      As a Brit who knows little about the geography of the Balkans and most of Eastern Europe, you two still caused me immense physical and mental pain. Who, in their right mind, thinks the Netherlands is a fucking island.
      I get you're Americans who (as a rule, it seems) seem to be unaware of the rest of the world. But Jesus, Mary, mother of God.
      I'm sure you're both lovely people but your knowledge of geography is aneurism inducing.

Even if some Europeans don’t know where all states are we would still know the location of many asian, african and south american countries and so on. @@PlayerBRUV yes sure i get that. Its the same with russia but still. In Europe the US is just seen as one country. Also economically. At work we don’t talk about the states when talking about customers from the us. Its just „the usa“. And that’s why you can’t expect Europeans to know every state just like you should expect someone to have basic knowledge in geography. But with that i dont wanna say that americans are dumb. I know people from my country who don’t even know our borders.

      I am almost certain that he did a bit of cram studying beforehand for the states. The reasoning is that he knew where some of the most random states were while other more random ones he had no clue. If he knew nothing about where Montana was, he wouldn't have found it with the description "it's one of the square ones". He knew where Ohio and Rhode Island were, but not where New York was. Additionally its relatively unlikely he simply got lucky on the first few, since that is routinely getting odds of around 1in40 or 50. Not to mention that he recognized Kentucky because it was shaped like a chicken leg, but missed Oklahoma which is one of the most visually recognizable states. He almost certainly went through it once in advance, and worked on figuring out ways to remember places he wasn't sure of.
      That said, I am utterly ashamed of my fellow Americans. They had a hard time early on back when they were helping him find the American states (before there was a realization it was a competition), of course they were awful at Europe. I tried the Europe, and my main problems were the Eastern Baltics (I get them confused which is which), the Balkans (to be fair, I think they get themselves confused which is which) and the tiny nonsense countries (I know where Luxembourg is because of history memes, and the Vatican because different history memes, but the rest are confusing).
      Also "Oh, good, Serbia, you should know where that one is." What? She had no clue where Poland, Germany or Denmark were, how would she know where Serbia was, beyond the vague assumption that it's one of the Balkans. That was reason enough for me to believe both sides had studied in advance, which in turn was reason to feel sad that the American side did it so poorly.

    As a Canadian, this makes me realize that we were really just never tought geography outside of Canada in school. Neither states nor Europe. The closest we got was in history class for WW1 (1914) European geography. While I've passively learned enough geography outside of school, in some ways I really do relate to everyone here.
    Edit: spelling

    • @j3rry_k542
      @j3rry_k542 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      What do you even learn about? I mean, Canada is an enormous country but I don't think it justifies ignoring the rest of the world, unless you only get a year to learn geography, which would be generally moronic. But how can you even learn about the history of the world when you lack even basic understanding of it's geography?
      Also, what is your history about and how much time do you spend with it, given that history of Canada begins by the 16-17th century, do you spend years in school discussing some 400 years of "national" history?

    • @artsyaidan
      @artsyaidan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@j3rry_k542 Geography class spent an inordinate amount of time on the different geological regions of Canada- climates, rock types, areas good for farming, etc. As for history, I'm sure in elementary school we covered Canadian history, but by high school (most of what I remember) we solely focused on Europe 1914-1967 (world wars & their lasting effects), with elements of how that effected the formation of Canada.

    • @artsyaidan
      @artsyaidan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@j3rry_k542 So while I'm sure we were taught the basics of international geography (continents) and the founding Canadian history all through primary & elementary school, in high school we had one half-year class for Geography (Canadian) and one half-year class for History (world wars).

      @@j3rry_k542 Honestly, this comment comes off as really rude. Every country specialises in its own history and geography, even yours. As a Swede, we learnt about world geography (I even remember playing Seterra in third grade and getting all African countries faster than anyone in my class lmao), but we obviously focus on Europe and don't really get into North America or specific Asian countries etc. I don't judge other countries for doing it differently. In an ideal world, everyone should learn more about the world, but that's not specific people's fault, moreso their school curriculum's fault.

      @@thespankmyfrank Oh I'm just concerned and confused by the state of their education when it comes to basic knowledge necessary to orient in current, globally interconnected, world. I don't blame the commenter for the state of their education, but I'm stating that something's not right with the education if there's only half a year dedicated to world history and to geography.
      In my country, world geography is discussed for 3 out of the 4 "middle" school years and national history is talked about in conjunction with world history in all of the 4 years of "middle" school. Then, highschools, no matter their expertise, are required to teach another year of history and a year of geography which, in the end, is still too little too late for many. I just don't like the thought that an important western nation on the global scale has less informative education than our poor, boring and unimportant eastern European state.

    Ngl as a European(German) Geography major this pained me so much but at the same time it’s so funny
    You’d think even people from elsewhere would at least kinda know where some of the biggest European countries are, I guess not
    I was literally in tears by the end of this, mainly from laughing

    in American schools they don’t teach us the world map let alone the European map, instead we learn the 50 states map in like fourth or fifth grade and then everybody forgets it two weeks later because it’s just memorizing names and writing them on the correct spot on a paper

    It kinda isn't... But it used to be... (((

    • @fumanchu4785

      You should take this opportunity and make Kaliningrad kind of independent from Russia ... something like a tax heaven or something ...just elect a king and queen ..just for fun and go as a mini kingdom ...for tourism purposes. Because of the German past you have already nice architecture and stuff people can and do visit.
      I mean since Kaliningrad is an exclave surrounded by NATO countries ...RU motherland troops can't come currently and "liberate" you! :D ...should do something with that!
