- Danny Joe Brown is back with the band and the "No Guts No Glory" album has just been released. Rich Langlois does interview for the "Backstreet" TV show which aired on broadcast and cable tv in the 1980's.

Danny Joe Brown was arguably one of the greatest Southern rock/ rock voices ever. Actually he is the best.
Period.
Southern Rock? Yes, the best voice no doubt ! For the northern spectrum ? Bob Seger is my pick.
I cannot thank Molly Hatchet enough for rocking my ass off growing up in the 70's and 80's.

I saw Hatchet 4 times in the late 70's and 1980 . They could melt the stage live . They were certainly not a studio trick .

Nobody in my NorCal life really understood my appreciation of Southern Rock in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I bought a Molly Hatchet trucker hat in 1978 . It Was a piece of shit , but it was still a relic from a band nobody else around me cared about, and I was glad to have it.

I always liked him because he reminds me of my family. They're from Tennessee, Texas, and the Carolinas.
Gator Country was a personal favorite of mine by Molly Hatchet.

R.I.P. all of these guys, except for John Galvin (yet). You can tell that Danny Joe Brown was just such a good-hearted guy. They really all were, I think. Legendary band.

Dave is high as a kite in this his face shows it! Funny him puttin Jimmy Farrar down for his vocals on BEATIN THE ODDS are awesome. I love DJB but he left to go solo and Jimmy did a damn good job.
I discovered MH with JF as the lead singer, and thought he was great, so, that will always be my favorite version of the band.

They played a local venue here in Upstate NY one night that we got hit with a heavy blizzard. DJB and the gang came onstage and told a packed crowd "Ya know, I was thinking there wouldn't be anybody here tonight, but seeing you now, it occurs to me; ya'll live in this S#%t!!!" Then they rocked the place as they always did wherever they appeared! They played many shows around our area over the years. Sad to see all the original members have passed on. Hope they've re-grouped and will be rocking the joint when my turn comes to join them.
Being in the U.S. Army in 1980, I was a looong way from home and this felt like home when they took the stage in Lorelai, Germany that summer afternoon, long ago.
That's awesome man, I am from Panama City as well and love Molly Hatchet it's crazy that you had seen them in Germany.
Danny Joe Brown is the only lead singer. Molly Hatchet is Danny, David, Duane, Banner and Bruce. Not Bobby.

1982 as a marine my company had duty in N.C. doing security for these navy ships that would come inland,every 6 months, I had 4 days off went to this bar,they told us that they were going to have alive band play.....NO SHIT it was MOLLY HATCHET .2 nites later at the UNC auditorium....w/ blackfoot. in '06 to '09 in AFGHAISTAN before each combat missions I would play Flirtin' w/ Disaster.. NO BALLS.. NO GLORY... SGT H

Semper Fi MFer! 1983 I was a squid stationed at Norfolk, Virginia USA, on ship liberty, cruising in my car, when the disk jockey on the radio announced LIVE that Molly Hatchet would be playing at a Hampton, Virginia bike track that night. I only had to pay $20 cash at the gate, but what a wild show. Bikers in black leather climbing the 40 foot tall chain link fence around the stage with Danny singing and swigging off a half gallon bottle og Jack. About 12 of us waited backstage for Danny to come out of his parked tour bus until 3AM. When he did come out and shake my hand and sign titties with a felt marker, I was already tripping. Then Danny just slung his arm over my shoulder and said "let's all hold hands and pray" Danny prayed "Dear God, please protect us from the drunk drivers on the road tonight"

Molly Hatchet was one of the best live acts I´ve erver saw.
They opened for Sammy Hagar back in 83 at Kalamazoo wings stadium .my first concert ever and only concert I went too my ears were ringing for two days my seat was row 11 right of the side of the stage .it was awesome .
I Loved this band and I was at Danny’s return Concert at West Palm Beach Motor Speedway ...saw them 14 times and I along with my good friend went to Danny’s funeral in Davie M,Florida 🌹
Danny Joe Brown his voice was just so unique. The energy vibes. I watch some of Hatchetts often. Love to watch the videos and It always gets me pumped up. Im going through some long term physical therapy due to spinal accident and surgery. So fighting depression is never ending the fact that I have always been a wide open gotta go type if guy makes it even more challenging so I have several favorites f
different bands that helps. im sure you older folk like me know about Mother's Finest. Some may like em. Some not but between Moses Mo. Joyce (Baby Jean) and Doc. They just kick some Funky Ass. INMO. I lived in Jacksonville in 1983 and saw them at the Jacksonville Coliseum. When Dave said "it's snowing here in Jacksonville", that was a reference to cocaine which was big at that time. I heard that many times.

I sure miss these guys and Molly hatchet one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time the south really produced hall of fame rock bands back in the seventies and eighties it is so sad that almost all of these extremely talented guys have passed on

I knew Danny joe Brown. He was a great guy. One night after his show we wound up jamming and he was telling stories live at a radio station in Jacksonville NC. They played clips from it for months.
That's pretty cool! I lived in Jacksonville from '65 - '70. I'll bet the station was either WXQR fm or WJNC am. My Dad was stationed at Lejeune, and I went to school at this great old school, White Oak, right by Maysville, NC. Loved growing up there...nice to meet you, Curtis...
@@neosturm5288 I'm thinking wqxr it's on the main road I believe it's been so long ago then I had a good time in the Marine Corps and after I had a pretty good career in music I opened up for Billy and country music stars some of my originals are on my TH-cam site if you want to hear them I wrote them saying and played the total on them. I wish I could go back to 1982 even for fucking 15 minutes it was such a good time and I really enjoyed being in the Marine Corps hanging out with your buddies all day nothing wrong with that cutting up all the time.
@@neosturm5288 You too my brother. I played with a fantastic guitarist in Jacksonville his name is Rick Lambert they had a band called Rein something like that. They played at the Thunderbird and man did they kick ass and then the drummer from there and myself went with my buddy to Dallas and played the music circuit there the drummer's name was Mark Mark midkiff. A great person and one fucking hell of a drummer. Rick Lambert was amazing he could play anything he was simply amazing he still plays and he's in Louisiana or something. Great times.
@@neosturm5288 we would go up to the tar heel Opry House and sit in with the super grit cowboy band and they were something else seriously kick ass country up in your face. They had a t-shirt they sold it said if you can't hang drag your country ass on home.

A lot of these guys were from Jacksonville Florida....I was down in Jacksonville in the mid 80's and we were playing sandlot football about 5 of us...up came 5 long haired country boys asking if they could play ball with us....we said sure....they had a great time and we had a good time.....we talked to them a little while and told them we lived at the apartments right across the street....2 hours later we received 5 tickets to the Johnny Van Zant concert....the long haired boys were the band
Bill Tidy it absolutely works or worked like that back then. I shit you not, my brother and I ran into one of these long hair country boys in J-ville, standing in front of country store off us-1 . started talking to him bout music next thing you know we were throwing the football at a schoolyard. Dude was drummer for Danny J B's solo album and a few of his friends joined us. Fricken unreal cool time.

Duane Roland was the best musician in this band. He did the best guitar work...lead break on Dreams, second lead on Flirtin'. etc. The guy kicked ass! R.I.P.

Really? Saw Hatchet in a bar years ago. They were doing sound checks. I was standing about 10 feet from Hlubek. I said "Get it Dave." He looked at me and said, "I need whiskey first."

BB Borden is outstanding on drums...he played in the funk rock band Mothers Finest outta Georgia!!!
I saw Molly Hatchet way back in the day with DJB. I was 14, and I remember going ape s**t when I learned they would be doing two shows at the Fair. Me and a buddy that I played in a band with rode there with my older brother and his friend. We scored some good weed, and by the end of the 1st show we had to get something to drink and walk it off a bit. By that time, we were back for the 2nd show. It was a blast! Two hard rockin' Molly Hatchet shows for the price of Fair admission. The world sure has changed.
Personally I liked the work Jimmy Farrar did with Hatchet. Beatin' the Odds was a great album. Of course there's nothing like the original.
pedraw Jimmy was outstanding, he just wasn't pretty to look at. Danny had alot of stage presence and charisma.
Jimmy was a very talented singer.
Dave hlubek's the man. Great guitarist and songwriter....when he left that was end of hatchet
I ran into that guitarist in Thailand recently. I had no idea this band existed until I talked him.

Molly F**kin' Hatchet! Besides one Lynyrd Skynyrd, they are theeeeee best southern rock bands of ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL time! I saw them with and without Danny, and they were better with Danny, but good without him, too. Dwayne Hulbeck has to be one of the best along with Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Duane Allman and the rest. God rest their souls (except for Gary)......for God is the only one who could get all those guitars all on the same page! And LORD, I WANT TO HEAR THAT JAM!

they were all great.
Billy ("BB") Bordan was the drummer for Mother's Finest for years; since his stint with Hatchet, he's also played with The Marshall Tucker Band. Good drummer. Duane and Danny from this version of Hatchet are no longer with us. Last I knew, Dave Hlubek was the only original Hatchet member still with the group, but John Galvin has been with them since "The Deed Is Done"and the previous tour, and is still there today..
Just FYI, it's "Barry" Borden. He was also with the Outlaws for some time, is on the Diablo Canyon album. Still playing drums with Marshall Tucker.

Hatchet wasn't the same with the reemergence of Danny Joe Brown. I understand he had some ailments and the band was in decline. Jimmy Farrar did a very good job carrying the legacy onward but in an effort to spike sales Danny came back. The decline could not be stopped but there is some good material around from the late 70's early 80's Hatchet that still sounds good. I saw Jimmy with Hatchet in 1980 and they kicked butt. Great show in Oklahoma City that I'll never forget and Jimmy was all over the stage. I never forgot the show.

1st 2 albums were the best. They had the perfect chemistry on the Flirtin with disaster album. Too bad DJB left shortly after it. They lost their momentum/direction after that. They should have at least stuck to the hard driving boogie woogie which put them on the map. Sadly they took some bad direction and tried to be a pop rock band. That's why Banner Thomas left. He knew MH fucked up.

My mom was dave Hlubeks son Kyles teacher at university Christian School in 1984 when Kyle was in the 3rd grade.She said Dave came to her class one day and says he had the long hair and beard like he does here.

I saw Hatchet shortly after Danny left. It was so soon after he left, everyone was still expecting him to be in the band, myself and friends included. Took less than a minute for everyone to realize that dude singing is not Danny. Jimmy was a good singer and front man and like Dave said, had he been in the band from the beginning, they more than likely wouldve been received well. Anyway, at the show i was at... besides some boos, Jimmy got hit in the head with a roll of toilet paper.
I was working in Central Arkansas in the mid 90s, and driving home one Wednesday evening listening to a Little Rock radio station was shocked to hear an announcement that Molly Hatchet would be playing that night at a small roadhouse in Morrilton. Couldn't believe it. The first two albums were still among my top five, and had seen one phenomenal show in Upstate NY in the mid 80s. But thought they were long gone. And they'd be at my favorite roadhouse 10 miles from my house???? It had to have been between two tour stops and someone talked them into it.
They didn't come on until 11:30. Small stage almost collapsing under the weight of all of those amps. And an older and in poor health DJB was the only original member present. He remained in a chair (it MAY have been a wheelchair) for the entire show.
But my God it was still very much a show. The row of empty shot glasses on the amps were evidence that they were going to have a good time. They were loose and tore through one long set without a hitch. Of course I missed the three guitar attack, but the two they had were better than any cover band trying to pull off Hatchet.
But center stage, DJB still had it. Still projected something good. You could tell he was struggling, but the way he connected with those of us right in front of the small stage--he was the real deal. He loved us for being there, and we loved him for all he meant to us during those endless beer and weed parties in our teens. As they took him off, I grabbed the notebook paper taped to the monitor that had the set list on it written in sharpie. He just smiled and gave me the thumbs up.
Humble, gracious, and gifted to the very end. RIP Danny
What albums did banner thomas play bass on?
Jimmy Farrar was a great vocalist that was every bit as good as DJB. He was just entirely different. Fans loved DJB and didn't accept Jimmy. Much the same as David Byron and John Lawton of Uriah Heep.

"Molly Hatchet took its name from a prostitute who allegedly mutilated and decapitated her clients. " That was always the story I remember from the early days, except that the "lady" in question was called "Hatchet Molly" and the band flipped it.
