Getting mentally ready for this year’s BWCA trip. Miss your videos - just wanted to say thanks even though you haven’t posted in a while. Your trip videos got me hooked on taking trips to the BWCA when I first found you on TH-cam in 2017. Been every year since. Also they were motivating for me to watch as I recovered from open heart surgery a year ago to get better so I could take a trip 5 months later. Hope you are doing well!
So what is up with the green fir limbs for the fire? Cutting green limbs? Someone correct me if I am wrong but thought that was forbidden, if not against the law.
To what are you referring? We don't cut down/off anything. Sadly, some people do. Many times when you arrive at a site, there is rotted, green, or otherwise unusable wood by the 'pit'. It is against park rules, but I cannot speak on it's legality. Thanks for watching!
Heading up to Horseshoe and Vista lake area NE of Brule in a few weeks. Let me know if you guys have any fishing recs for those lakes. Fun videos...love the D&D quotes! Thanks for any help!
Mark and Betsy Starkson we base camped on Vista for most of the trip and did ok fishing there. Our trip was the last weekend of September 2017- early October. We had enough walleye to eat every day. Caught some monster smallies and a 34” northern too! We fished on Meed the last day and did pretty well there too. I’d be happy to share fishing spots. Send me an email!
@37:44 When you say leeches, do you mean live ones? I thought live bait wasn't allowed in BWCA? I was planning on bringing some worms in addition to various crankbaits, spinners, and of course jigs + synthetics. I really appreciate the input of some experienced BWCA canoers. Thank you kindly, Li
spent most of the video trying to figure out who the red headed guy reminded me off and it finally hit me. Atz Lee from Alaska Frontier. Great video guys and remember to take more booze next year!
Fan of your videos I do have a question - it seems you do mostly bobber with leech and have success - was wondering are you anchoring and fishing spot to spot or...?
Enjoyed the video. Just got back myself. One thing I wanted to add ..I had 20 pnd braided snipped off by a pike while fishing. Im a believer in steel. :-) We ran into a loooot of big perch this yr. also. Have never had that happen before.
I’m using an iPhone 7 and a GoPro Hero 5. All of the audio is directly from the devices. In some of the older videos, I’m using a flip camera. They don’t make them anymore. Thanks for watching! Don’t forget to give us a “thumbs up” and subscribe if you like our content and want more!
I’m considering in buying a GoPro but I’m concerned about the audio recording so when played back you’ll be able to here it. They offer external mic hookups but it sounds like they aren’t needed. Thanks for the reply. It’s helpful.
Honestly, the GoPro audio on the Hero 5 is okay - not great. I think I prefer the iPhone 7 over it - especially for my trips. The battery and memory go a lot further. Consider buying a used iPhone 7 to take along.
Did I catch that right that you guys use a good sized rock tied to rope for an anchor? Is that your go-to or have you found anything that works better that you bring in yourselves?
Great video guys. Can’t wait until September 7th when our crew of seven hits the water. We’re entering at Sawbill heading to Cherokee and exiting through Burnt. Hoping to catch a few “eyes” along the way. We also eat at the Northwoods Family Grille for breakfast. It’s a very friendly place. Thanks for your videos. Is there a 2017 video?
Thanks again for watching. That is a great loop. We did that in our 2011 video. You will definitely get some walleyes in September. Yes, we have videos for 2011, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18 (F stands for Fishing).
Upper Lip Outdoors We have decided to base camp on Burnt Lake and do side trips to other lakes in the area. Our crew made of three old guys and we aren’t getting any younger.
Wayne Moureau that’s a good plan. Plenty to explore. Make sure to Leave No Trace! Unfortunately, We are learning that some people have been visiting our little area have been not subscribing to the LNT mantra. Let me know how your trip goes!
@@mstarksoUpperLipOutdoors if you want a real adventure. Drive up to Grand Marais. Head up the Gunflint trail all the way to the end. Go to Voyageur outfitters. Talk with Mike the owner. Rent a Winona Minnesota 3 kevlar canoe and some carbon fiber paddles. Use there tow service to carry you and your canoe across the large part of Saganagon. To Hook Island. Paddle across the boarder into Canada and into Cache Bay. This is Quetico Park. Much less crowded than BWCA. And then ranger station. After there. Paddle to Silver Falls Portage. I have never seen the bottom of those falls. 32ft I think. You are now in Saganagona. I may have the two lake names mixed up. Then paddle to Deadman s portage. It's not bad. The first portage is worse. With steady paddling you can get across deadmans portage by 3:30 Camp on this lake. And fish in the evening and a bit the next morning, early. I have some good spots there. Then paddle Northwest to the outlet. I believe the Melign river. This will lead you to Kinippi Lake. But to get there you will need to traverse 7 portage around waterfalls. I have a few spots in Kinippi. And in one spot you will probably be able to feed an Eagle. It will fallow u to the narrows. Fish for 2 days then head back To the first campsite. The minnesota 3 canoe is a 3 person canoe. And is 20 ft long. But weighs 54 lbs. And is very quiet and fast to paddle. We saw a wolf on one of the portages You will need Remote Access Permits, Canpass. And Quetico permits. Let me know if you want more info
TIM Flugaur-Leavitt LOVE the QUETICO! That’s where we cut our teeth. We used to drive up to the north side of the park and put in by the French Lake Ranger Station, paddle down Pickerel, to Russel. We went several times in this area (probably 7-8 trips). This started back in the mid eighties, before anyone had a Kevlar canoe. We actually use the same canoe today. Have you ever been in that area? We haven’t been able to get back up there since ‘07. The hope is to bring our kids up there within in the next 5 years. We may do that same trip next year, or, like you said, get a RAP and come up through the south. Also, working on a Kevlar, probably a III. Then, me and my boys only need one canoe! Thanks for watching and reaching out.

really enjoy your videos.. We are now planning a trip to the BWCA in September and your videos were part of the inspiration. Thanks for sharing them
I'm going through and listening to these videos while I do tasks around the house. Man I'm jonesing to get back to the bwca so bad right now!

What breading do you use when you fry the fish? I haven't found a premade mix I like yet.

The use a basketball net with rocks in it. Gather up the bottom end with a caribeaner and tie your rope to the rope end
What is your favorite camp site on burnt? Also, do you ever encounter bears?
Miss your vids!
What kind of camera do you use?
I built the grain setup there in town in Lonsdale mn.

Rock tied to a rope.
Great to see ya back on the trail
Just curious, you guys still around doing this?
Working on it.

Can't you just reuse the leftover cooking oil for the fish?
Yes, we often do. You have to be careful, though, you don’t want it to get too dirty. Thanks for watching!
is that a superior one or a quetico 5000 ?
i've watched this video a few times and have now just noticed the WCHA lanyard ryan is wearing. Nice! The haydays of gopher hockey.

@35:35
What do you recommend for booze(type and quantity for 3 dudes)?
dear god.. that sounds like something I would drink in high school... we just take scotch and sometimes a bottle of wine and enjoy it with a cigar
Bourbon, Wild turkey 101 is traditional for us. It just tastes like the wilderness. .75 ltr per person per day for beginners.
I used to hate instant coffee out there too until we found Starbucks instant coffee's. That's all we use now. Great video!
Thanks for the video.
I just don't see the connection between BWCA and Booze.
Accidents can happen at anytime.
Yes, you are correct. This is something that we've discussed and are planning on cutting back on that significantly. Thanks for watching!
