Delightful! having just become acquainted with Mr. H through videos of The Great British Baking Show episodes, it's lovely to see him as a creative soul, not just as a stern judge of amateur bakers. You Britons are so fortunate in so many ways to have such a terrific wealth of traditional sweeties! We've nothing like it in the States.

Ahhh such lovely memories but from far, far away from Yorkshire a memory made in the USA. When I was 3 I went to the cinema for the first time to see Oliver! My father bought me assorted licorice and our neighbors were Dutch and they gave me their very strong flavored licorice. I still like them both very much.
When I attended university in London I lived at the International Student's House across from Regent's Park. As I turned the corner I felt just like Oliver Twist coming home. :)

Growing up in a very rural part of America, when I saw 👀 that candy necklace I was elevated, can't believe something this simple from my childhood was on the otherside of the world being enjoyed 😀 too.

I absolutely adore liquorice, and remember chewing on liquorice bark for a halfpenny a stick , oh ! To visit that shop , heaven , hope they are still open and doing well xxxxx
I searched it up put off curiosity they were still open as far as I'm aware and even have a website and sell online however these owners sold it about a year ago or were trying to so they could retire

The kids of today will never know the joys of all these delicious confections. I wish we had something like this over in the us. Where I live there’s not even a good old bakery where you could go to get a cream puff. I sure miss the candy and just a good old donut over here. They have donuts. But these are topped with candy bars and peanut butter. They are so sweet. Oh where did it all go?
There are old fashioned candy shops like this in the U.S. we just don't live where they are. Google them and you'll come up with a few. Bakeries are the same deal.
I just googled "bakeries near me" yesterday and was very disappointed. There is one in my town, but they don't have what I'm looking for. And, I believe a lot of their things (if not all) are not made on site. I'm especially looking for fresh Danish. I think I'll have to make them myself. By the way, Walmart was listed as a "bakery" near me. Now that's just sad.

There was a shop with sweets jars like that right beside where I lived in London sixty years ago. Then I moved to Australia and oh did I miss that sweetshop. It's been replaced by a dentist now of all the irony.

Where in the US are there small family bakers. Lodi, Wisconsin, had a great family bakery but after Grandmother passed way and the economy problems the kids had to close it! They still,,, the Grandkids, have her recipes, I am sure. Please Paul,,, Find those ""Lost bread and baked goods"" from our families!!

I watch the British baking show and never seen a black contestant win, why is that you always find a way to get them off the show before it goes to far however I did see one get to the finals ONE time but didn’t win 🏆
