Lots of people think it's ok to ridicule Fanny Cradock, but it's worth remembering that she pioneered cooking on television post war. It was she who was the prototype for all the TV chefs we have had since. Her eccentricities and bossy nature made her all the more compelling. Above all, each time she cooked she would explain each stage properly and informitively without, I think, being patronising.
3:42 "It's alright Sarah, I can manage" - beautifully passive aggressive. I'm guessing Sarah was strongly prohibited from speaking, even when spoken to. Haha "don't tell that woman next door" such a sign of the times, people barely know their neighbours names these days, never mind sharing trifle recipes. I think its a shame that this sort of cooking show and the likes of Delia Smith are overlooked on TV these days in favour of the dramatised rubbish and bake offs that are trotted out week after week. If people were showed how to cook staple food instead of all the fancy rubbish in microscopic portions that nobody can afford to buy the ingredients for then maybe there wouldn't be an obesity crisis. Mrs Cradock is probably turning in the ground at the state of cookery shows as they exist now.
+nattybking I smiled when I heard that part. That is very true. This show is practical and helpful even for people who live in this age, who have to cook while making ends meet, because not everyone can prepare over-the-top dishes that results in your grocery bill totaling to $500 just for one fancy meal. And yes those cook-off shows on tv are just discouraging and degrading to some of the contestants who foolishly aspire to become the world's next greatest chef. I rarely watch them because I can't stand to see the contestants being criticized and humiliated for not being innovative enough with their dishes. And then I come across home-cooking shows like these where the host encourage the viewers that it is still ok to make meals at home with just 5 ingredients that are cost-effective and time-saving. I remember cycling home from 6th form, through the slush of a cold, wet 1977 winter on my precious Xmas gift - a snazzy American-style Raleigh bicycle. I'd always make sure to pass Mrs Hardigan's bungalow on the way home. There, she would often wave me inside the cosy porch, where she would delicately wipe down my Chopper, leaving it shiny, warm and ready to ride. And there'd always be a portion of something hot and contemporary to keep this young lad from the chills; whether it was Toad in the Hole, Cottage Pie with Cheesy Mash or Mary Berry's Easy Fish Casserole. On a good day I'd also receive a dessert of Upside-Down Tart, a moist slice of Delia Smith's Black Forest Gateau, or Chocolate Brownies depending on the day of the month. I never did get Spotted Dick but she always had me gagging for an Arctic Roll on New Year's Day. Happy days, though it all came to a halt in 1979 when Mum got suspicious after finding what looked like Cheese Fondue all over my bike saddle 😞. I miss you so much Mrs Hardigan 💔

+Talentedtadpole Thank you for the tip on "Nighty Night" I love British television!!! I really wish TH-cam had more Fanny videos I know she made a lot of cooking shows but there are so few on here!
Well I agree that does seem a long time in 2019, so maybe a pressure cooker might be an idea, but as to an Aldi Christmas Pud, as La Craddock might say, There are limits 🎄😁.
This Christmas Pudding looks excellent! I'd love to try a classic British Christmas Pudding. In America we have Fruit Cake, and if it's done right, it's quite good too, around Christmas time.
Christmas pudding can be really nice, although many Brits don't actually like it, as they were made to have very strong & dark ones as children. Look for Delia Smith's recipe's they're easy to follow & include various flavours, or you could try this one. You can part microwave & part steam to make it quicker & don't forget to make it well in advance so that you keep add extra alcohol in the months up to December. Custard, brandy sauce & cream are nice, I always have double cream with Baileys, we get it ready made in store here, or make it yourself & for me it's best with a very good vanilla ice cream, that really softens any strong notes in the pud. Yuletide Greetings in advance.
As the old story goes at the end of one of her tv shows when Mrs Cradock was cooking doughnuts her slightly drunk husband Johnny came out with the legendary words ' If anyone's cooking doughnuts tonight,i hope they all turn out like Fannys'...believe it or not!😁😁😁😁😂😂😈😈
I have never heard of this woman but she is so funny. I thought you was a comedian. I really laughed when she said we're making a dog's dinner of it now LOL. Happy Fourth of July everyone
A c If your really interested, the BBC made a drama of her life a few years ago called Fear of Fanny, maybe you might find it on a streaming site somewhere
Don't be silly, Fanny's far too busy to bother with such a thing, if you don't know how to make this from pure good old fashioned common sense, then really you'd be too stupid to know how to order a booklet, which there isn't one anyway, so you can't order it, even if there was one..... which there isn't! Hang on, I'm not sure now, is there a booklet or not, Fanny, help us ;-)
You're right she does mention it a bit too much - but you know what you should have been doing instead of commenting here - buying her Christmas Booklet... it's only 50p, go on buy it ;-)
+Chillmax Sounds very interesting, which booklet would this be, never heard of it, if only Fanny could have told us more, it might have been clearer...!?
Lol, very good - I know, such a vague woman, if only, if only there was somewhere people would let you buy old tat, I mean thoroughly useful booklets such as this, if only............www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BOOKLET-FANNY-AND-JOHNNIE-CRADDOCK-COOKERY-PROGRAMME-NO-1-1970-/401204174996?hash=item5d69a1e094:g:2TwAAOSw-CpX-9P5
Well you're most welcome & thanks for the thanks! I only managed to tape a few when on BBC4, but I think about 2 years The Food Network UK showed all of them in the run up to Christmas, I think I PVR'd all of them, but didn't do anything with them, if I can find them, I'll try to UL them; but do look out for them just in case ;-)
The entirety of this was a bad idea from the start. This is not how spherical puds are made, there is a fully spherical mould if you want this result, I have a vintage one & they were around long before Fanny did this, I think she just wanted to show you didn't need the mould, the confusion here is that she never mentioned that. I believe the sphere pudding comes from representing the globe & the British empire in the Victorian era ruling it, but most people have always just used a slightly rounded pudding basin & put it all in a classic double boiler. Unless I'm missing something, there's no difference with an old or new steamer, so other than Fanny's over complicated & messy foil, this process hasn't changed for centuries, the old ways are usually still the best 😁.
@thebadtemperedbrit There's definitely steamers going wayyyy back (I even have a porcelain one from the 1800s) but there are some small differences I prefer. On the newer ones, the caps lock in place (the old ones didn't and many didn't have caps), the water doesn't accidentally get in (the older ones, you do risk this) and best off all they are stick proof (the old ones you had to butter and flour). The older recipes though, you can't go wrong. Those are the best hands down if you can and marinade the fruit for months prior
gee she was beautiful....and so cute....those eyes look so innocent and vulnerable I just Love her so much...I wish I had known when this was being shown so I could have taped them ; (
Lol, yes very good! Well Christmas always has been a time of expense & luxury & so this is all part of it. I think the way around this long steam is to use a pressure cooker ;-).
I presume you're referring to Fanny using the foil from butter packs. You must remember that Fanny is a wartime gal, so frugality, especially in public & on TV is a must for her. Also, this was in the early 70's, during a big oil & financial crisis, so everything was very expensive, another reason to use what you had. In addition to that, I think it tears less than actual foil, so it's a win, win, win for Fanny!
whatever caused fanny's downfall I don't think she deserved to end up as she did a laughing stock. that so unkind and undignified. no matter what anyone says the reality is we are all imperfect and all make mistakes and until fanny lost her position on British TV she was a good cook otherwise no way would she have lasted so long. it's just a pity she her career as it did...I didn't know her personally but my heart goes out to her and by coincidence I was born on Feb 26th like her.
The BBC deliberately set her up to get rid of her. It was her critisism of a lady on a BBC programme who had won a cooking competition for having a menu that was rich dish after rich dish which make the public turn on her.
@@madabbafan It's funny, you always hear about people in TV being horrible behind the scenes. I guess that's ok, but if the public see the truth, you're out!
@@lnteIIigence she could be quite beastly to other cooks and her assistants in public and on TV as well but this incident was against a member of the public and that was it for her
Oh my dear, you DON'T have the booklet, well I shouldn't really speak to you!!!!! Seriously though, I actually looked for it just before last Christmas & the only perfect condition one I could find was on Amazon for £30, so taking into account it was 50p originally, someone did pretty well out of that ;-) Is it any good I hear you ask, well, I never got around to looking at it last year, this year I've just moved, so it's hidden in a box still, so maybe Christmas of 2019 I'll cook up Fanny's booklet spectacular, I might even film it!!!!

Hope you can find them over the pond.
You need more Fanny in your life xx
+Talentedtadpole Thank you for the tip on "Nighty Night" I love British television!!! I really wish TH-cam had more Fanny videos I know she made a lot of cooking shows but there are so few on here!
The recipes in the booklet ! Lol...She's awesome. Love her jewellery...Sarah can't keep u with her though...hurry up Sarah! Lol
im fascinated by her and i dont know why...i cant even stand modern day cookery shows!!!
She just OWNED me!
I've never seen her before! Love this!
10 hour's steaming ! Buy one from Aldi and bung it in the microwave for 3 mins.
Well I agree that does seem a long time in 2019, so maybe a pressure cooker might be an idea, but as to an Aldi Christmas Pud, as La Craddock might say, There are limits 🎄😁.
To quote Fanny 'there is only one convienience in convienience food and that is in the profit for the manufacturer - it's a load of muck'
I hate cooking even basic stuff, the poor housewifes years ago had it so hard
@@Chillmax Thank you for the tips, and advice! Happy Holidays in advance to you as well!
Her cooking is like school cookery classes
this wonderful Lady must have been the hit of every Party!!
As the old story goes at the end of one of her tv shows when Mrs Cradock was cooking doughnuts her slightly drunk husband Johnny came out with the legendary words ' If anyone's cooking doughnuts tonight,i hope they all turn out like Fannys'...believe it or not!😁😁😁😁😂😂😈😈
Benny Hill did a great sendup of Fanny and Johnny Cradock, along with the tipsiness!
it was funny when johnny was drunk and fanny tearing him off a strip on TV 🤣🤣🤣
Love watching these videos
One of these years me and my wife are gonna try that recipe.
I've touched the bowl on that chocolate- don't write and tell me, I've seen it
Probably my favourite line of the whole series. It really gives you a sense of the sort of petty drivel people must have been writing to her.
My favourite is "shame and a disgrace" for her showing some butter papers XD
I think I might write the BBC about it.
Always loved this woman & her cooking is just wonderfull xxx So so English
"And you see a lovely piece in somebodys...👀 your side of the hedge" lmaoooo
hats off to her!
I have never heard of this woman but she is so funny. I thought you was a comedian. I really laughed when she said we're making a dog's dinner of it now LOL. Happy Fourth of July everyone
A c Glad to know there's one more fan of Fanny out there 😄.
Chillmax oh yes, i had to watch a few of these. She is so honest.
A c If your really interested, the BBC made a drama of her life a few years ago called Fear of Fanny, maybe you might find it on a streaming site somewhere
Chillmax ohhh cool. Yea, im gonna look for it. Thank you
I love watching Fanny.
im gonna make my pud round next time. gorgeous
and im making that trifle. apricot and chocolate is one of my favorite things
Don't know if you ever made it but I did and it was delicious. I loved the use of sauternes as opposed to sherry and always use it now
I scrubbed my hands before I started 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂😅😅
How are we going to know how to cook this? You'd think she'd make a booklet with the details in or something.... ;)
Don't be silly, Fanny's far too busy to bother with such a thing, if you don't know how to make this from pure good old fashioned common sense, then really you'd be too stupid to know how to order a booklet, which there isn't one anyway, so you can't order it, even if there was one..... which there isn't! Hang on, I'm not sure now, is there a booklet or not, Fanny, help us ;-)
There is a pamphlet surely
i know, silly cow that Fanny 😂😂😂
Any recipes
Sarah’s face at 5.05 mins!
lovely ...I wish to know more about your booklet..
Ok, we get it, the recipe is in the flippin' booklet!
You're right she does mention it a bit too much - but you know what you should have been doing instead of commenting here - buying her Christmas Booklet... it's only 50p, go on buy it ;-)
Have you bought her Christmas Booklet yet, you know, it's more of a book than a booklet, it's that good!!!
Thank goodness for modern pudding steamers -- all that foil, YIKES 😬
Those are the best hands down if you can and marinade the fruit for months prior
gee she was beautiful....and so cute....those eyes look so innocent and vulnerable
I just Love her so much...I wish I had known when this was being shown so I could have taped them ; (
10 hours steaming!! Have a gods stack of shillings for the gas meter!!!😂😂😂
Lol, yes very good! Well Christmas always has been a time of expense & luxury & so this is all part of it. I think the way around this long steam is to use a pressure cooker ;-).
Je ne sais pas comment je suis arrivée là, peu importe. Cette dame est vraiment marrante, j'adore.
Fanny would be delighted, she was a devotee of Escoffier & adored French, Vive La Revolution!
@@Chillmax Ha ha, elle aurait beaucoup de succès à la télévision française, parfaitement le type de personnalité que l'on aime 😁
@@hadelidell4285 Very sad that she won't be able to be on French TV; she is indeed more interesting to watch than the dreary celebrities of today!
she reminds me of Auntie Mame. this would be Mame, if she was an English chef. 😂 manic, rapid, and with absolute confidence... like Fanny.
Meanwhile, the same method can be used for delivering a breech birth.
Wheres the icing sugar on the Christmas pudding?
@@narasimha7187 I'm not aware that it's customary to sift icing sugar over Christmas pudding.
She's amazing! What a great find
I wanna try making that trifle 😋
it’s just not Xmas without Fanny
Well quite 🎄
Woman is a legend
Who doesn’t love a Christmas bewfay 🤣🤣
Sarah looks absolutely terrified
That's some quality tin foil
I presume you're referring to Fanny using the foil from butter packs. You must remember that Fanny is a wartime gal, so frugality, especially in public & on TV is a must for her. Also, this was in the early 70's, during a big oil & financial crisis, so everything was very expensive, another reason to use what you had. In addition to that, I think it tears less than actual foil, so it's a win, win, win for Fanny!
@thebadtemperedbrit The foil she did the pudding in, you don't get tin foil that thick any more shows how times have changed
That doesnt look like a christmas cake it looks like something you put into a 17th century canon that then goes bang!
so delightfully eccentric
Someone needs to reprint the booklet!
@rupertprawnworthy758 it's a bit of a collectors item now, last month on Ebay it was going for £99.00. I got mine for under £10 a few years ago.
Wowser's enjoy the e numbers in that multi coloured brandi butter!!
We will
whatever caused fanny's downfall I don't think she deserved to end up as she did a laughing stock.
that so unkind and undignified.
no matter what anyone says the reality is we are all imperfect and all make mistakes and until fanny lost her position on British TV she was a good cook otherwise no way would she have lasted so long.
it's just a pity she her career as it did...I didn't know her personally but my heart goes out to her and by coincidence I was born on Feb 26th like her.
@@lnteIIigence she could be quite beastly to other cooks and her assistants in public and on TV as well but this incident was against a member of the public and that was it for her
"goodnight, and I hope your doughnuts turn out like Fanny's" -Johnnie Cradock
Hilarious!! It’s in the ruddy booklet alright!!!!
The size of that pan 🤣🤣
Apparently Fanny was great friends with Barbara Cartland. They definitely shared make up tips from I can see .
Would of loved to have seen them cook something together 😂😂
Delightfully Kitschy! I mean, who dresses and wears jewelry like that just to make a Christmas pudding and trifle? (...love all the tin foil and plastic tupperware bowl!) Lord almighty, I thought she was a female impersonator at first! The 70's were wonderfully wacky!!!
Christmas pud, very moist, or should be, and we love it with drizzle of custard.
