  • The new COULSON LIMITED EDITION from ORIS is a high-tech pilot's watch that features innovative materials technology, including a 3D printed carbon fibre case, which houses the brand's in-house Calibre 400 movement - previously seen on the PROPILOT CALIBRE 400.
    I was lucky enough to be given an exclusive opportunity to be the first channel in the UK to get hands-on with this innovative new model ahead of its official launch. In this review I give you my thoughts, but I'd love to know what you think of this new release from ORIS in the comments.

Horology is a constantly evolving medium with dynamic use of colour, texture and practicality. Price is all relative when it comes to art, right? Wow, great to see you getting an exclusive for the channel! Love the dial on this watch, the colour gradient is beautiful, and the white arabic markers look superb against its fire red backdrop. The case is lush, but not sure on the price, should keep using off the shelve movements and knock a grand off the cost.👌🏻👍🏼

      Agree that when you consider all those factors - and compare to the PPX with the same movement - that the price seems about right IMO (although the PPX Cal 400 does have a bracelet I guess).
      Overall I think Oris should have a hit on their hands with this and I can see them selling out fast.

  • @atlanticrocktimes
    @atlanticrocktimes ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have one criticism: the price. I know that there is a lot of engineering in this design, but I think it is a lot of money for a date complication only watch.

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking at this watch in isolation I can see why the price might be a concern. But compared to recent releases using the Cal 400 - like the ProPilot X, although that one has a bracelet I think the price of this one probably seems fair given the carbon case.

    • @atlanticrocktimes
      @atlanticrocktimes ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Escapement24 I am a big fan of Oris, I own one myself and love the story and designs. But I also think that the price is strategically; they want to move away from the midprice market.
      Also: I think a review must have some pointers for improvement. As an independent reviewer I think it's important to steer away from any involvement with brands that can give the impression that you're not independent.

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey buddy believe me I was looking for something to criticise about this watch, as I think I said in the video.
      I get it that being overly positive can seem like paid promotion, which I promise you this isn't - and if you check out some of my other reviews (like the Spinnaker for example) I usually point out areas for improvement. But there's nothing I really dislike about this watch and I'd rather be honest than find fault for the sake of it.
      Is it that you feel the watch is overpriced based purely on its specs? I can't actually think of another pilots watch at this price point that's from a Swiss brand, has an in house movement with COSC equivalent accuracy and a comparable power reserve to this, with a non stainless steel/lightweight case and sensible proportions. The closest I guess would be the C60 Concept from Christopher Ward, but they're not Swiss, that's a diver and was a similar price anyway.
      Or is it more that you just feel it's too much for an Oris and that the brand doesn't have the pedigree to justify this price point? I've seen a few comments elsewhere saying this and it does seem that a lot of people feel that Oris should be staying within the £1K - £2K area of the market.

    • @atlanticrocktimes
      @atlanticrocktimes ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't get me wrong; I don't doubt your independence for a minute! And yes, if you can't find any points for improvement, so be it.
      And to answer your questions about the price; I think it's a bit of both. For me a family owned, sustainable world orientated, independent company is more likely to offer products for a larger demographic than a big watch group (or 'foundation'...😉). So yes, it might be my skewed image of Oris that makes me reluctant for the higher price. But I also think the research and skill behind this watch can be better communicated. Great video about the fire fighters, but I also want a video about the 3D printing. That also is a misconception with me; I think 'printed' and I associate that with 'mass produced' and 'easy'.
      I really want to see this watch in the flesh! Now, did you buy the watch?

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point about printed implying cheap or mass produced is a really interesting one and I think you're right that Oris would do well to explain the development and work that has gone in to this.
      I haven't bought the watch - the same week I was loaned this one I bought one of my grail pieces so I'm actually selling a number of my watches currently to recoup some of the cost! Otherwise I'm pretty sure I would've ordered one of these as it's different to anything else I have.

    Forgive my naivety but I’m curious what makes is a pilots watch? No GMT hand, no chronograph, no rotating bezel. I like it and there’s a few available in Australia I’d like to have a look at.

  • @andriiret
    @andriiret ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One huge flaw I see already is PVD coating - it already went off from on the bezel which is very noticeable. Also, Oris declares -3/+5 sec accuracy yes, but it's not COCS certified

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree that DLC would be more durable than PVD. That said,I've got several PVD coated watches and haven't managed to mark or scratch the coating in several years of regular wear.
      While not COSC certified the stated accuracy Is within COSC tolerances I believe.

    • @michaelgreene1260
      @michaelgreene1260 ปีที่แล้ว

      My PVD titanium Hamilton Khaki auto is holding up exceptionally, 7 years later.
      On the other side;
      My 43.5mm aquis is running +3s/day, 5 years later.
      55th Reno P.P is +5s/day - going on 6 years
      Artix GT Chrono runs +10s/day. 3 years
      Bc3 SART -6s/day, 11 years old now.
      Oris used to do COSC certified watches. Now Oris is confident they can compete at the same specs, and they largely do.

    • @Escapement24
      @Escapement24  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael that's interesting to hear about the accuracy you're getting from your watches. Do you have them regularly serviced? Have to confess that I tend not to service my watches, but then most of them haven't stayed in the collection for more than a couple of years before I move them on for something else I want more 🤷

    • @michaelgreene1260
      @michaelgreene1260 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Escapement24
      I had my artix GT chrono serviced to be adjusted. My reno 55th will be going in for regular servicing soon, the reverser has ran dry, so that's currently out of my rotation.
      Bc3 SART is a daily work watch, has not been serviced in 11 years; though this one will probably go in next summer.
      43.5mm aquis gets the most wrist time, currently.
      Hamilton titanium KFA has not been serviced either, & also keeps remarkable time considering.
      In general, because I am a carpenter for work. I do service my watches every 5-8 years, and they all get worn, and most in actual working conditions; that being work, or the elements with sports.

      All of my watches have been purchased at rather considerable deals. Steals at that. Makes it a bit more palatable to actually comprise a varied collection which I don't have to feel like I need to constantly barter through to justify new acquisitions. 👍

      @mad0uche ปีที่แล้ว

      seems to be the trend with all of their calibre 400 watches, they're a pro pilot with 3x the price of a pro pilot, you really have to love the materials / care about the movement to justify these price tags, also in my honest maybe wrong opinion, 4 grand for a non bracelet watch is crazy
