  • This is basically me trying my journey with a overlap grip. We always are looking to to improve and this me trying to gain some more bat speed and add a lil power. I’ll try and update the process of converting my grip. Hopefully you guys enjoy it.

    Ive switched over to an overlap grip in my last 2 to 3 BPs and I have actually been enjoying it as well. Some guys are like “man it looks like you’re barely swinging and that ball is flying”. I feel like even when I miss that backspin helps carry that ball! Great explanation man!

    Yeah, I've migrated to the overlap grip over the last few years. It was discouraging at first because I felt like I lost all of my control, but my bat head whip and ability to cut has increased dramatically. Keep going brother. I actually started overlap after watching Bat Hound.

      When I first got to monsta I knew nothing of the overlap. When I started to get involved in testing bats, Dacko taught me to utilize it in order to get top results during those tests. It definitely takes a minute to get comfortable and make adjustments but in the end it added 2-4 mph to my exit velo.

    I’ve been using overlap for years and usually will go with the full overlap as you’ve shown. Sometimes I will do a variation and put top hand 2 fingers on the handle. I also use a grip n rip taper. Feels it helps me grip the bat although does add some to the handle weight. Keep workin it my friend!

    I have used this grip for years and yes it takes a little time to get use to. It does exit velocity and gives you more whip thru the zone. When you get the bottom half of your body into the mix, it’s an incredible swing.

  • @billcarpenter6057

    Hey Bro! It was streaky but fun when grooved. And I can attest to the longer lever. A bigger barrel might be good the first year.

  • @robertandes9753
    @robertandes9753 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I did some testing with my self. The overlap grip helped me keep the barrel back and allows for more extension. I drop my pinky off and straight over lap. Just like you I increase distance and exit velocity. It takes some time to get used to. When I do the baseball grip I don’t get extended and I’m not keeping the barrel back when I swing. Good luck and trust the process. Once you get comfortable with it you won’t wanna go back.

    I have a love/hate relationship with the overlap grip. It absolutely works in terms of increasing batted ball speed and distance, but the loss of bat control is staggering. I find what with an overlap grip that whatever problems my swing has are exacerbated. It's easy to have bad timing, miss the barrel, or top the ball. With the overlap grip your bottom hand can't be sloppy. You want a fairly firm grip on the bat, but not white-knuckling it.
    Anyone with a half decent swing will notice distance gains with the overlap grip immediately. If you're someone who's stuck at the warning track it will result in balls starting to leave the yard. Furthermore it seems like the overlap grip takes less effort. You'll feel like you're whipping the ball rather than trying to bludgeon it (as with a standard grip).
    I don't use the overlap grip full time. If I want base hitting precision I'll generally stick with a standard grip or 2 finger overlap. The full overlap is better for HR situations when bat control isn't super necessary and max distance is needed.
    For someone wanting to learn the overlap grip I'd recommend taking an entire offseason worth of BP. Start with a tee and then move to live pitching. It's a long process, and there will be times when things don't feel right and you want to go back to your old grip.
    Overall the overlap grip is worth it, but no one should think it's super easy to learn. You basically have to relearn how to swing a bat without a top hand generating snap.

    • @FatGuyBP
      @FatGuyBP  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Been hitting overlap for 25+ years. Line up your knuckles then drop down to overlap. It’ll bring your elbows together and will snap your hands over harder through the ball. Throw your elbows into the ball path.
    - to also increase leverage when you overlap interlock your index fingers ( Carl rose technique) that’s how I swing it too.
    - also hit off the tee more while you’re getting used to it.

    Thanks for the video, good work. I went to an overlap golf club style grip a few years ago (interlock pinky on upper hand w/ index of bottom hand). Takes some getting use to for sure. You will get more comfortable with it the more you use it. The snap is so much greater with the overlap.

    I have to correct one thing you said. You said at the beginning of the video that when you go to an overlap grip it gives you more whip and makes the bat longer. I agree with the whip part but without dropping a pinky off the end then you add more length to the bat. If you don't drop the pinky you have the same fixed point at the handle end as your regular grip if that makes sense.

Now i pick up my sons baseball bat and im overlapping and have to correct myself. I also can do the grip your doing but i feel i dont control the bat but yes i do get prolly 5-10mph on my exit velo then a traditional baseball grip. To me it seems the grip fits slowpitch having to generate your own power. Takes alot of work though. Unless you're dropping 1 or 2 fingers underneath the knob of the bat you haven't really given yourself the full whip of the bat, like a true over lap grip is intended to do. All you have done is modified your baseball grip. Start by dropping one finger and as you get better more confident then try two. I have two fingers pinky and ring finger underneath the knob.
