Brilliant description. I got half way through building one of these but it only managed the Big Muff and I was getting distracted by other muffs at the time.
Even if you could put in a New Order for one of these, I'd probably still get a PWM Malevolent first. So, it's cool to get to experience this one vicariously.
Halfway through your Gabber section, a Herpes add popped up. perfect timing. that thing is a percussion beast. really fast envelopes and punchy as it gets. super killer.
Made one back in the 70’s as a young electronics engineer! Worked well trouble was I couldn’t play it, ended up selling it to a mate for £100. Wish I had kept it!
I actually made my own PCB from the articles but had to make the PCB shorter (500mm) as my simple layout-program had that limit. All components in place but right now the tricky part is the kbd - I must have like to contacts per key - one for the voltage (not 1V/octave) and one for gate. A nice little synth. Hope I can finish this one and give it to a grandchild.
OMG, I love this thing, even when it is not entirely in tune😂. I love the part at the end of the noise generator, you did a simple bass tune, but I really dig it, especially because it is a bit out of tune, it gives it a nice funky druggy drunk sauce. Yeah this thing is not perfect, we arent either, but it lives 😁 and it's nasty
I used to look at these in ETI and think "yeah... I'm going to build my own synth"... but just getting the magazine was about as far as my pocket money would go. They are fabulous in their own way though.
If you want to build one now, getting the correct negative temperature coefficient resistors for the VCO and VCF would be a problem. I think all other components could be found easily. The VCF self-oscillation could blow your speakers, it was vicious. The pseudo-random counter of the noise generator was prone to locking up. The modulation of the triangle waveform shape was an unusual feature. Being DIY the build quality was variable but if the right components were used it was a neat monosynth.
Barney built one while in Joy Division but couldn’t get it to work. They used Martin Zero’s (Hannett) modded Transcendent’s on Unknown Pleasures and Closer.
4:10 I happened to be looking at my volume meter. Bright red lights and a loud noise at the same time, jumped so hard it felt like I got shot in the head.
I can remember reading about the Transcendent 2000 in Electronics today back in the late 70s. Sadly the £186 cost of the kit was well out of reach for me in those days.
Oils and solvents used to clean potentiometers can wash away the special grease that makes them feel silky smooth. I have a tube of soap thickened grease (Rocol Kilopoise) that can be applied to the shafts which make them feel velvety smooth again but it does mean dismantling them…
Indeed. These were cleaned. But some just feel horrid. It's definitely something overlooked. A lot of older designs just don't have the feel. Playing on a proper ems synthi last week really showed that
I'm wondering what was 'upstream' of that precision resistor? For it to actually burn it out means something was asking for much more current through it than specced, it seems to me.
I think with those type of resistors it is more an age thing. Nothing particularly upstream. It's those funky black resistors. I have had a few Just not work. No heat related breakdown
Get some Deoxit for cleaning potentiometers. Damned expensive in the UK but worth every penny. Nothing comes close to it. Makes the pots smooth like new.
oki doki synth-heads, now it's time to come clean on this synth. (hmm, maybe it is THIS actual synth I am talking about) who was the lucky bugger that won ONE, on UK eBay, about the time when the above video was published, about a week ago? I have overslept that auction. lol, but a couple of times I had the feeling that I was biding on some 'collection in person only' obscure piece of junk against Sam of (Not) Obsolete
@ohm_studi_ohm Next time when 'For parts or not working' and 'collection only' gem/junk surfaces on ebay, let's make a raffle on who is getting it, thus we don't pump up the price bidding out against each other. is it illegal? nice!
10:22 Old pots were great, sometimes, when they were young. Old, heavily used pots stink. Old and new crappy pots stink, but there were a lot of high-quality pots available back when dinosaurs built synths. Actually, pots are not better than they once were - it is only in the last 10-12 years we started getting really good pots again, like one could get in the old days (I mean, for the right price, there were always good ones, but they became rare for a while).
Indeed. But most of the old plastic pots on any sort of synth from the 60's and early 70's feel not great now. Much improved in the late 70's. But yeah even a restored arp 2600 for instance with original pots still just feels nasty. Small price to pay I guess!
Somewhere between Mini Moog, Big Muff, and talking birthday card.
Brilliant description. I got half way through building one of these but it only managed the Big Muff and I was getting distracted by other muffs at the time.
As above… Good description
I was a sucker for talking birthday cards as much as I was a synth and a pedal
I built one of these back in the day, for a friend. Friggin wicked synth.
princess anne built one of these in the back of her scimitar!
Hahaha
Then gifted it to New Order.
Nice. Barney from New Order built one of these.
Barney the dinosaur built one too, old 'merican kids say.
Joy Division not New Order (the synth was used on unknown pleasures in 1979)
Yep, it didn't work either.
@@GNeuman Unlike the jabs!!!!!

I bought a ready-made one as I knew how crap I was at putting things like that together.
So much fun.
Thanks Sam! A lot of those sounds took me back to the 80's when I was a teenager! Thanks for sharing! 🙂😎🤓❤
Sunday is now complete.❤
one day imma build one of these boys. there's something so charming and punk about it
You always find the coolest synths. Looks like a professionally built synth, for being a DIY one!
Even if you could put in a New Order for one of these, I'd probably still get a PWM Malevolent first. So, it's cool to get to experience this one vicariously.
Hey there, I still got one of These in my cellar. Unfortunatly some keyboard contacts are broken. Any ideal where to get them? Greetz
Halfway through your Gabber section, a Herpes add popped up. perfect timing. that thing is a percussion beast. really fast envelopes and punchy as it gets. super killer.
I hope you make a dub/jungle track with that thing. it would be massive.
Still got mine, but it got smoke damaged in a recent fire in my electronics lab :( Hopefully can bring it back to life soon...

I will come to your museum when I can. Canadian here.
I've seen a kitten with very long whiskers playing it, he rocked.
Nice. Barney from Joy Division built one of those.

Nice! Sounds like a good project!

Love the raw sound

I too blew my speaker (Wharfedale) while first exploring the resonance control

Synthesizer Sunday? Sign me up! Oh wait I'll just subscribe

yeah pricey!

I am not getting the Princess Ann reference, but I like this piece of electronics very much.
Because every time you mention transcendent 2000's people say about new order. Same as a reliant scimitar and princess anne 😂
obscure propietary music tech pre-internet era, i like.
as a kid I always wanted one
Nice sound. People spend a lot of money on plugins to get that drifting effect.
Its probably going to be too much of a hassle but a keyboard with a kosmo panel on the top be awesome :)
You just played kraftwerks entire back catalogue
Some nice rhythms :)
Someone associated with New Order undoubtedly owned a Scimitar at some point.
Hey one of the Joy Division moded versions is for sale on eBay

Interesting old bit of homebuilt kit. 2x 👍
It's Synthesizer Sunday, keep your hand on the volume knob until the video comes to a full and complete stop.

I do search up Kosmo synths :)

That will be me I guess If it’s the non working one that sold on feb 3rd 😊
Almost finish repairing it.
But I didn’t see this video till now.

Isn’t this the synth that New Order built!
British synth manufacturers seemed hell bent on breaking with convention. Especially with the envelopes. The Wasp is the same. Weird but unique.
They're ALL DIY kits! That's what makes them... different?
New Order had a Reliant Scimitar.
New order built one of them
Only one Sam Battle!
Something something joy division something
It's not 'out' it has 'character'
Joy Division built the transcendent, they barely used it in New Order.
but did they drive a scimitar?
@@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE Not that that I'm aware of, I think they mostly got around in Tony Wilson's Peugeot 504 station wagon.
