    Similar design at our church but the only difference is we have small round tables instead of pews or chairs. We have two armed plain clothes greeters at the door and several other armed church safety team members in all four corners of the sanctuary. We greet all new visitors and introduce ourselves by name and have another member escort them to our "cafe" for a free coffee and bagel to enjoy at the table. We have a general distress/incident word to yell that lets all members know to get down immediately. We practice shooting and also pray together as a team. All doors are locked and manned after service has started and any latecomers are greeted and discreetly scrutinized.

    Thank you for this video.
    We had a training workshop at church. What this video highlights is something that we tend to forget - how quickly the whole scenario played out! Very good tips and reminders - as a defender you are responsible for every round that leaves the muzzle.

    Clearly every church should have a valid security plan in place with hopefully more than one person to engage the threat. Hopefully they practice on a regular basis, hopefully they communicate while securing. I hope a lot of people get an opportunity to view the video and take some valuable knowledge away from it that may save someone you know someday. Same goes for schools or location's where people gather. Calling for more gun laws will not address the evil in man. You can not believe since a law was passed their is no need to worry, evil with intent will strike and will not care what laws they may be breaking. Good job USCCA - very happy I am a member of a proactive organization.

      I do church security. I never carry anything less than my 19 and a spare mag. Both mags have plus 2 base plate, and I have one in the pipe. So altogether, 35 rounds. Not to mention my 38 spec revolver, which holds 5 more rounds.

    My daughter asked me a about a month back or so why I was carrying in church (I hate that it's come to doing this). Situations like this... Our sanctuary is no longer as safe as once was...and God gives you a brain along with your faith to do what is needed to save lives. Always sitting in a corner, at an angle for best view and quick access to one of a few exits.

      I’m pretty sure there’s people in my church that carry as well. We have a few police officers that attend our church and though they are off duty then, they are usually armed. Especially now days. Hate to say it but I hope they are armed. As much as I don’t want to see anyone killed, bad people or not, it’s important to keep people safe especially kids and families.

    I have to say that this was a very realistic scenario. Your church layout is eerily similar to our own. I can immediately see where my own prejudices played into my personal analysis of the scenario. I immediately centered my attention on the fellow with the heavy coat. When I should have also noted the umbrella on a sunny day.
    This scenario clearly demonstrates a critical need for similarly intense training for any team that volunteers for such a sacrificial endeavor as protecting the flock from evildoers.
    God bless you and please continue with this good work.

    As a retired police officer and deadly force instructor, I wish we would identify assailants as "active Killers" instead of this misnomer of "Active Shooters". I have learned that teaching "Active Shooter" instead of "Active Killer" tends to focus people on the illegal use of firearms only. And they are not taught that killing comes in many forms such as bladed weapons, fire, chemicals combined with other tools like duct tape, chains and locks, buckets or cans, etc. And as an instructor, I see that "Tom" engages with his sidearm like most of us when under duress (even if its only training duress), we shoot while looking over the gun instead of through the back of the handgun. Another example of why the failure of teaching the fight is dangerous. Instead, instructors teaching shooting, not fighting which creates a false sense of skills. Nice video. I learned a lot in a book titled, "Beyond the Muzzle: The Firearms instructors and Shooters Development Guide". A simple search should find it. Wow!

    I hope part of the training is instilling the OODA loop. Observe, Orient, Decide, Act. E.g. Gunshot goes off, look in the direction of the gunshot, decide to either take cover if in an exposed position or to draw if in a offensible position, perform the action related to the decision. Repeat until the threat is neutralized. I don't have any military experience, but playing realistic military tank video games has taught me that the OODA loops will allow you to survive the encounter, or to deal as much damage as possible in a situation where survival is impossible so the others can finish the threat.

    So in that specific scenario I saw only two options:
    1) Announce gun and then play as part of the innocent just trying to find cover then draw and shoot as soon as he; looks away, points his gun elsewhere, attempts to reload or is distracted.
    2) Announce gun and then kneel behind the chairs to conceal most of my body (giving the shooter less of a target to see) and attempting to shoot him down before too many rounds are fired. The only problem with that is the potential for someone to jump up in the way; though with the announcement of a gun and shooting taking place, I assume most people would be down low increasing this option to be the potentially better one.
    The "flaw" in both, is one he gets to shoot many rounds before I stop him and the other he is a certain distance away with potential people in between making hitting him hard; but at least I will most likely have drawn his fire and/or caused that shooter (because most don't expect someone to shoot back) to drop out of fear of getting hit.
    In option 2 if the shooter drops out of fear of getting hit, then the best option would be to continue shooting (slowly) to keep him down while moving in closer to make the rounds connect.
    Given, this is all in hind site and not in the moment; so who knows what I would actually do, I like to think with the practice I attempt that I would be at least partially prepared to act as fast as possible.

      No unfortunately not, but I am going to watch it when I get an opportunity for education purposes. And thanks, I have not actually had nearly as much training as I would like to have had. But being in cyber security and risk management as my job. Assessing risk and making a determination based on that is part of the job. So I think on these things a whole lot and have developed a small hobby out of looking at my surrounding options in case an active shooter were to do one of 3 to 5 things depending on where I am at.
      But training based on those risks and security measures, honestly I have had little training; but I have gone over with my family what to do in case of a shooter at home and lots of thought processes on what and how I would do in the moment. I am however part of our church security team. During each service one person is an active security and passive security. And we have gone over several times what the active and passive security member would/will do if an active shooter where to attack. So i have that much training, along with some draw and fire practicing; but am always looking for more training and practice for me and my family. We would love to go thru these training exercises and scenarios for education purposes more often.

    I have one issue with your training. . .I am working with a church security team and in my estimation there would be absolutely NO umbrellas allowed into the sanctuary. Granted there would be other methods for some "wacko" to bring weapons into the scene but bringing extraneous items would be one way to stop some of what could happen. As far as . . . I don't understand, I can't believe and oh my what is happening are true to the word. Chaos is something to always look for be vigilant, be observant. Fantastic video series. You are SPOT ON about having "greeters" AKA 'screeners' in the parking lot. They also need communication back to the ushers/security team in case there's an emergency and the doors need to be shut (and secured). Stop the problem before it gets to the large group of helpless people inside the building.
    But- my first thought about the positions of the 3-man team was CROSSFIRE. Looks like a big chance of friendly fire. Would it be better to have the 3 start out loser together on the same side of the room, and then spread out from there and move and shoot as needed?
    It seems a shame it's come to this, but it's far better to be proactive and have this information out there and available to everyone. And for that I thank you.

      That is definitely something to consider, Against the Modern World, we are responsible for every round that goes down range.
      The idea of having a spread out team is to help build layered security. By having them positioned this way, the security officer that is closest to the threat can engage while the others can either help cover the distance to assist or direct the congregation on where to go.

    Valuable training opportunity, very realistic…Nice job Kevin!
    Your security officer needs to work on improving the grip on his pistol. Also needs to learn to do reloads higher up in his work space. This would allow him to keep his eyes on the threat while reloading his weapon. Very important to never lose visual contact with the threat, if at all possible, once it has been established.
    It’s become apparent to me over the years that many police officers from around the country would benefit greatly from more weapons training. But as many departments are under extreme budget constraints, the officers must take it upon themselves to seek it out. Train would also teach your security personnel to get of the “X” while doing his reload. If not shooting, he should have been moving towards cover or possibly closing distance to the threat

    Love watching this video. Job well done. I think in my humble opinion is that we need to size the weapon for the situation. The church looks large and being only one protection officer on duty the firearms I would have elected to use that day would be either a AR pistol with butt plate so I can engage with better stability. If the AR pistol wasn’t an option I would switch to a 5 inch pistol either the XD 9 tactical or the Glock 17. These two pistols are heavier to allow for better stability as I close into the shooter. The 5 inch barrel will deliver a more stabilized bullet for a longer distance shot. Another thing to consider are quick sights or red dots so that both eyes can remain open allowing you to see more and of course a zero in red dot will give you a higher chance to stop the shooter. A head shot maybe warranted if the shooter has body armor. I also notice the protection officer stored his ammo in his pocket. This delayed reload time. We know why you are their so carry magazine pouches that allows for you to reload. I assume the protection officer didn’t have body armor on which may have caused him to retreat and cover vs closing the distance. Sadly in personal protection you want the shooter to focus on you to protect others. This is why I say wear level 3+ light weight AR steel. By getting the shooters attention you allow others to continue to live.

    • @USCCAOfficial
      @USCCAOfficial  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael, typically the conversations we are having with church security teams is that their congregations are uncomfortable with the idea of seeing the firearms even if it was on the security officer. In this scenario, we wanted to let the officer use something very similar to what he carries on a daily basis so he gets the most out of this training.

    • @nursemike7399
      @nursemike7399 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      USCCA I understand this is why as protection officer should be wearing a sports jacket to allow for multiple magazine pouches and concealment of an ar pistol. I get that they are uncomfortable but being shot or killed is no joy. The protection officer doesn’t have to look like the police in daily duty gear. Many manufacturers design such weapons to be carried concealed on oneself. The body armor I use is designed for me to wear a suit or sport jacket. We know a 3 inch barrel is design for more up close. The 4 inch is just a basic contender for that shot as one closing in on the shooter while the 5 inch is a better option. I understand what your all are doing and I support it; just sharing!

      @@331drummer, that is definitely something to consider. You have to be careful with lasers because they do fail or run out of battery. I would suggest if you are going to carry a laser, also making sure you are training with your factory sights.

    • @davedsmer
      @davedsmer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest going to a local IDPA match or similar pistol competition to test yourself and have a lot of fun doing it. Try a stage with your laser then try a stage without. See what works better for you. Searching for your dot rather than just aiming and shooting actually reduces your time to hit. If you can't hit without the laser you need more practice. Certain low light situations where you can't see your sights well might lend itself to having a laser but that is the only scenario which I can think of that might be a benefit and tell me you need better sights. I only use a laser as a training aid for newer shooters to show them how they are pulling their pistol off target before the trigger break so they can try to get better trigger control as they try to maintain that dot level during the whole trigger pull.

    I’m shocked church security teams did not learn more from the west freeway church incident. They lost two people despite preparation and awareness, yet showed how critical preparedness is to minimize damage. (1) they trained as a team and had a team in place (2) they have communications and used intelligence, having identified the threat by the time he entered and sharing that info across team. (3) having identified shooter as a potential threat they preposition to have eyes on and be within shooting range. Could have been a bit better if they’d had a strong young man immediately adjacent with ability to tackle when shooter started to pull out his shotgun - but it looked like congregation is primarily elderly. (4) jack put a single round into perps head, having to be super careful of intervening innocents.
    Where their defense shown was in depth of preparation. Had Jack not been there, not been in position, or simply missed, there were numerous other defenders closing range with pistols drawn.

    First , if you are the lone security officer, have at least two spare magazines, and if carrying a Glock , have a smaller backup version that will also take the larger gun mags. Have at least two officers and if possible vetted experienced shooters , who run drills with you. The key to survival is well placed force multipliers, who can fight back and get unarmed people out of harms way. If alone, instead of being up front and having to engage the shooter across the longer distance with people in between. Take a rear corner with no window or door behind you , and keep seats in front of you empty. As soon as he deploys his weapon, shoot him before he knows you are on his flank..would also keep minimum of two spare mags on belt

    Grammar check... shouldn't it be "Shooter Opens Fire" instead of "Shooter Open Fires"?

    (If not already) I feel like if someone decides to shoot up at place of worship it shlukd be an automatic death penalty no matter wat state or area u are in case a that is just morally wrong on so many levels to do that while in a place of god/peace and
