Thanks for reminding me about mop brushes - I was going through my old pieces thinking “how did I do that?” and when I read your comment just now it dawned on me that I used a really big juicy mop brush! Thanks! 😊
I used this technique as an exercise to gain control with my calligraphy pen to get even thick and thin strokes which is especially important in a copperplate style scrip. I love how you expanded this beyond one tool. Great tips. Thank you!
I just tried your suggestion with the apple & different line qualities. Now I see what you mean! This IS helpful. I've seen other artists do this but not necessarily talk about using the side of the pencil It is definitely more dynamic. Thank you for this little jewel today!
🤯 love this! I’ve been painting watercolor 6+ years, before that it was drawing. I kind of abandoned any consideration of thinking about lines because I was doing focused on shapes and values. But this is making me reconsider how game changing it is to make interesting marks ! Thankyou 🫶🏻

This is (for a change 😂) the first time line quality has made enough sense to actually use in a real piece of art (as opposed to a piece of art because I have no idea the goal I am trying achieve, in this case line quality exercises 😂😂😂). I’ve gotten back into watercolor from being absent since 2000 I took weekly lessons from 1992/1999. And it wasn’t fun. I was in my 40’s all this time and though I had lovely paintings nothing was fun. Your channel has brought the fun back into watercolor. I’m so looking forward to changing to find my style instead of coping pictures for beauty. I was quirky , fun subjects and styles of painting. Thank you so so much at my senior age I’m feeling giddy about watercolor. 🙏😺💕🫶🌟
@@lindsayb2629 OMG! YESSS - I pulled out my Sailor Fude pens (2 different degrees!) and cleaned them up and I’m putting fresh waterproof ink in them - eel black and either navy or Lexington gray both by Noodler’s Ink. Those line variations are ah-mazing with these pens!
You are the first person I have ever seen break down how to achieve this style. Wow! I have a particular painting (muscadines and muscadine vines) that I’ve done twice now, but it always turns out too realistic. This style would suit it perfectly. Gestural drawings? I struggle with line quality as I tend to have too heavy a hand with my sketches and my inking a piece I have painted. I have saved this video to try again and again to remind myself what I need to remember!
Oh yeah - the tip about keeping your old art - that’s a winner! How do you organize your old work? By color? Warm vs cool? By medium? By degree of completion? Simple Washes vs pieces you don’t really love yet but you don’t exactly know what you’re going to do with it? Thinking out loud here. Because I keep the practice sheets from when I was learning how to use a new brush or learning how to make different leaves - and now I have been using them for the beginning of my new abstract mixed media series!
@@sallykirkstephens8415 Reverse coloring is when the colors are already there and you draw the lines of what you see. There’s actually a coloring book series called The Reverse Coloring Book by Kendra Norton. They are on Amazon. She’s on instagram too. 💜
@@sallykirkstephens8415 If I may... it's when lines are put down after or on top of color. Like painting a paper with watercolors in a random fashion or maybe specific images, then go back in and draw lines/images/doodles or whatever you feel moved to do, based on what you see in the painting.

Oh nice! I love my kakimori dip pen (which isn’t a fountain pen). I have the same brass nib and sakura holder that you have. If you rotate the pen as you use it, you’ll be able to use the full amount of the ink on the nib.

Why are mop brushes called what my non native speaker brain associates with it is, it is used to mop up too much water with it.
