If I screwed up like this, I would consider myself quite awesome! As it is, I've watched with the intensity of a college student who's paying their own way; I've bought paint and all the accoutrements, but I am too terrified to even wet a brush! So to me this effort is just Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
I really loved the painting until the round brush came in. It felt like it all started to go sideways from that point on for me. But I really appreciate the fact that you are willing to share this with your viewers. I am a newbie to watercolor, and seeing an experienced artist like yourself question your choices & be unsatisfied with the outcome really helps me to be more fearless and not get discouraged. There is always something to learn and joy to be found in the process.
I like the background wash and blooms; I like the leaves, both when they were more plain, and also when you added more detail. For me the problem is that the background either needed to be 10x more light or 10x more dark, because you lost the contrast between the leaves and the background, and it all came out "samey" when what you really want is for the central design of the leaves to pop.
I love the detail and veining added to leaves! I feel the ideal stopping point would have been right before you got your bigger brush out and expanded the composition with the deep green! Helped me a lot to know that even YOU fear you’re going to mess up your painting and aren’t always sure when to stop! ❤
I agree that emerald green leaf was when I would have turned back. Even black outline would have brought it all together for contrast as I think the chartreuse was too close to leaves colour and the flowers themselves got lost. I still like it. Love that chartreuse colour for another painting though
I liked the extra detail, and probably would have stopped around 4:37 or gone with a navy blue background. Altogether though I think it turned out great!
I love to watch you use the dagger brush because I can't seem to master that brush. I also appreciate that you've been painting your plants..very cool. This was so pretty with all the leaf colors, shapes & detail...until ...you put that bright background. IMO it took away from the beauty of the leaves. But I appreciate that you shared this with all of us. 😊
I think this is such a great lesson for life. Is it a mistake if we learn? Less is more. PAUSING is so important. I think i liked it in it's simpler phase the best. I LOVE that you shared this. Thank you!
we all make mistakes like this ..its part of the journey....this painting was beautiful but in my opinion the background is the thing that is a bit over....its better if it was white or really pastel color...thank you Kristy for sharing this with us to encourage us ;)
The struggle is real...when is it done? I always, ALWAYS second guess myself. Too much detail, or not enough...if I add a background, will it take away from what I intended on creating? Diving in and just going with it is something I strive to do. Most of the time I'm happy with the outcome and if I'm not, someone else is! I love the end result of this painting ❤ Give me all the colour and all the details!!
I have to say I love all the colors! And there is so much for the eye to discover if one just takes time to look at all the different areas! But I am another absolute beginner so what do I know? I just know what I like and I think if you put that in a frame and hang it in just the right place, it would be awesome. But, once again, I love color! My messes are never this good!😊
I’m an absolute beginner and my work always end up in the bin lol 😅 I love your work and love listening to your thoughts. To this absolute beginner I prefer the painting without the background x
Actually all in all I don't mind the end result that much. Maybe the background is a bit overdone but I like the details you put into the leaves (would have done this with a black and white pen). My art teacher used to say if you finish and you think it is lacking 'darken and darks and lighten the lights'. Yep this can work but I think we can all get a bit excited and over work things. I do ALOT of art journaling (very free style) and I do see many pages where I think they are way overdone - hell Ive even done it myself lol. It's just part of the learning - and we never stop learning. Thank you. 🦘
When you brought out the white round brush to start expanding the artwork, you should have 🛑 stopped! I’m so glad you are willing to share your experience of the good art you create alongside with the times your art work takes a turn for the worst. It lets me know that I can be comfortable with creating art that might not always be good, something that I like & enjoy. Thanks for sharing & being you! 🥰🎨🖌️
My beloved watercolor mentor, Betty, always said, "Stop at 65%! You can always come back-if you HAVE to"😂🤣 Me personally, I love all your stages, right up till you said, "be careful"😂 that's where I'd want to stay, but I would have fallen into "let me toss a background in" too🤦♀️ I have a lot of "beyond 65%" scrap paper!🤣 Love your work Kristy, thanks for making this funner!!🎉
I really liked it before you put the background in. It became iffy and then in the end I liked it again. I think you did an amazing job of bringing it back from the brink. I'm definitely in that place of hating everything I paint and sinking into tossing the brush and leaving the room for weeks. Ugh! This video really helped me a lot! Thanks so much for sharing this invaluable wisdom and encouragement.
Kristy with the painting you were doodling and all those colors used, i don’t see an ounce of “screwed up” moment there! It looks fabulous, so original and so vibrant! How do you call your paintings “screwed up” “Only for your eyes, baby”!!
Aww well you’re so kind. I think for me it felt like a screw up because I had a really hard time finding anything about it, once I stopped, that I liked. I teach everyone here to be kind to themselves and couldn’t listen to my own teaching on this one :(
Watching you paint is my relaxing pleasure, so inspiring to see your dagger in action! But, since you asked, to me this went downhill with the chartreuse background. The beautiful colors of the leaves were overwhelmed by the busyness of the background colors. Maybe sketch black outlines to make those stunning leaves pop?
This was a great video! So, working backward: 1. The end details look good, but it’s hard to tell because… 2. … the background doesn’t speak to me. Or maybe it speaks too loudly. It competes with the beautiful leaves. 3. If you had added the end details at 5:00, it might have been perfection. I enjoy petting my eyes roam over your details. 4. The leaf you’re on at 2:00 is so lovely! On the right it has a subtle dark edge that says to me that its loveliness is starting to fade in the autumn progression. So poignant, a moment in time. Thank you!
I really loved this painting but I love the video even more 😊 because no matter how I paint this video reminds me that I’m not alone when I have a painting that I want to work to death 😬 Thanks girl for sharing this vulnerability with all of us 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I agree with you that in the end, there was a lot if detail. And maybe a white background might have been better? But I love the colors and composition.
Thank you for sharing this! I’m a beginner artist and sometimes I get discouraged when I watch other artists online who are seemingly able to create beautiful pieces effortlessly, every single time. It’s nice to have a reminder that screwing up is part of making art. ❤ Also I loved the addition of the pink for more contrast! It made me want to experiment with a chartreuse/hot pink color palette!
Okay now it’s getting funny because I hit the pause button at EXACTLY The same time you said “Oh God, she’s adding paint”! 😂 Yep! I have no preference to background/no background but to got too dark and busy. As you added more leaf detail, I liked that. I am a detail person as I do lots of pen and ink. (So much for spontaneous! Ha, Ha, Ha) LOUISE
I’m still watching for the first time and reacting real time. At the 4:10 minute mark I DO like it alot. In fact I prefer watercolor with this ethereal look. Light, transparent for the most part. There are often times when I watch you paint live, that I am whispering “stop”about 3/4 of the way through. I don’t hate anything you paint. I just love some things more when they’re not so fussed over. I hope when you said you wanted to hear from us, that this is what you were looking for. Obviously I am a huge fan, or I wouldn’t be on your Patreon and I wouldn’t have 15 Kristy Rice originals, right?
I’m all about the feelings- and trying Creative Paula’s ‘I Hated It so I repeat the processes again and again until I make one I don’t hate’ has totally blown my mind! So maybe you stopped painting about ten versions too soon? I just feel good watching you paint, very satisfying no matter where you decide to stop❤❤❤
I don’t think it was a failure, perhaps less successful than your usual work? My thought was the bright background feels like it pushed all the leaves back and drowned them. The leaves lost their saturation which is where it got lost for me. But there’s definitely a lot to learn from this ❤
I like your color use. Honestly i preferred some things a little less detailed and the background less saturated and neutral, but im basic af. I stuggled with this same thing on my last floral, too much or little color, too much or little detail. I think analyzing our own products helps refine our tastes.
So...wellllllll....here's the thing. A maximalist will look at your final and wonder what's wrong with them because they love you and they love your picture. And they are right. A minimalist might suggest stopping just before bringing the size 6 brush in. They might be right but hey, this is not a painting for them so who cares? At the end of the day, it's your painting and if you don't like it, then you are right. If you love it, you are right. Personally, I am a minimalist but I love this and am still going to try make something similar partly because I'd like to be as gifted as you, partly because I need loads more practice but mostly because your picture has inspired me to try mastering leaves so I can make pictures like this. So thank you. You are right! ❤
See, i think it just needs a little contrast between the leaves and the background- give it spme shadows behind the leaves and theyll pop right off that charteuse! The ones you did do that with look ver 3-D!
After you added the background you did the right thing but not adding the background would also have been the right thing and maybe a more milky pink focused background. The background took the contrast focus that you got the itch for with the first expansion and then the green and vibrant pink. Once you added those wnd caught the chartreuse bug itch it was over. I do think you made the best out of what you made and you did multiple right things in response to questionable decisions. I think this is the healthiest art study exploration ever though. Theres no right answer, only seeing what you can make out if what you've done 😉. Love it.
I really wanted everyone to realize they know how to critically examine a piece. Just like you did. It’s such a huge learning moment to speak the critique out loud!
Where you first ask “is it finished”, i would say no. Its not done at that point. I’m reading/going through your watercolor book and know you rather paint bold and fast. This one could have gone either way.
I think I would have stopped around the 4 minute mark and would have not had put that clump of semi transparent leaves on the left at all. But who knows what I would have done in the moment 😆
You should have stopped when you did the detail on the pink foreground leaf. Everything after that started to clutter it up. I don't know how many times I've done the same thing. It makes me feel better than a watercolor maven like you still screws up sometimes! We've all been there, girlfriend.
I loved it until you got out the bigger brush. You should have listened to your gut and stopped at that point. Trust your intuition! That’s probably one of the most important lessons for all of us in most areas of our lives.
If I screwed up like this, I would consider myself quite awesome! As it is, I've watched with the intensity of a college student who's paying their own way; I've bought paint and all the accoutrements, but I am too terrified to even wet a brush! So to me this effort is just Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Wet that brush!!!
Totally with you Shannon! I have wet someone else's brush in a workshop once. 😊
I love it. I would of been so proud of myself.
Thank you!!
I didn't mind the pink, it was when you started with the background.
Yurp lol
I mean all I see is beauty. For me art is what makes you happy . I love it ❤.
😘😘😘 I love that!!
Stop at 4:38 - that bigger brush had ideas of its own, and those ideas & colors didn't jibe well with the previous work!😁
I like that :)
I loved just the leaves Ma’am, your detail on them is gorgeous…
Thank you so much!
I really loved the painting until the round brush came in. It felt like it all started to go sideways from that point on for me. Yup that round brush is where it all went south lol!
I totally agree with you.
And when it's all done.... I love it!
You’re kind!
I’ve started pottery classes and one thing that’s said is, “know when to call it a pot”. Love to watch your videos- you are an amazing artist!
Ahhhh I’m going to use that!!!!!
I like the background wash and blooms; I like the leaves, both when they were more plain, and also when you added more detail. Sooooo right!!!
Yes it’s important to know when to stop
I like the added contrast, it helps fix the background colors so similar to the painting.
Me too
To my eye the bright green and pink leaf threw me. Love the background and the detail!
I love the detail and veining added to leaves! I feel the ideal stopping point would have been right before you got your bigger brush out and expanded the composition with the deep green! Ok up until background I think.😊
I’m so glad this helped you in some way :)
Yup 100%
I like the details. 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Loved it until 5:11 when you added the green and pink. I really liked the background colour but without the solid green areas.
Truth!
I think I would've stopped there. The green and pink were just too different for me. Then the entire style changed.
I liked the white space.
I want it back!!!
I liked the extra detail, and probably would have stopped around 4:37 or gone with a navy blue background. Altogether though I think it turned out great!
I like the idea of navy
It is nice knowing a professional does this too!!
Indeed :)
The way I look at it is if I screwed up oh well! Did I have fun? Did I get out my watercolour and practice I sure did ❤❤❤😊

The bigger brush!!
I agree with you that in the end, there was a lot if detail. And maybe a white background might have been better? But I love the colors and composition.

The enemy of "good" is "better" said a wise person once!
I like it at about 4 minutes in...
I think I would have stopped around the 4 minute mark and would have not had put that clump of semi transparent leaves on the left at all. But who knows what I would have done in the moment 😆
I liked it with leafs but not filling in. No……no😮
😂😂😘😘
Loved it until you got the big brush out, then you spoilt it 😢 Love your videos Kristy 😊
😊 thank you
Definitely needed contrast, a bit muddier than your usual work.
Yeah I agree
I learned that from you 😊
I liked the painting before the background. I would have skipped it and gone straight to painting then pink leaf details.
I love the color of the background but yeah just not here particularly lol
❤
You should have stopped when you did the detail on the pink foreground leaf. Everything after that started to clutter it up. I don't know how many times I've done the same thing. It makes me feel better than a watercolor maven like you still screws up sometimes!
We've all been there, girlfriend.
Always keepin’ it real here!!
I loved it before you added pink and the chartreuse.
The chartreuse killed it
3.49.... should have stopped.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Curious, what had you planned to do with it.
Everything you do is basically lovely but the chartreuse background made everything disappear. You needed more contrast in this one . ❤
Agreeee!
Love the foliage but a little too much chartreuse
Yesaahhhh 😅😅😅
I love the leaves but not the background. It’s to much.
Yeaaahhhh
I loved it until you got out the bigger brush. You should have listened to your gut and stopped at that point. Trust your intuition! That’s probably one of the most important lessons for all of us in most areas of our lives.
You're right!
To me the color isn’t bad it’s the placement of some leaves that doesn’t make sense K
You’re the first to say it!!! It needed more context of stems or perhaps a pot :)?
