I love how Americans get all pissy and say "Well you wouldn't know where each state is huh?"
The difference between France and Sweden is much bigger than the difference between Texas and Kentucky. States are not equal to countries with distinct culture and languages
My smug face when i tell them that i do in fact know the states because i learnt them years ago so i can read stephen king and know what he's on about when talking about geography
I do agree with you on the fact that the difference between two European countries and two US states is really big, but US states definitely do have different cultures that range across the entire country. New England’s culture is extremely different than say the south whereas the west coast’s culture is almost foreign to those in the Great Plains.
@@shotyew1435 yeah but the thing is that yanks love to say that the difference between california and new york is bigger than the difference between spain and finland, which is incorrect, ignorant and plain stupid. thats what people hate.
@@shotyew1435 Thing is, states are still internal administrative units, so trying to pretend they're somehow equal to whole countries is silly. Maybe they should ask Europeans instead to find every American COUNTRY (but then they'd probably still do better than some Americans). :P
@@TitanDarwin I’m not saying they are equal, that’s literally what the first sentence in my comment tried to explain. I’m trying to say that the culture and diversity is still a thing. I hate it when people try and say that “oh America has no culture” or “All of Americas culture is the same there’s no diversity”. I try and tell them that there is in fact diversity and a wide range of different cultural experiences. How can you not know where Germany 🇧🇪 is located?
The thing is.. not knowing the states isn’t the same as not knowing european countries. Even if some Europeans don’t know where all states are we would still know the location of many asian, african and south american countries and so on. Its as if you are expected to know about every oblast in russia or every Bundesland in Germany.
Yes i'm agréé with you it's stupid
@@playerbruv9329 yes sure i get that. Its the same with russia but still. In Europe the US is just seen as one country. Also economically. At work we don’t talk about the states when talking about customers from the us. Its just „the usa“. And that’s why you can’t expect Europeans to know every state just like you should expect someone to have basic knowledge in geography. But with that i dont wanna say that americans are dumb. I know people from my country who don’t even know our borders.
Or i mean we should ask americans to know every region from every european country, and even most of us europeans would have a major struggle doing that
Especially since the Americans didn't know the states much better than the Irish guy did

Yup, Balkans are hard to get since until the end of the eighties, it was Yougoslavia. And in the nineties, the borders moved ... a ... lot.

I'm Irish too and I did this exact kind of thing with my American friends, which ofc I absolutely conquered them in
But the REAL best thing was when we did another challenge like this before the Seterra challenge where instead of pinning countries, we got a blank map and labelled them.
Highlights of one American friend in particular include:
-Labelling the Czech Republic correctly but then labelling Slovakia next to it as Czechoslovakia
-Calling North Macedonia Belgium because "it was shaped like a waffle"

As someone who lives on the genuine opposite side of the world from Europe (New Zealand), I am genuinely so surprised whenever I see people living in in-land areas such as Germany or Kansas. Imagine living somewhere where you're surrounded by countries! Fascinating. I'm just surrounded by the ocean. The closest country is Australia, and even that's a 3-hour plane ride away. You guys have to remember 50 different states, and who-knows-how-many countries in Euorpe.
It always amazes me that people from outside the US still learn our states better than a lot of Americans do.
I wonder why. I knew all states at the age of 12 and I'd never think (back then) that Americans don't know their states. But I hope geography gets better there, greetings
Imma be honest, and maybe it’s just the state I live in, I don’t have this problem
Me and a lot of others in my school can name all 50 states on a map at the very least
i mean there’s no real point to when you can look at a map
That’s because, unfortunately, a lot of Americans don’t take geography/history very seriously. Growing up in several different school districts across the country it seems like a pretty “across the board” thing. The fact that some people don’t know the difference between Washington *State* and Washington *D.C* or hell think that D.C is *in* Washington state made me realize that a lot of people are… ignorant by choice to put it nicely.
From my experience it is the opposite

I’m from America and I used to know basically nothing about geography, but then I started learning and now that I know all of North America / 50 states , South America, Europe, and Asia. It pains me to watch people struggling so much to find Germany out of all things.
im american and i know where every european country is, but ill draw a blank if im asked to label the 50 states
Only Africa and Oceania stand in your way of power!
@@Hextor26 unless you're naming every single island and not their region, Oceania is quite simple
@@bean10cabarita96 True I guess, but every time I do a "Countries of the world test" I tend to forget at least 1 country from that region. Usually Nauru, Palau, or Vanuatu.
@@Hextor26 fair enough they are obscure
As a Canadian, this makes me realize that we were really just never tought geography outside of Canada in school. Neither states nor Europe. The closest we got was in history class for WW1 (1914) European geography. While I've passively learned enough geography outside of school, in some ways I really do relate to everyone here.
Edit: spelling
What do you even learn about? I mean, Canada is an enormous country but I don't think it justifies ignoring the rest of the world, unless you only get a year to learn geography, which would be generally moronic. But how can you even learn about the history of the world when you lack even basic understanding of it's geography?
Also, what is your history about and how much time do you spend with it, given that history of Canada begins by the 16-17th century, do you spend years in school discussing some 400 years of "national" history?
@@j3rry_k542 Geography class spent an inordinate amount of time on the different geological regions of Canada- climates, rock types, areas good for farming, etc. As for history, I'm sure in elementary school we covered Canadian history, but by high school (most of what I remember) we solely focused on Europe 1914-1967 (world wars & their lasting effects), with elements of how that effected the formation of Canada.
@@j3rry_k542 So while I'm sure we were taught the basics of international geography (continents) and the founding Canadian history all through primary & elementary school, in high school we had one half-year class for Geography (Canadian) and one half-year class for History (world wars).
@@j3rry_k542 Honestly, this comment comes off as really rude. Every country specialises in its own history and geography, even yours. As a Swede, we learnt about world geography (I even remember playing Seterra in third grade and getting all African countries faster than anyone in my class lmao), but we obviously focus on Europe and don't really get into North America or specific Asian countries etc. I don't judge other countries for doing it differently. In an ideal world, everyone should learn more about the world, but that's not specific people's fault, moreso their school curriculum's fault.
@@thespankmyfrank Oh I'm just concerned and confused by the state of their education when it comes to basic knowledge necessary to orient in current, globally interconnected, world. I don't blame the commenter for the state of their education, but I'm stating that something's not right with the education if there's only half a year dedicated to world history and to geography.
In my country, world geography is discussed for 3 out of the 4 "middle" school years and national history is talked about in conjunction with world history in all of the 4 years of "middle" school. Then, highschools, no matter their expertise, are required to teach another year of history and a year of geography which, in the end, is still too little too late for many. I just don't like the thought that an important western nation on the global scale has less informative education than our poor, boring and unimportant eastern European state.
as an austrian and irish person, i am very offended of them already clicking on austria, but when it comes to that they had a black out-
