  • What a crazy discovery! Our unused 30 foot tall chimney was clogged with 7+ years of bird nests and an unbelievable amount of skulls, skeletons and feathers. We found some blue-colored feathers and guessed the bird were blue jays who nested at the top.
After each season, the nests might have become so heavy that they sunk to the bottom of the chimney, taking whatever baby birds were still inside with it.
Come Springtime, we will definitely climb up to the top of the chimney and put up a screen around the vent to stop more birds from building nests.
All in all a fun, rewarding, easy, AND quick DIY project, completed using a $25 chimney sweep tool purchased on Amazon.

We had an HVAC technician come out to service our oil-burning furnace the other day. The furnace started up briefly but then the fire went out. The technician wasn't able to get it lit again so he assumed that something must be clogging the duct, the chimney that feeds oxygen into the furnace to keep the fire alive.
He suggested we hire a chimney sweep company, but we weren't sure how long the turnaround time would be before they could come out to the farm and fix it. So, Jordan found a cheap flexible chimney sweep device on Amazon that was 35 feet long. It came in the mail a few days later and her and her mom put it together within minutes.
After taking off the bottom cap of the chimney, they found it was clogged right at the entrance with a stack of bird nests. Jordan reached up an pulled them out by hand, then discovered that it was FULL of bones!
Jordan is a big fan of collecting bones, fossils, and rocks and already has an ongoing bone collection of animal skulls, vertebrae, and knuckle bones. She got so excited to see this many bones all in one place, and put them in a glass jar for a later project making terrariums with little artifacts and archaeological finds. The experience pulling apart the bird nests to search for skulls reminded her of dissecting owl pellets when she was young.
After confirming the bird nests were out, they pushed the chimney sweep device up the duct pipe all the way to the top. A drill attached to the ground end helped turn the sweep, cleaning out any extra debris.
I was absolutely shocked at first when Jordan and her mom pulled the nests out of the chimney, but felt lucky that I had this experience and captured the whole thing on my IPhone 14 Pro Max.
Listen in to the video to hear more fun facts about these and other neat memories.
