1996 I dressed up as Harpo for a Halloween party. I didn’t speak to anyone the whole night, did the leg trick , blew the horn. It was amazing how my friends and everyone at the party just got used to it as the night went on. My girlfriend at the time wasn’t thrilled.
I plan on getting it soon. I just ordered from Ebay Maxine Marx's book about her father, Chico. I also found at the Half Price bookstore "Why A Duck?" Harpo Speaks is next on my list. ETA: Nope, got "The Marx Bros. Scrapbook" first. Winner, winner!
I'm reading Harpo Speak now, and I am glad to see the "knives in the sleeve" routine in this collection. It's amazing that he was doing that routine in Moscow in 1933. What a chap, and what a life.
I wonder when these women auditioned for a part in a Marx Brothers movie, they were asked "How fast can you run in heels?" Margret Dumont was always perfect in her roles. Truly classic comedy
Harpo is my favorite comedian! He never fails to make me laugh. The day after my father died a friend sent me this clip and it made me laugh.. God bless Harpo
There has been actors portray Laurel and Hardy, the Three Stooges, and even Martin and Lewis, Abbott and Costello, among many many others. But they’ve never made a movie portraying the Marx Brothers. Why? In a word, IMPOSSIBLE!!!!
The hand slap, to apologetically kissing the hand, to trying to snap her forearm against his shin, & the demented rage-gookie afterwards are brilliant. And this scene was frequently brought to mind whenever I'd see one specific kid at the family reunions. It's less adorable when it's real. 😐
twicebitten thasme Oh, I dunno. It doesn’t take a lot of brains to laugh at Harpo. The tiniest kids can laugh at him. So I’d say anyone who doesn’t just has a stick up their butt!
I have started doing that leg routine on my wife. She falls for it usually if I catch off guard (she thinks I am handing her something) Has same response as the ladies in the film. So far, we are still married.
i did it to a friend of a friend when he went to shake my hand, and he was mortified, thought i was coming on to him, i had to explain from where it was from, which ruined the fun. I am going to try pranking someone really seriously business like in the future with it
There's a scene where two gangsters are playing cards. One shuffles the deck, plops it down on the table and says "cut the cards". Harpo pulls a hatchet out of his pocket and chops the deck in half. Cards fly everywhere! Hilarious!
Jonny O.P. Yeah, it was great! But seriously, you know what’s really asinine? Looking for comedy videos so you can toss soggy turds on everyone’s fun. This falls under the “if you don’t like this kind of video, why don’t you go find one you do?” argument.
A true “professor”! The Marx bothers at their best.....Chico & Harpo a double act alone....Groucho too even alone....but all three together are magical mayhem!!! :) :) :)
dont forget Margaret Dumont. She was Groucho's straight man and a critical part of the madness. She later said one thing that made them so funny was that she never really got the jokes so her look of perplexity was real. add in Zeppo as Jammison taking a letter to Hunadunna and it gets even better.
I was watching Duck Soup on Netflix earlier, and I found myself laughing my ass off... Why didn't anyone ever tell me about these awesome comedies from days forgotten?
I just watched the restored version of this scene on the blu-ray and it has a hilarious censored shot restored of Harpo pulling off Mrs. Whitehead’s blouse by his teeth.
I found myself absolutely in love with Arrabella's character (Played by Lilian Roth) who played the daughter of Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). She (Arrabella) even had a singing part, a duet with her boyfriend Johnny Parker. It went something like; 'Tell me, dear, why am I so romantic...When you're near, why am I so romantic? What a grand feeling, when your lips meet mine...That certain something comes reeling, up and down my spine.' Something like that. It was cute and the two of them looked cute together. This is my favorite Marx Brothers movie. My favorite part was when Harpo and Chico were trying to expose Rosco Chandler as Abe Kibibel. (He's A-be, the fish man, A-be, the fish man...) Groucho as Capt. Spalding, the hunter who returned from Africa, told some fanciful tales about shooting an elephant in his pajamas (How he got into my pajamas, I have no idea) And bagging (Bagging sounds like begging) six tigers to go away because they were the most persistent tigers he ever came across. While there they also took some pictures of the Native girls, but they weren't developed, but they're going back... [Mrs Rittenhouse interjects] Lovely speech, Captain, thank you. Rosco Chandler then shouts 'Three cheers for Captain Spalding' and Harpo returns with three chairs :P The humor in Marx Brother movies wasn't always obvious. Sometimes you had to think a while and be familiar with pop culture references that were relevant at the time and I admire all their movies specifically FOR that. If you watch their material enough, it's like all four and everyone with screen credit are still here. Time capsules...That's what they are. Thanks for reading =)
LMAO, this is hilarious! I'm playing Banjo in my college's production "The Man Who Came to Dinner", and my director said to study Harpo Marx to get an idea for the 'leg-in-hand' bit. Also, that silverware bit had me in tears! :')
Nice! If you're at all interested, I'd highly recommend his biography, "Harpo Speaks!". Some great stuff in there, including when he went to perform in Russia and was being grilled by the border guards who had become suspicious of him. When they searched his trunk, they removed "four hundred knives, two revolvers, three stilettos, half a dozen bottles marked POISON, and a collection of red wigs and false beards, mustaches and hands".
Harpo my boy i love him my favorite maybe cause i’m quiet and with my autism i feel like i can’t so i’m like him i try to show it or take it if i can i can speak but again
I can’t believe that someone put this together as the “best “of Harpo.. and every single one “cuts” the end (his punchline!)Someone should be ashamed of themselves!!!
I think it's chapter 15, the one where Wolcott buys the "clubhouse"on Neshobe Island and all the adventures they have there, I've re-read the chapter so many bloody times. I'm totally transported there and it seems so brilliant. By far one of the greatest chapters in any book I've ever written. The book itself is a masterpiece but I think we all know that goes without saying, haha!
And Chico is mine, but Harpo comes in second. My favorite I Love Lucy episode is when he and Lucy do the mirror routine when she and Ricky et al are in Hollywood. My first sight and knowledge of Harpo Marx.
I didn't know what to do for Halloween this year, so I thought and thought... And then I remembered: "YES, OF COURSE, MY OLD HARPO COSTUME!!" I'm gonna have so much fun this Halloween. :'D Still, I can't make a face like at 2:31. xD
I've realized that Harpo's leg trick, and some of his other mannerisms, are very puppy-like. Some dogs will put their paws up when they want attention and then rest one leg on the human's hand. I wonder if he was inspired by animals?
I'm not claiming I've seen their movies more times than anyone, but I do know their films very well. A few weeks ago I watched Animal Crackers in the bluray edition (released 2016) and I was jarred to hear Groucho sing "I think I'll make her", meaning I will try go go to bed with Margaret Dumont. How could I be surprised to hear that? Simple; the accompany material in the bluray set says this print is from England, where that line was not censored as it was in America.
Harpo was married only once and it very successful. Him and his wife adopted 4 children. He was never known as a womanizer. When the Marx Brother's appeared on Broadway in the 20s, they were highly successful. They would involve the audience in their act.
There's only a bit of the "fish/flask/etc." routine in here. When they performed for the British Royal Family in the 30's, the Prince of Wales sent them a hamper with all the items they used in the sketch ...

cant imagine whats delaying that coffe pot..............where's the cream? I was rolling on the floor and thought i would die laughing when he said that!!!!
It's interesting how Harpo's character changed from these earlier days. He was such a mostly-unlikable rouge, just chaos itself with a big boner all the time. Madness. You took Harpo in small doses. But in those MGM films especially the writers kind of castrated him and made his a lot more of a lovable clown. He was always funny, always incredibly talented, but I think some of his later material did not serve his genius best.
1996 I dressed up as Harpo for a Halloween party. I didn’t speak to anyone the whole night, did the leg trick , blew the horn. It was amazing how my friends and everyone at the party just got used to it as the night went on. My girlfriend at the time wasn’t thrilled.

Almost 100 years later and that horse picture reveal is still hilarious!
To the only man who has ever inspired me to carry around a picture of a horse. To Harpo, one of the true comic genii (more than one genius).
I am reading Harpo's book ... Harpo Speaks ... it is wonderful, he had a happy life ...
It was said the only time Groucho cried was at Harpo's funeral. Wow.
Damn good book, used to be hard to find, I got it in used book store in NY in 85

Harpo cracks me up with his facial expressions.
That leg trick kills me every time.
Silly Harpo, lifting his leg on everything, in a non-dog way... :D
me to.
I love how Harpo keeps giving people his leg to hold for no reason. It's a signiture gag that only he can make funny.
its adorable! lol
at 1:23 chico gives margaret HIS leg lmaoo😂
Lmfao 🤣 💀
Or reasons you haven't worked out yet
It was a gag instead of his hand to shame he gave his leg there's y your reason coming from the man himself
Almost 100 years after and still hilarious.
i was laughing at the same time as wondering 'how does he do it?'
I bet it would still be hilarious in another 100 years
I've been in tears watching Harpo clips... their timing is absolutely perfect
This could go on for years!
That leg lifting gag was a harpo trademark. Hahaha 😂
Harpo always knows how to cheer my up :')
