Camouflaged Octopus Makes Marine Biologist Scream Bloody Murder

- Bet you can't spot the octopus in this video. When marine biologist Roger Hanlon caught this creature on camera, he said he screamed bloody murder. And no wonder. Did you see that thing appear out of nowhere?!
After a decade of further research, Hanlon still doesn't know how the eight-armed animal pulled it off. Hanlon and his colleagues at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole study a group of underwater creatures called cephalapods, which includes octopi like this one, as well as squid and cuttlefish.

I still find it amazing that they can imitate texture too.
That shit is crazy! Definitely the most remarkable animal.
That's what's so dope. They're the dopest by far.
They're Aliens from Saturn.
I agree it's absolutely amazing.
@@randomnobodyplaythrough7770 is it too far off to imagine a lane walking mammal camouflaging itself among us?
Scream bloody murder? There is literally no sound. LOL
+BeerSlayer863
Who says the videographer was the Marine Biologist?
They both were, most likely. I'd say the person that described the incident wasn't the person that did the freaking.
It could just be the title the uploader decided to use, as his 'hook'.
You can tell if someone is screaming underwater, his bubbles come out like mad and his spastic movements. lol
The guy next to him wouldn't hear it, though.
That's why you use hand signals you both know, and why scientists use boards and grease markers to convey what they want to say, down on the bottom, or while they're waiting at the rope for the next ascent time - to prevent nitrogen narcosis.
(It's rare to be anywhere near a chamber to save your life when you're out at sea.)
To record undersea audio, to capture whale's 'songs', a tethered recording device is used from the vessel.
Did you know that if you speed up the sound of a whale's call, that it sounds exactly like a bird tweeting?
Cool, huh? ^_^

"It's SOo bad😫!"
The original video has sound:

She screamed it but the frequency of the scream was do high that it surpassed human hearing
The eyes screamed bloody murder of prestine beauty and awe ness of capturing a once in lifetime majestic creature 👽
Well, I wasn't disappointed.
What a blood curdling scream
Let's just be thankful that there's no land animal that have camouflage ability at this level. Imagine walking in the mountain and the grass just turned into a monster. Or worse, imagine if they mimic humans.
Or there is and we just haven't found it yet due to its camouflage ability...
Man, if those things could mimic humans, we'd be in big trouble.
Well we already got walking stick and leaf bugs so just wait…
mimic humans? what is this vita carnis? 😭
Ever seen the movie Mimic?
Wait a minute... How do we know this was the only octopus? How do we know the plant or coral or whatever it was that the octopus appeared to materialize out of wasn't in fact ALL octopus???
Although many years after this comment was made, it has caused my brain to go down a rather scary rabbit hole, or maybe octopus hole, I'm no longer sure of anything...
@@1975EJLwanna know another crazy rabbit hole. The UFOs and flying saucers we all speculate about, they aren’t actually aliens. They evolved on Earth and now live in our ocean
What if everything is an octopus

Octopi are extremely intelligent creatures. It probably knew that it would be a waste of time/energy to try and hide itself since it was discovered in the place. Another thing to note about octopus is that their color often reflects their mood; white is often thought to be fright, red is thought to mean anger or aggression; shapes are also thought to mean something but afaik there is no consensus as to what. At the end, with its color changes, it's pretty much telling the camera to bugger off.
Imagine if you can could change the colour and texture of your skin just by willing it to be so. That's insane.
We can, it's just involuntary; when we have a deeply emotional cry, the area below our eyes redden due to the acidity and quantity of our tears, and when we have a sudden hightened moment of joy or fear we might get goosebumps. These aren't technically "at will," sure, but still. :)
@@scbtripwire That's neat, thanks fot sharing! :)
Liberals can change sexes at will.
Great camouflage! By the way I recommend Sue Thomson's Color of Distance sci fi novel about a woman stranded on a planet where the aliens communicate entirely by changing skin color and texture. They had to change her so that she could communicate by skin too.
You tell me the marine biologist screamed bloody murder but the video has no sound... So why even say the biologist screamed, there's no point? The camouflaged Octopus was pretty sick so I'm not gonna complain, but misleading title mates.
You're new to Britain aren't you?
Truly amazing! Even takes on the shape and texture.
Astounding! And one of the very few NON clickbait Octopus videos on TH-cam, thank you. ✌🏼❤️
Linus actually did it the absolute madman
+Animurh LEGEND
Nature is amazing, its like some ancient alien aquatic morphing species lol
Typical Linus...
+RedStone Films Video pls?
I don't know, but this was a long time ago. It was something to do with LinusTechTips though :P
Well played, octopus, well-played!
That is amazing, I have to see more of my beautiful planet.
After seeing this and the recent ufo shapeshifting videos
I highly doubt the planet is "ours"
It's times like this that make me want to hug an octopus...
who the fuck is linus?
Without the slow motion I wouldn't be able to notice him camuflaging so rapidly
you know this scared the hell out of me when i was a kid
What or who is LINUS????? Please????
He maxed out his stealth
I clicked for the octopus, and was not disappointed.
I mean, why wear optic suits with cameras and stuff like that. Just strap on an Octopus and you will be invisible!
Linus didn't let us down
+juurus indeed
+juurus Video pls?
This just Blows my mind
Amazing how sea creatures camouflage themselves !!
That wasn't just camouflage, that was displacement mapping.
Octopus: I took me half a day to camouflage and now you come along and ruin everything, FUCK OFF I'M DONE HERE!
Crazy how people eat these highly intelligent creatures.
I'm here because of Linus.
+Brett Bell Video pls?
I find this creature to be intriguing, amazing, beautiful and terrifying all at the same time
Thank you for the great shot!
Thank you doctor this explains the lecture. VERY APPRECIATED

never again linus.... never again
There is only one thing to say, that octopus is cool.
this is still my favorite video. i remember seeing it for the first time, like more than ten years ago (there was another version uploaded to TH-cam that had "shapeshifter" in the title, which has since been replaced by this one in 2013), and it blew my mind more than anything i had ever seen before.
we should all be praying that the Octopi NEVER figure out how to survive on dry land, or Humanity is DOOMED...
Who knows maybe something similar is there already but we can't see them 👀😆
@@nicola1466 😳 are they in the room with me right now???

To be able to comprehend their environment to know oh I have to make my skin bumpy, it’s hard to wrap my brain around the intelligence of that
I love how people are saying the title is misleading. What, did you expect an actual scream? He's underwater...derp.
And there it is thanks Linus
+jedge0001 Video pls?
Dude that’s so crazy how that’s even possible
HOW DID BRO RUN IN UNDERWATER THAT FAST
Linus your god damn sandals w/ socks

Like the aliens on "Signs"
That basically science fiction how well they can do that
Do they use texture of objects to express unevenness by making the body like a thin film?
Mimic octopi are pretty awesome tbh, but that scream blew my ears out
You might be surprised to find that evolution IS intelligent design
Amazing beyond belief, thank you for sharing.
Came here to see this video form the joe rogan podcast . Amazing! Anyone else here since they couldn’t show it on the podcast?
That is the coolest thing!!
props to JRE fans!
I wonder if Discover Magazine is surprised too.
Where does he ‘scream bloody murder’?? He swam right after it! Wildlife HATES to be observed, hunted or discovered. Leave them in peace! If uou are lucky enough to discover something amazing - show off how gentle, passive and respectful u can BE!
The octopus was like 'Enjoy your ink. Sucker!'
29 people got jump-scared by the octopus and down voted this.
Marine Biologists were diving suits and breathing apparatus so it is impossible to scream. I know sound can travel underwater, but not in the same way it can in air and screams certainly cannot be heard or even made under water. That was my point. I never said there isn't sound under water. Before resorting to insulting someone, read what they've typed.
wow he's better than chameleón
What the fuck just happened?! That was amazing!!!
Was it not able to move until it completed the transition?
Cool
But
Have you seen the marvelous breadfish? Swimming in the ocean.
The marvelous breadfish. It's like an inverse sandwich
possibly, but it's also likely that the initial camo was one he's used to acquiring. maybe he was frightened and stumbling to make sense of the surface.
There’s the aliens.
The way it changes color is crazy
Fr it’s so unreal
ohh, you know he is angry
Linus pls
+Rick sanchez The handsome scientist (in prison) Video pls?
yo, leave hank alone
That was a slo-mo reverse of the original film just so we could see where it was.
is the scream in the room with us right now?
Fascinating creatures I can’t wait to learn more about them
Too bad they did not have a crab to offer the octopus.
"I Don't understand, therefore God."
Such a humbling experience. The best flippers I could afford...
where are my screams, monty?
Linus made me....
I was searching for this video after I had red the book “Are we smart enough to understand how smart animals are?”. And yeah it is intriguing!!!
Except that's wrong.
You can scream underwater and it can be heard by someone else. It just doesn't cover the same distance.
They are the aliens.
I didn't even see him at first
I got jumpscared
Where is the sound?
no sound underwater
Came here from Joe Rogans FB page lol
why was his second attempt at camo (end of the vid) so bad?
did it take him a while to get in the first position or something?
WOW! this illusion we call life is crazy!!
Mimic octopus are cool, but the ones in Antarctica under the ice are scary, if that's true about killer octopus.
awesome find
Most amazing animal ever
Magnificent creature!
