A Closer Look at Oris Watches

  • Oris is what I consider an honest watch company in that when you buy an Oris, you know the movement included with your watch, and while silicon is used to minimize magnetization, it is not used in the hairspring, allowing an original and useful regulator for fine spring adjustment.

    I have the Wings of Hope; it's a lot of watch for the money (and for a good cause). It has really surprised me and simply changing the (quick-change) strap completely changes its character. It's accurate, discrete, well made, and comfortable to wear and has seen a place in my rotation far more regularly than expected.
    Regarding the Okavango, yes it is in Africa and, in particular, is in Botswana. What's interesting about it, is that the Okavango River, which is the fourth-longest river system in Southern Africa, does not end in the ocean, an inland sea, or a swamp. It's delta, rather, is in the middle of the Kalahari Desert! Annual floods change it from an arid landscape to an amazing network of waterways, temporary pools, etc. that is one of the world's most unusual (and best) places to go on safari...

      Wow Andrew! That sounds like a very interesting place to fly into! We used to land in a dry lakebed in California ... possible to land in any direction! Flying over the northwestern corner of Baja California in Mexico (where the land meets the Sea of Cortez) where what's left of the Colorado River trickles into the sea sounds similar to the end of the Okavango River. Take care Bill

    Another good thing about caliber 400, besides 5 days powerreserve is, you get a 10 years warenty on the movement when you registrate the watch at Oris. Furthermore it is only recemented to be serviced every 10 years. I am now waiting for my 49,5 mm divewatch with a caliber 400 movement.

My Aquis has a tungsten bezel which makes it extremely scratch resistant (more than ceramic), brilliant lume, and a striking turquoise sunburst dial. Oris is a fantastic brand and with the Calibre 400 it made a statement regarding durability and reliability (10 year warranty and service interval). I had a Big Crown ProPilot Date that my dealer included for free when I bought a Bremont. Without a doubt, the best watch I’ve ever owned at that price point. Kidding aside, that wound up being my worn daily wristwatch for the next four years. I upgraded to an Otis Altimeter which I didn’t know existed until they came out with the carbon fiber model. I do aerial sports so an altimeter watch fits my personality. It’s a very large watch but thankfully I have the wrist for it. Oris provides a lot of watch for the price and is second maybe only to Christopher Ward in that area.

    Hi Bill, I recently discovered you channel and wanted to let you know I find it very informative. This video in particular is great - I’ve been considering buying the Oris big crown pointer date calibre 403. I love everything about the design of it but my one reservation was whether the movement justified the almost doubling in price over Sellita-based models in the range. Other reviews said it was a good movement but didn’t go into as much detail as you. Now I feel confident it’s a watch I want. So thanks for that.
    Incidentally, I saw a comment by you on another video about you liking the lacquer dials, instead of the enamel ones, on the anordain model 1s. I have one (off white) and love it. It’s a great dress/smart-casual watch.
    A question if I may. I know you’re a fan of Habring2. So am I. I’m looking at its Globetrotter model as a dress GMT watch. It’s either that or the Grand Seiko SBGM221. Any insight on either watch would be much appreciated.

    I recently bought the Pro Pilot X with cal 115 based on the uniqueness of the movement. I adore it. The case is titanium and proportions are excellent so it wears much smaller than the specs would suggest. The snail gears you've highlighted are for the non-linear power reserve indicator, I assume. Their placement right below the power reserve, and the fact that they are non-linear, lead me to think they're related.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi ❤️4⏱... On the one hand, the 473 has a wonderful 5-day reserve with an equally fetching power reserve indicator on the back. It's based on the SW200, which in turn is based on the ETA 2824-2. It ticks at 4Hz, which for some reason has not been revealed. (Why the secrecy?... Rolexes have the same 28,800 kph.) The "all-newness" of the 473 is perhaps in the pointer-date (which I like) and perhaps steps they took to prevent magnetization...The price of the Oris Big Crown Calibre 473 at $4,200 ... is a bit steep. Take care, Bill

I did go over the Caliber 115 at the end of the video, so check that out.
