I remember when we watched this movie in class a few years ago. It was pretty awkward, cause no one else seemed very amused, but during this scene I couldn't contain my laughter even if I tried. This was the case during a lot of scenes actually... Something about the humor in this movie just gets me.

It goes without saying that Chico and Harpo were comic geniuses, but Edgar Kennedy, caught in the middle here, was a brilliant comic in his own right, having worked with other comedians from Laurel and Hardy, to Lupe Velez, to W.C. Fields, to the Marx Brothers, to Buster Keaton, to Shemp Howard, to Fatty Arbuckle to Wheeler and Woolsey. Kennedy also had a very long running series of comedy shorts with himself in the starring role. Kennedy's so underrated and deserves to be better known by the general public.

@@infjgirl3850 Hey thanks for bringing up those parts I seem to have forgotten; just goes to show I ought to revisit the book, it's evidently been long enough that reading it again will be like a fresh experience. One thing I think I do recall is that Harpo seems to have thoroughly enjoyed Alexander Woollcott, a personality detested by many including Harold Ross, James Thurber and others; I think even Dorothy Parker eventually couldn't stand him. My impression is that Woollcott's insensitive pranks were among the reasons he was disliked but Harpo just regarded them as challenges to outprank the prankster. Another aspect people couldn't tolerate was Woollcott's arrogance and self-importance but I think Harpo was so unimpressed he wasn't even offended.

The Pop Bubble I grew up a Stooges fan but now I’m starting to understand and appreciate the Marx Brothers.

Great skit, but you left out the part where Harpo took off his shoes, rolled up his pant legs, and jumped into the lemonade cart and treaded.

That's from later in the movie.

The guy in the middle is Charles Bachman. If anyone remembers him, he played the Police Officer in the Little Rascals :)

Actually that's Edgar Kennedy, who was known at the time for his "slow burn".

FantasiusTriton1993 hmm. Are you sure? I could have sworn on IMDB that it was him.

obimokenobi FantasiusTriton1993 is right. He also appears later in the movie in the bathtub with Harpo.

obimokenobi It's definitely Edgar Kennedy. He did play the cop in both Little Rascals(Our Gang) and Laurel and Hardy comedies which were produced by Hal Roach. He nearly always played a cop. He's actually one of the original Keystone Kops. Charles A. Bachman also played a lot of cops in Roach movies and even kind of looked like Kennedy at times so I can see where you made the mistake.

My favourite is Groucho, but this is Chico and Harpo at their best.
Notice, the anarchy-the Hayes Act-stppoed a film like this ever to be made again.

You see?! Duck Soup is a masterpiece-on the level of Dr. Strangelove. And if you don't agree with me

Groucho may have been the best individual comedian of the bunch, but as a team, Harpo and Chico were always my favorites to watch.

This is a post-Code film and it's reasonably clean. There is the once scene where Harpo seems to have seduced a woman, but he actually up in bed with a horse so I guess that passed the censors!
