No new pet will ever replace another, but getting another dog for example will allow you to form another bond and this can help with the grieving process if your previous dog passed. I think it's similar to your arowanas. They will never replace Buddy, but they give you joy and let you enjoy keeping the species again.

When my dog passed away I waited less than a month to adopt two puppies.. it is not about ‘replacing’ anyone. He was an individual, just like people are, and I could never ever replace him, even if I tried. I will miss him until the day I die. However, I need animals in my life and around me. I literally need them. They help me with a pain condition, and one of them is now my service animal. If a human friend died would you never make any other friends?
Furthermore, I will say I rescued my two boys when they were 4 days old from an animal shelter parking lot. They were bottle babies and would have very likely been put to sleep had I not taken them. They needed me, and I needed them too. I will always adopt, and I will always make room in my broken heart for more love when it’s time to say goodbye.
you still should get more sharks not to replace your old ones, but to learn from experience and try to make the lives of your new sharks better.
With dogs, you're likely going to end up getting another one if yours dies, probably not immediately, but I've normally found another within a year when one dies.
Also, it could be a rather interesting video for the aquarium if you go through all of the changes and uses since you built it...
For the pets, yeah, I always will miss my first dog liger. But a few years after him and rusty died we finally got another dog. I don’t really see it as a betrayal because we know they aren’t suppose to be with us forever - if you lose a friend, you’ll eventually meet new ones. Just like how Buddy wasn’t your last arowana
When we lost our precious Wubbie (female kitty) we were beside ourselves with grief. Our lives were consumed with sadness. A friend shared a piece of wisdom... "You don't replace a pet, the new baby reminds you of the old one. Every time you say 'Oh look Wubbie would have done this or that instead. It keeps you reminded of just how awesome they were and how unique each pet is!" We are currently on our third kitty and we are so happy we followed that advice!
Honey is most definitely "family"... she's your "fur daughter"!!!! I lost my fur daughter, Katie, after 16 yrs, 3 months and 2 days.... she can NEVER be replaced!!! 💖💖💖 But while I probably won't go out "looking" for another dog, (kids out of the house, hubby retired, looking forward to doing some traveling etc) my heart is not closed to the idea of having another one if the situation is right and one needs a forever home.......

I agree with never replacing a pet, but I would never turn down the idea of getting another pet.
When my dog Zsa-zsa died, we got another dog a few months later. Most people asked how we could replace our dog, but the dog that we got was a dog a friend found abandoned on the street. She needed a home and we were able to give her that. She could never replace Zsa-zsa, but no dog could ever replace her
When my baby girl died I swore I would never get another dog but A stray showed up at my house and he found a new home with me. The boxer I had will never be replaced but their is room for more animals that need a home and people to care for them. I guess I just have a soft hart for things that need my help.

When a pet you've had for years dies, it hurts. You will feel pain for a long time, but in time that pain will pass. I've lived with three dogs from puppy to elder. It's not replacing them, it's necessarily getting a new dog. You remember the years you've had with your pets, you know you gave them the best life they could have possibly had. If you made them happy, then you succeeded in making their life good. It's making another life happy and good, filled with amazing things.
Ya it's not that you are replacing the animal that died but more like you are moving on and when a new puppy or kitten comes into your life its surprisingly easy to start up again. Animals are awesome that way.
If you love sharks, you should totally get some. Don't think of them as a replacement, they're not a replacement, they're a new, totally individual part of the family. Same for your dog. You can never replace her, but it's good to have company.
I had 2 dogs. I got them both about the same time. When one of them past away, I would hear, "It's just a dog, you can get another one, it's not like a family member died!" Some of those comments pissed me off. Each person has their own connection to animals. I had such a bond with them since they got me through some pretty tough times in life. It's been 4 years since my first dog passed away and 2 years after my second dog passed. People have asked when I'm getting another one, and I always tell them I'm not ready.
One of each variation of discus would be awesome! And as for sentimental and loyal to your pets, it's only normal feel for all life forms as they're all irreplaceable! Every time I've gotten a new pet after the death of an old one of the same type, I dont acknowledge it as "replacing" but more so of a "carrying on the legacy" of a late loved one. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯👌🏽🐠🐟🐠🐟🐡🦈🦀🐙🐚

As far as the dog thing and replacing them. Get another one before you have to go through their passing. They'll appreciate pack life and you won't be 'replacing' your dog. You'll be adding to the family. I'd never be without a dog and they're happier surrounded by others so it's a no brainer for me
What about putting gravel style tiles in the Exodon's, So it dose look so bare. Yes mix the discus mutations up.
What about a pair of Lungfish to go in with the Arowana's and Ray's, something abit different.

There are tons of dogs and sharks out there that will live and die whether you get them or not. They can't do too much better than you, but they could do a lot worse. Another perspective to consider.

They call the hobby fish keeping for a reason. I think you should try again with the sharks, We learn from experience. If you're loyal and dedicated to the hobby then no one takes offense. Nothing really ever replaces your memories of a cherished pet, you just have more memories to look back on. It's always hard to lose family be they two legs or four. We grow as individuals in our experiences in life. Don't limit yours because of fear or regret. Life is too short. Enjoy it. "Life is suffering and it's our responsibility to make it better and give it meaning."

We had that heat wave in the UK, too. It was a nightmare. I too was refilling my tank with cold tap water that was coming out at 26 degrees C, Straight from the cold water tap!
I definitely support you getting more shark eggs. You (and we) were so excited watching them develop and hatch and you were hit by an unfortunate disaster that was entirely out of your control. In no way would you be simply replacing them. When you're ready, of course.
On the pet question, the best thing you can do is give another animal a wonderful home. You don't have to move on emotionally to love another creature. you don't adopt another pet to fill a void you adopt another pet because you enjoy their company

Also on the 'get new sharks' maybe try looking at them, rather than replacing, more look at it towards adding a new addition.
I never replaced my first dog - she was a caring motherly family dog who belonged to no single person, but I did get a second, she was sassy, confident and fiercely loyal to those she deemed worthy, whereas our current dog is smart, alert and forever looking to please - but only from a few people who he knows will reciprocate. All have lived with us from 8-12 weeks till their deaths at 16/14/not anytime soon. I'm attached to them and in no way could I ever replace them, but also in a way I never will, doesn't mean I'll never get another dog tho! (that also relates to Honey)
None replaced the other, in any other way than filling a hole in the family - and it was a hole.
So rather than replacing the sharks, just get more? New breed or new types, or the same breeds, but know they aren't the same? No other flowerhorn is going to be Frank, doesn't mean you don't get Francine :)
(hopefully this helps convince into getting more sharks, I am willingly biased)
Mix up the discus!
As soon as you said the dog was like your daughter I laughed. My husband and I have two furkids and one human toddler. The boy dog I've had forever and my hubby "adopted" as his own, but the second month we were together we adopted a puppy from the animal shelter and we both refer to the dogs as our son/daughter. lol. Just earlier, Luna (girl pup) was doing something weird, so I called to my husband, "Go look at your daughter, she's being weird on the couch." hahaha!
The trick o dogs get a new puppy before the older dog dies so the pup picks up some of the older dogs habits plus a puppy is alway fun!
That's what I've done recently. My older dog got a new lease of life and he's so much more invigorated with a youngster about to play with. I'm so happy to have the two of the now and both taking on traits of each other.
I'd love to see multiple types of discus to learn more about the different strains. What's out there, because I'm looking for something really cool
I have had my dog for 11 years and got a puppy this year because I can see she's slowly slowing down and getting old not because she bores me but because I know I could never replace her so I chose to add another pet before it became replacement I love her to death so maybe don't replace her but rather add a new family member now before you have to replace she's my first dog and only dog and I've always loved her she's happy and I know it's going to be hard for me to move on but I think that's the point you are not supposed to move on but learn to live with it ❤

I totally get not wanting to "replace" a pet... After my first dog passed it became very difficult to go home... And my brother and I kind of accidently came across the sweetest puppy ever so we rescued her. When my cat died it took me several years to get another... They are not replacements in my eyes they are just more "children" I currently have two cats that own me and 3 kittens that I'm fostering... I can't imagine life without my furr children

Iv'e had 7 dogs, which includes the 2 I have right now. I always like to have 2 dogs so that when I go to work they are not alone. When one dies I wait a while before getting a new dog. You never forget your dogs. I have kept all of their collars.

Well you can not replace a dog, after sometime passes it is OK to move on. I had My Zoe for 14 years since she was 6 weeks old. Took me a year after she passed to start looking for a new dog.

Honestly Joey the sharks dying really sucked. I’m sure it hurt a lot. It was awful and it couldn’t be helped. If you never replace them it would be understandable.

I think when hunny does finally go, it is best to wait a little while but then get a new dog for part of the family, hunny would want you to love and give a home to another dog in need in her memory :)

Here in the Netherlands, it's not so easy to find good information..
as much as i love all your big experiments and constant changes, i love seeing your entire gallery just fall into place. been watching you for years and your gallery is finally looking complete. other than the usual cleaning and feeding of course, your gallery is now like a museum. now we can just get in, relax, and enjoy the awesome view.

I don't think of it as replacing. But trying again with a result of better success. There's always a mourning period with that being said. If i lost my pitbull I'd get another at some point. You did get more Rays and Awawana when you lost them. I'd wait until you decide what those last 2 tanks are gonna be. Those sharks are so hard to get to eat and even if they do at first doesn't promise they'll keep on eating Saltwater fish are known to starve them selves to death.
