La gente polaca sois bastante buenos aprendiendo español y con el tiempo os desaparece el acento extranjero casi totalmente.

I find that when asking them to speak more slowly, they often reply back at the same speed, but louder. It generally only works when you are speaking with someone who is going through, or has gone through the long process of acquiring a language. I have also found out that people in generally are more helpful and patient if you are female, with guys often getting the rough end of the stick. This isn't just in Spain but in society in general. A recent example was when I was trying to buy a bus ticket in Spain and it was confusing with multiple bus names and operators, and the ticket information did not match with the bus companies and so on. When I asked at the ticket information desk the woman behind the counter had about 5 seconds of patience before slamming the counter down, which left me none the wiser, and a few minutes later a young female passenger asked the same queston, and the same worker was really helpful, friendly and patient with her. I also experience the same thing in some restuarants, where waiters often have more patience with female customers. I take note and don't return to these places as there is no need for rudeness or discrimination.

Alabama guy here. I recently enjoyed a Spanish conversation with a girl from San Diego. She said that my southern accent is "beautiful" and I should not try to lose it when speaking Spanish.
Don't listen to the girl. You'll be appreciated more when you reduce the accent as much as you can..If you end up 100% accent free and speak it like a Mexican you'll be a rockstar to any Mexican you interact with.
What she says makes sense, but at the same time I like how you put “always” in the title. Many have achieved that goal of being consistently mistaken for a native and people continue to reach that point. I just think it’s not super important to stress over it throughout the entire process. Once someone has reached a certain point in their journey where they’re comfortable with their level and navigating the language, then maybe, if they desire, they can move onto refinements. I don’t think it’s a bad goal to have to want to sound native, just don’t get hung up on details😊

Una cosa interesante es al tener mi hijo (que tiene menos de dos años) he cambiado mi punto de vista sobre el aprendizaje de un idioma. Es algo fascinante ver como aprende un bebé hablar, es algo natural porque el idioma le rodea, y los bebés no intentan de aprender, solo aprenden! Mi esposo y yo ya hemos leído más que 2 mil libros a mi hijo y se nota en cómo habla porque ya puede comunicar súper bien por su edad, leemos mucho, cantamos canciones, hablamos con el todo el día y el habla súper súper bien. Puede comunicar casi cualquier cosa. Aunque llevo muchos años aprendiendo el español, ya veo que rodearme con el idioma me va a ayudar mucho más que haciendo ejercicios como hacía antes. Ya pienso en el aprendizaje como si fuera una bebé jajaja

Regarding the translation, "mentalize oneself" doesn't make much sense in English. 😊 I assume she meant "adopt the mindset" or "mentally prepare oneself" or something like that? Where did she learn Spanish? I missed that. Sounds like Spain, with the sort of pinched vocal timbre you hear in parts of Spain, and she has that word-final thing where /s/ sort of turns into /ʃ/. But some of the "c" are /s/ where rhey would be an interdental fricative /θ/ the Castellano I've heard.
I've never worried about sounding like a native. My goal is to be understood. I have friends who have spoken fluent English for years but still have a Mexican accent. It's just not a big deal to them or to me.

Por ejemplo, costará más encontrar gente así en ciudades más grandes (como Madrid donde vivo yo 😅) porque habitualmente tiene más prisa por el estilo de vida, y además a menudo se habla inglés (por lo menos más que la gente de las zonas más del campo.) A ellos les vendría mejor hablar en inglés si su nivel de inglés es mejor que tu nivel de español o sino tienen ganas de hablarlo contigo.

I always fool myself then...Everytime I read something in Spanish I always think that I understand because when something is written down I get time to process the information, I was watching soccer on Saturday, Barcelona vs Las Palmers, I understood much of what the commentators were saying, I am watching this video, I understand much of it, is it because of the subtitles. Why do I understand more than I should???
Su español es muy muy bueno, pero sí se le nota que no es hablante nativa del español. Por ejemplo, la E la pronuncia muchas veces abierta, mientas que en español es cerrada, y muchas veces no hace encadenamientos entre vocales como lo hacen los nativos. Por ejemplo, “la ardilla” se pronuncia “lardilla” y no “la|||ardilla”.
