How I am making an indie game soundtrack...

  • In this DevLog I start development on the music for my indie RPG game. It is similar to and inspired by undertale, deltarune and a short hike. This is a unity devlog and as well as that a music tutorial. I will go over making melodies, percussion, combat themes, character themes and ambient themes!
This video is an indie game devlog, like adding DUNGEONS to my open-world undertale fan game RPG and a commercial deltarune indie game. undertales music is very good like meglovania. How much money did I make from my indie games music!? I don't know because I am game developing and game designing it with UNITY as an indie game devlog like code parade and randy. this video contains music
I should probably start proof watching these when I'm done :/

I actually liked your first attempt at a battle theme. I think it would be worth going back with what you've learned and trying to fix the issues you identified, or maybe starting something like it from scratch. The next battle theme sounded good, but it was very noticeably similar to bonetrousle. Copying other songs may be a good way to learn, but something like that definitely shouldn't be in the final game.
If you're having trouble finding style-appropriate sounds, I recommend looking up soundfonts ripped from retro games. EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, and Mother 3 all have great soundfonts which are available.

The first piece sounds like something from a location in Day Of The Tentacle or Sam n’ Max.

I don't ever comment on videos at all but yours recently resonated with me! :)
I'm on a very similar to journey as you - I wanted to make an indie game and make all the music myself, and I wanted my style to be very reminiscent to that of Toby Fox (and after hearing some of Eric Barone's music recently, him too). I wanted to use a DAW that I knew was compatible with soundfonts and most VSTs, so I chose LMMS as my best option. When it came to some of my first songs, I didn't know much of anything, even essential things like knowing I need chords to accompany my melody lmao!
I lost motivation as usual until about a month later I stumbled upon that very same tutorial by PieNinjaProductions, and it kicked me in the ass and convinced me to get more serious about indie game music production. I feel like something we could both relate to is that nearly all of the tutorials out there on YT are for producers who want to make EDM-type music, NOT for aspiring indie game composers, so we have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find something that relates to what we want to create.
As you mentioned in the video, I'm big on leitmotifs as well, but I find it surprisingly hard to incorporate them into my music out of fear of my melodies sounding repetitive across tracks, leading to me having 3 and 4 different leitmotifs for the same character which I don't want lol. And as for chords, I'm past the "my chords sound exactly like my melody" stage and am now at the "my chords don't fit my melody whatsoever" stage. I really don't understand chords, and any and all tutorials seem to once again be tailored to EDM producers who always use a certain song structure that just doesn't apply to what I'm trying to make. But that's all part of the journey, I guess!
Just wanted to write this up in response to your video! Keep working at both your music and your game, and also, very admirable of you to be able to share some of your first-made tracks publicly, even ones you aren't proud of!

Megalovania was the reason why I even played Undertale (and loved it dearly) and it ended up being the first video game song that I made a remix of.
Everyone starts somewhere and the first attempts you shared were great.

For song 2, you got the same structure as megalovania right, you just need to find the right intense instruments that megalovania uses
