- Once again Pete heads into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for his annual fishing trip and is not disappointed! A gem of the northern United States, the BWCA has over a million acres of untamed and roadless forest, designed to make the campers feel like true visitors to this spectacular natural setting. For the first time, Pete's group is getting Canadian Quetico passes for day fishing, and will be camping on the Canadian/U.S. Border to take full advantage of the endless options. Lake Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike are all fair game and the wildlife is as diverse as the top notch fishing!

I took the trip with my dad and brother when I was a 12-year-old boy in 1988. So cool and memorable! I will never forget it. Heading back with my brother June of 2023.

Love your *TOPPLING GOLIATH* hat! I live north of Decorah, 12 miles in Burr Oak. I love pickin' up a couple Growlers of Pseudo Sue every time we go to town for groceries!
Pseudo is King! Such a great town and brewery. Trout fish down there regularly.
@@AnglingUploaded I love trout fishing Coldwater, North (and South) Bear and my favorite; Waterloo Creek! We have an 8-1/2# Natural Brown on the wall from there and it has the big bottom hook jaw! Love your vids!
I went to a boys camp one summer in Hayward and at age 14 spent 2.5 weeks canoeing and portaging the boundry waters. Will be with me till I die.
There is no letting go once you've experienced it Russ! Get back up there - its waiting for you.
I do love the fish gripper. Especially when catching dozens of smallies on crank baits

I'd have a seriously hard time not jumping into the water off that canoe. Man is it beautiful out there! Heading up in a week!!
Dragging that canoe on the rocks at about 35 minutes

I'll be there in a week! with my 14 yr old son. Grew up in Southern MN, and fished "Up North" many times, but Pa wasn't into portaging canoes for 5, so this is my first trip to the Great BWCA @ 60 yrs young.

I was up in that area 2 weeks ago. We were on Big Lake not in the bwca but close. Fishing was good even with the bug hatch and 85 degree water temps.
Same here Brandon. Just got back. 90 degrees, no wind, mayflies and endless fish on the line.

Thanks! We bring in leeches and jig a lot. 4 to 5 inch floating raps or topwaters for bass action. Powerbait also works well bit its tough to beat live bait.
I have been going to the cache bay ranger station for 35 years. Janice worked thier the entire time. But died of a brain tumor in the last 3 years. She probably collected everything in thier. She raised her kids out there

Thanks Say! Rock anchor. Basically a bag or net you can add rocks to. Multiple mid size rocks are better than 1 or 2 big ones.

No black flies but mosquitos usually peaking. They show up like clockwork 9 or 10ish.
Amazing video. Going to exact same spot in early sept. What type of line were you using? Looked like 6lb? Also loved the TG hat!
6lb mono trilene is my go to. I usually bring an extra spool with 8lb braid for trolling. Cuts the water better and gets cranks down where they need to be.

Why did you need to check in at the Cache bay station if only camping on mn side?
Word of advice. Pinch the barbs down or grind off on crank baits. I we have been doing it for 30 years ever since our body need to push a hook through his thumb. Cut off the tip and pull it back through. He nearly fainted
We had RABC permits allowing us to fish in Canada during the daytime.

Not sure of the brand? Amazon likely. Extendable handle a big help. They usually are average quality - but being able to strap it on the side of your pack is invaluable. Rubber net helps a ton with rapalas involved. Cloth nets can be a nightmare with barbs.
An angling TH-cam channel and you've never had a treble break?! Lucky you! Gotta replace the trebles on most lures it seems these days. They mostly come with cheap hooks!
Ooh boy those lakers coming up from the depths! Either lakers or sturgeon, so if you're not setting stink on the bottom, it's probably a laker! Good fish!
Not so pro tip #1: when you hand the net to an angler who’s got a fish on, hand it to him handle first. Just sayin’. Great vid! I’m headed up there this May. Just curious, did that loon actually attack your stringer fish?

It has been a few years since we (my son & I) were on Ottertrack Lake - such a beautiful lake... Anyhow, I was wondering if that was the only lake you guys fished? Or, did you slip into other lakes?
We fish parts of knife for the lake trout. Most of our walleye was ottertack. Mostly Canadian fishing..

Do you have electronics, you are able to tell the depth and detect ledges. If so what are you using?

Its actually a fishtrax! Fabulous small unit. 4 aaa batteries. Lithiums are light and last the longest. 8 got me through the trip. Suction cup transducer. Highly recommend!
Where do you park your car while camping weeks on end please explain.

Hey John. Most access points or outfitters will have large parking areas to leave your car. BWCA is mostly canoes but some lakes on the edge allow up to 25hp motors. The Big Sanagana tow we used in this was through a lake not inside the BWCA. They drop you on the edge so you dont have to paddle a huge lake with motor boats.

Mid June. Bugs on fire! Generally if they bugs are lit up the fish are too. The fish tax..

How did you charge your camera batteries during your trip? You shot a lot of video and got some fantastic shots
I used a Nomad 7 Plus last trip and never ran out of charged batteries between my phone and gopro
Efficient and light lithum batteries are key. 3-4 lbs worth!
What lures and baits did you use? And which ones would you recommend

Thanks for taking to the time it takes (which is a lot) to film, edit, and upload your material. I would recommend NOT using those big yellow plastic pliers you use to handle fish. It damages them unnecessarily. Also recommend sharing the baits you are using, the depth, water temp, etc.
We mostly jig with leeches or troll F5 raps. colors vary. fish grips do not close completely and do no damage to the fish becuase of a 1/4 gap. they are not a "pliers". they greatly increase your ability to manage the fish and prevent it from landing in the boat saving injury to the fish and fisherman. Even lake trout with sensitive mouths do well and its easier to protect the slime that is their lifeline. supporting the fish is key.

Enjoy your videos,but think you keep some of the fish out to long,and over stressing them especially the lake trout from a long fight and 130 feet down!

Powdered gatorade plastic. And another we have had for 10 years. Also plastic works like a charm. Beyond illegal I don't need the weight in my pack. I am old and tired.
Why did you need to stop in Cache Bay
We had Canadian RABC permits

But I thought you said you could not touch land on Canada side.
You don't need a rabc permit to fish Canadian water. Just a Canadian fishing license.
I have been through Cache Bay many time going up through Silver Falls portage.
Beautiful falls. Quetico has far fewer campers
@Golfish You need a passport or permit to cross into Canada. RABC gives you day access. You also have to check in to make use of either. Quetico on the bucket list!

GCI outdoors - my all time favorite!
Curious about your camera equipment? GoPro ?
Gopro 8 mounted and for time lapses. Everything else is samsung galaxy. Cameras don't add a lot of weight but the batteries are 4-5lbs for 8 days of filming..

@@AnglingUploaded do you take multiple memory cards? Seems like you have the camera running often. Multiple batteries or do you have a way to recharge the batteries while you are out there? I am going in June with my 16 year old son and would love to have some videos of us having fun!
