There is an interesting analogy in Tamil literature. They teach poetry, literature first and then grammar. There is a saying in Tamil -- grammar was derived from how literature was written.

maybe using Sriram parasuram ji's notion of 'family and friends' instead of melakartha janaka/janyam is a better system

While they are not all-encompassing, Aroganam and Avaroganam set a basic theoretical 'rule' for a raga, helping a musician sing or play an instrument using the swara framework. Music that is notated with notes is helpful for a learner and to have as a record, although the finer gamakas, prayogams and other nuances that add aesthetics can only be learnt from a guru or by listening to good renditions. Even for advanced learners, they can help in practicing the raga for kalpanaswaram, starting at a basic level and adding other special uses as they progress. While many aspects of ragas have gained acceptance through the years, any uses that deviate such that the raga becomes not recognizable should be shunned. I am reminded of the scene from the movie "Sankarabharanam" where the teacher checks the student when she goes off note in a song, and these imposed rules will help to preserve the beauty and original structure of our raga traditions.
