There are film courses that study just this movie. Nothing has been made like it before or since. Surrealism is not a strong enough word to describe it. No one really ever has.
The absolute brilliance [and audacity for the time] of this few minutes of cinema will never be replicated again. Sorry, I'm old, I've been watching films for sixty plus years now and no one has come even close to just how good this film comedy is. I'll admit Blazing Saddles and Life of Brian are up there, for me personally, I keep coming back to the Brothers.
I've always found this scene the most hilarious comment about the stupid and naïve eagerness for war. The very first time I saw "Duck Soup", I was 8, too young to grasp this idea. But I laughed out loud all the way through the movie. I still do. But I especially love this scene! 🤣

Freedonia is a actual town in New York state, and when the movie came out the then mayor wrote Paramount complaining they should not of used the name Freedonia--it didn't do any good.
Sitting upstage of the Marx Brothers at @1:39, in the dark uniform, is Frederick Sullivan. He was very prolific as an actor and director during the silent era. And he was a nephew of Sir Arthur Sullivan.
Somehow, it's Zeppo who steals this scene for me. He's leading the rally with the other brothers, but while they're actively trying to be goofy, he's more like "What? Isn't this how everyone goes to war?" LOL. One of the few times his shtick worked perfectly.
Don't get me wrong, there's a reason audiences never responded to him the same way, and that's probably how he should be remembered. But there were times they knew what they were doing with him. Look at 0:49 and tell me he's not the only one you could possibly buy thinking this is dead serious.
I really like how this is pretty much the best moment that involves all four of the marx brothers. Zeppo rarely gets to join in on the fun. He always works well to me, I just wish he was given more material in the movies. He was able to play the roles of the others by the way, in fact he apparently got more laughs as captain spaulding than Groucho when Groucho was sick, which urged Groucho to get back on stage as fast as he could. There is actually a scene in the dark in the movie of animal crackers where it is Zeppo who plays Groucho.
I can't even imagine how this was directed. Possibly the brothers had their concept of the sequence and (with the exception of the helmet xylo scene, which took more precision), Groucho just called out, "Copy us: after we do something, then you do it! Now wave your arms around! Now freeze while we do a silly singing thing, then do some fake square dancing stuff with anyone nearby!. Now run around all over the place!" 2:45-2:50 almost seems like the camera person was caught off guard. All around good stuff!
this: and actual final scenes (why not available?): pure genuis. Nothing comes close to satirizing America..."to war, to war..." then let's dance, lets jaunt with our hind legs in the air, 'to war, to war'...get your banjos...and 'the chillun got guns' thats...chilling
Unfortunately, this clip does not include Charles Middleton's (the future Ming the Merciless of Flash Gordon) immortal verse, "This is a fact we can't ignore." He only has two other lines in the film, but he steals the movie as the prosecutor at Chicolini's (Chico Marx) trial for treason.
I know I shouldn't be laughing at this now, but it's still so funny how this starts as a straight up war song but halfway becomes a minstrel show (without the blackface, of course).
who has seen The Grande Budapest Hotel many many people out there and that was like watching The Marx Brothers , the same plot similar story lines over the top but very very funny
actually, no - this is a Cabinet meeting. (Not likely Congress declares war, not with a Democratic House, and even the Republicans in the Senate telling Bonespurs to rein it in.

I was able to listen to CSPAN radio at work back in '98 during the Clinton impeachment hearings. Maxine Waters led the democrats in a splendid rendition of this number when Clinton launched his second Monica War (Operation "Desert Fox") in the middle of the hearings.
As a performer, you're right, he didn't really fit in. Performing wasn't really something he was interested in, but rather something he was kind of forced into. But while Groucho may have made that remark, he was only referring to what Zeppo brought (or didn't bring) to the act. Off camera, the other brothers, and even Jack Benny all agreed that he was the funniest of the bunch, with a wit that could rival Groucho's. He also had the ability to imitate anyone of the brothers if one got sick during a show - which happened with Groucho on at least one occasion.
war shouldn’t be possible unless (1) it’s voted on by congress and (2) anyone voting in favor is forced to do this dance number
They have a different dance... all the way to the bank.
Glad to see that Auto-Tune the News has great taste in comedy.
Three and a half of the best minutes in film history

The Marx Brothers had to have balls of steel to be making this in 1933.

You go, Zeppo! So undersold. I love that guy.
Zeppo kills it in this sequence!

If only all declarations of war could be so jaunty.
Humor at it's most beautiful level. Marx Brothers, nothing but love from me
That part using the soldiers' helmets as xylophones reminds me a lot like Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
No doubt, the Monty Python gang remembered this gag when they were scripting the "Knights of the Round Table" musical number.

On second thought, let's not go to Freedonia. 'Tis a silly place.

@@LampoonGoon no, I'm a groucho.
Anyone else here with strong childhood memories of movie scenes they couldn't grasp the meaning of at age 8 or 9 (but enjoyed immensely anyway)?
To make people genuinely laugh without being dirty is genius.
It's the sign of a good comedian.
They do dirty jokes all the time.
When Harpo was playing the violin and the bow got stuck in his back 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
that was funny
I never noticed that and have seen the scene many times. Thanks!
How we'll cry for Firefly if Firefly should die
Sitting upstage of the Marx Brothers at @1:39, in the dark uniform, is Frederick Sullivan. He was very prolific as an actor and director during the silent era. And he was a nephew of Sir Arthur Sullivan.

Don't see it. At all. He's lost, as usual, among the stars.

I do like Zep's "Oh how we'd cry for Firefly if Firefly should die!" Like he's a suck up but also a bit sarcastic, lol.
Willem Verheij exactly!!
This is a perfect representation of how most European nations reacted to entering WWI.
And how they are reacting now.
The music they’re playing on the soldier’s helmets is American Patrol by Frank White Meacham 😊
Yes, there was a swing/big band version of it during WWII, I didn't realize it was around this early. Thanks!

I am a Japanese, and great movies break the barrier of language.
Indeed, one of the most important impacts moving pictures initially had was its universality. I'm glad you like the film.
