overall, battle themes is a strong point of the 3rd, but I still think the first two games are comparable or better in this regard. On top of that, the 1st game have so many great edgy and mysterious songs. Psycho Temple, Castle of Silence, Coffin Fetish, Ripper Ripper, Wind Which Blows from the Dark, Angel Heart, Bloody Kitchens, Much Hatred Still Rankles. The 2nd game is a bit weaker in this regard, but still solid, and it makes up for it by having a better depth of great emotional/sad songs, like Faith or Fate, The Fate, Kallen (Karin's theme). Both games also have top tier town and overworld themes. The 3rd game for me really lacks stand out songs. The mysterious songs took an even bigger step back in terms of amount and quality, and the emotional songs are not up to par with the 2nd game. The town themes are forgettable. Will, Fragmentation and Living Sacrifice are some of the few that stands out to me.
Mobile games are where franchises go to die. It’s a shame that the creator of final fantasy is creating mobile games with mistwalker studio instead of creating full length console/pc rpgs
well informed and passionate take. Its sad that people just give up on a franchise rather than just take the message and go back to what worked the first time. some of them aren't even TRYING.
I actually loved the "weird-ass experiment" that is BOF 5. The ideas behind it could have been so much more interesting if they could be developed better. 6 on the other hand, was a catastrophe.
Legaia 2 was one of the first JRPGs I played to completion. It and Final Fantasy X were the reasons I begged my dad to buy me a PS2. I remember pouring hundreds of hours into it and talking about the game with my cousins on the weekend all the time. Legaia 2 holds a special place in my heart for that alone. So to find out no one in the classic JRPG circle really liked nor cared about the game was shocking to say the least.
More changing from monster collector to not? correct me if I'm wrong because I didn't play it; but the removal of the genre of the first game of collecting/battling monsters killed my interest in the second. Worse I recall the developer/s saying they chose to make that change because the game was successful in the west. >.> This is what we call backward logic.
@@astralwyrm3787 Not sure what you mean, but I think we are not in the same channel, I meant the change from the original DS game (which never came to the west, mind you), and was a traditional JRPG in contrast to the PS3 version, which is a semi action RPG. But in regards to what you said, I was kind of disappointed they removed the familiar system, the PS3 game has a system with a lot of potential, but also needed lots of polishing, and in the second Ni no Kuni rather than working in the flaws of the system, they decided to give up and came up with something more similar to Kingdom Hearts (a pure action RPG). it's not bad I tell you, it's very fluid and polished, but it lacks the charming uniqueness of the first one, and adding the mediocre over the top corny plot the second has in contrast to the moving and personal plot of the first one it's just insult to injury, I think the actual reason they removed the familiar system from Ni no Kuni it's because Level5 already had Yokai Watch and wanted to center their efforts of monster battling system there. Anyways, Ni no Kuni 2 it's not a bad game, it's plot is really what drags it down.
Shadow Heart FTNW is a spin-off that isn't part of the main story - it was meant to just fill time before the actual Shadow Hearts 3 which would follow Yuri's father's battle before the first game and was in development but cancelled when Nautilus' parent company was bought out and they were dissolved, and all development was focused on Pachinko machines. There were even pachinko machines with new stories, so FTNW isn't even technically the last Shadow Hearts game made.

It's sad to see game series destroying a game franchise. Sometimes some games series, do end up becoming alittle stale. So ending a franchise is the sensible thing to do. Trying something new can often alienate some fans of a series. It's difficult for development teams at times, they're damned if they do or damned if they don't try to implement some changes.
I remember White Knight Chronicles (WKC), when it originally came out it had an online MMO/style portion where you could do quests using the character you made in the main game. You could build property, carry over some items from the MMO portion into the single player game & so on. That was one of the first things to go, which is a pity it had some pretty decent ideas. At least we got WKC2 which finished the story. The game also had a pretty good sense of scale, before I got my hands on Monster Hunter World, WKC was where big baddies felt BIG.

Do it! 2 has aged better and has some really fun town building elements. That's my recommendation.

I really wish they would make a Golden Sun 4. Although I did have some complaints about 3, mostly about all the points of no return I still would gladly play another Golden Sun game. D:
It is a shame companies will often just decide a series is dead and no one wants it anymore if a title flops instead trying to figure out why fans didn't didn't like a particular entry. D:
in the case of nintendo, this company is trapped between doing its old IPs, or doing new ones. at this moment, I think nintendo has at least 25 ips?
Thats a lot, And I'm pretty sure that's why some of them just dont come back for more than 10 years. We may have the same problem with square / enix, all the other companies don't have this problem thought, so I really dont know.

What killed the Chrono series?
nothing, unless chrono cross was not a sufficient success.
The Chrono series? What else is to tell? There is no more story. Just imagine such mounstruosity to have a complete remake with the Unreal Engine...It will sell, but to develop?
Reaching too high from the start.
A bit like Golden Sun 2. Where do you go from there? You can't beat Chrono Trigger in a Chrono-type game, and you sure as hell can't make a GS as good as GS2 was.
the bar
they set it too high themselves

Real OG mentioning Vandal hearts. Such a great and epic game. Never got past 20 minutes of Vandal Hearts 2 tho.
About Vandal heart Judgment this game wasnt even finished it had an ending but well no comments
The problem with Dark Dawn was it came at the end of the DS era. it was pretty much sent out to die as opposed to holding off for the 3DS (which to be fair I can't 100% blame)
while it had a legend to follow up, and did a damn good job for itself, it did things that Golden sun avoided actively. Points of no return where you can't go back in a game where you have to hunt for something to make yourself stronger is a TERRIBLE choice. otherwise, it's not a bad game. it's a good one, and it's a shame really
please never call that last game on the list Breath of Fire ever again
I never played legaia 2, legaia 1 was an amazing game and my very first rpg game.
Legaia 2 is terrible by comparison. The third character you get is literally unusable in battle for three whole areas and the difficulty spikes are ridiculous!
I thought Legaia 2 was really good!!!
My favorite Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 music at the beginning!! Auto - thumbs up
Game Arts may not have been involved in Lunar on the DS but Japan Arts Media was who was also heavily involved in the previous entries. A lot of Lunar’s charm came from working designs and from the presentation which DS lacked. Having animated cutscenes would have gone a long way. Also the abomination of a battle system didn’t help either. So I can’t select my enemies and I have to scream into the mic to escape. What the hell man...
Grandia should on here somewhere, so sad that there's not much chance of another one
how about Wild ARMs ? XF is not a bad game IMHO, but they killed it anw lol
I'm playing it now, only a few levels in and I like the tactics gameplay more. Story is a lil slow at the moment
Grandia 3. Had the best battle system the story was forgettable tho
One day all of our favorite franchises will return...

Anyone here wants an HD Remaster of the Lunar games? (excluding Dragon Song)

Here's how I see it: Covenant > From The New World > Shadow Hearts
And we don't talk about Koudelka. That was an awful game.
White Knight Chronicles was awesome. Wish the geonet was up and this was playable on ps4.
I would say Johnny is freaking boring for MC like wow even more boring than Vaan lmao

Let's be honest BoF 5 killed the series. BoF 6 was just beating dead body with a stick.
@@PikangsFutaba Yeah my mind was blown when i've realised i just lost the game since i dared to transform 1 time too many.
Me too!! I kinda want to play right now.....but i dont have pc 😭
The loss of Shadow Hearts still bother me till this day😔 Hopefully they sell the IP and we can see the series revived
Would be awesome. Personally I'd be happy if they got ported to ps4/ps5. Wanna get them trophies hahaha

They should opensource failed franchises... let the hardcore fans recycle this... maybe something good will come of it.
They are too greedy to share without gain.
That thing abiout changing from traditional JRPG to action apply to Ni no Kuni? I'm not sure...

May i ask a small favor? Can you make a content solely describing great jrpg stories.
Great video man and a sad one as well since I liked some of the series here sad that they died ....
Also where are you living right now ?
I remember White Knight Chronicles (WKC), when it originally came out it had an online MMO/style portion where you could do quests using the character you made in the main game. You could build property, carry over some items from the MMO portion into the single player game & so on. That was one of the first things to go, which is a pity it had some pretty decent ideas. At least we got WKC2 which finished the story. The game also had a pretty good sense of scale, before I got my hands on Monster Hunter World, WKC was where big baddies felt BIG.
how to kill a franchise? turn it to an action rpg. i'm talking about you final fantasy.

Nah, Final Fantasy is still very popular despite what you say.

@@musiclover01ization Yes, it is still popular. It does help to have a three decade plus lifespan. From your statement you seem to say it is beyond criticism. Something popular doesn't make it great always. Branding does quite a bit for a franchise.
Ya know, Capcom can pull of remakes of the first 2 breath of fire games. I mean look what gamearts did with grandia, it could be done
stop lying would ya. Golden Sun is NOT a dead franchise. the main developer of the franchise stated that creating a new story for the game takes time and will indeed happen if there is enough demand for it. all we need to do is have a lot of PATIENCE. this was stated shortly after Isaac got revealed as assist trophy in Smash Bros Ultimate a mere 2 years ago. Conduct deeper research into the games you're presenting.

Wild Arms? I see that it did get a mobile game released in 2018 (A generic Gatcha game) , but I don't really feel that counts because it's not an original production. Not counting that the previous one was Wild Arms XF in 2007 (A PSP game) and the last home-console was a remaster of the original Wild Arms Alter-F for PS2
