My son moved out recently/ attends a local college. I announced family dinners Friday night as a way to see my son. We always invite his girlfriend ( our new reality). We usually go out somewhere casual or sometimes cook a recipe at home. Sometimes it’s sandwiches and a movie on the sofa. It has been the BEST thing for our relationship ... our son looks forward to it. Keep conversation light, no complaining, blaming, or criticizing allowed. It’s the perfect bridge to establishing an adult relationship 😊
My 85-year-old dad is in a nursing home. Once a month I reserve the activity room, and my siblings and their kids all arrive for a "family night" potluck dinner with games and visiting. My dad loves seeing all the grandkids, and I get to socialize with my adult relatives and didn't have to clean my house for company!
Hi Tracy, you are hitting again all the right notes, especially with keeping things light and fun. My husband and I have 4 adult children from 3 marriages and by doing a once a month family dinner, we actually created them a safe place to get to know each other better and keep in touch. We have it scheduled as the third Sunday of the month, so everyone can reserve that day in their calendars. It was a little skepticism at the beginning, but now it has became routine and everybody loves it.
WOW You are so absolutely right. I’m that woman. That’s my role. I’m the one who has all the parties. I host all the holidays. The work is all on me BUT I get all the leftovers. Look at it that way. I grew up in Michigan with a close Italian Family. We spent a lot of time at grandma and grandpa’s house. Nothing was perfect. We ate, drank, laughed, and had fun. Made memories that last a lifetime!
Our children are grown and this information is going to be used regularly! We have family dinners, too and this information will make them run more smoothly! Thanks so much!
Thanks Tracy. I’m the 3rd oldest out of my parents 7 daughters. All of us except 1 have kids and all of us have spouses. My parents didnt really raise us to be united. They had a weird energy going on when we were young and my dad never went to any of my moms side of the family parties and vise versa. As sisters there has NEVER been a time when ALL of us are on speaking terms. There’s always at least one of us that isn’t talking to another. I’ve been working on myself for awhile now and after watching this video it really clicked to me that we need to practice unity. I may be the one that will start making monthly family dinners for my sisters and our families. If my parents want to come they can and whoever can’t make it oh well. There’s always the next month. Thanks again Tracy 😊💖
Reading you story broke my heart. I am so sorry that there are siblings not on speaking terms. I encourage you to follow-through with attempting to bring the family together. Keep your expectations low, as many may not be open to it. I would not give up. Stay the course. Good Luck and God Bless!
Wonderful wise encouragement as usual, Tracy! We have lunch after church (we attend the same church) almost every Sunday for our family. They know they are welcome, but no obligation to come. I usually make tacos or we grill burgers; something easy and a family favorite. We have 4 married children (3 sons & 1 daughter) and 6 grandchildren. It is a priority to us to connect with them and they like it as well.
Our 4 children, (3 boys, 1 girl) are grown, 1 lives nearby, 1 lives in our home 4 months out of the year (she's a travel blogger, so travels 8 months a year), the other 2 live in PA (we are in SC). We see a lot of each other...when we can. Like Tracy says, just make it happen. Maybe not all of us will be together at the same time, no biggie. Enjoy who is present at the time and everything will work out.
My son is only 5 but in the future of course I would like to host a family dinner so this video was very helpful. I love how relaxing your voice is and how many great tips you always give us.
What a great video! I started "Friday night cookout " a few years ago spring through early fall. Our local adult kids can come if they want and bring friends. Very casual and there's always smores.. I'm surprised by how much even our college kids, who live at home, look forward to it! Bonus: We've been able to get to know their friends.
Another big hit video! I love the way you initiate your family dinners and your extended family get togethers. I'm a little OCD and a perfectionist. In Luke 10 in the bible, I'm Martha the one trying to make sure the home is perfect before Jesus arrives. Like you, I'm also the one who initiates and plans family get togethers. I just sent out an email to my five siblings about Easter. I don't mind being the one to plan family events, my sister Tracy wil get the ball rolling once in awhile. You spoke to my heart when you stated that everything doesn't have to be perfect, just spending time together, sharing a meal, guys watching ballgames on TV, the girls chit chatting, playing family games(monopoly, scrabble, etc.), us girls sharing makeup tips polishing nails, talking fashion, just spending time with each other... that's the true meaning of family time. Everything doesn't have to be perfect and I know Jesus spoke to Martha about Mary spending her time wisely by spending time with Him. But the way you said it in this video just hit home and spoke to me immensely! Thank you!!! Hugs and blessings. Vicky
Vicky, I LOVE this! I too and MARTHA! Not proud of it, either. I much prefer to be Mary! I make that happen when the company is here, by visiting and enjoying conversation. Dishes and clean-up can wait! Thank you so much for sharing and it sounds like your EASTER will be a huge success. Sounds like my perfect FAMILY DAY! Awesome you for initiating the gathering! God Bless! xx
I dearly miss doing this with my family as I was growing up. You brought back so many memories for me! I can only do this once a year as my son lives out of state and my daughter lives overseas with her dad. As well I have an infant at home❤️ Stay well beautiful lady!
Another wonderful video! What you said was so true. They won't remember the food but they will remember the fun times and the connect they have with each other.
My grandmother used to host family dinners for her 5 children, their spouses, children and grandchildren (her great grandchildren) It was always Taco Tuesday. She did the meat and we all brought the toppings and tortillas. It was always casual and we could have 50+ people. Oh the memories and habits it created. My sisters and I now host our own family dinners...sometimes we cook and sometimes we just order pizza! But we agree on the fact that spending time all together is priceless! Two of us have married sons and their wives are always happy to be with us. Show them love and be non-judgmental, it will go a long way!
ditto on avoiding drama. my favorite is when the host or guest asks tough questions singling out one person at the dinner table for all to hear. and then they wonder why they don't have a good relationship.
This was a very helpful video! We will be celebrating Easter dinner the night before Easter to fit my families schedules. I really like the idea about a group text, especially about food choices. I'll be taking your advice to make it a memorable, relaxed time with my daughters and husband! Thank you 😊
Thank you Leslie! We too, will be celebrating Easter the day before. This will be with extended family. I hope you have a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing!

Family dinners were always so stressful with my family. Your family dinner sounds amazing. Good for you. Your family is very fortunate to have you be the leader of the pack of these family dinners.
@@TracyHensel We will talk soon. I'm in the process of making big changes in my life and will discuss further when we speak. They're not easy changes, although necessary. Much love to you for always being there.
You are absolutely right about family dinners. The way to have them is to plan to have them. We are a family with all sons, and our sons, daughter in law, and grandchildren look forward to the family dinners. We have adjusted our days and times many times because of work schedules but that just adds to the variety. It might be a Sunday afternoon lunch, a Tuesday night dinner or even a Saturday brunch so that the rest of the day is free for other things. I, too, had to overcome expectations of perfection so that these times together could be a blessing for everyone and not a stressor for me or anyone else. It is worth the effort.
Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful tradition. We are a flexible family, as well. There are no set days or set times. We accommodate the kids and they all look forward to it so much, they are eager to find the time to make it work. God Bless you and your family!
Thanks, Tracy! I will plan on doing this when my 3 children start to leave the home. Thanks for the tips on keeping the family connected & cultivating relationships long-term.

Tracy I do family dinners, however it’s getting harder, I have sons! One is with a psycho, jealous, control freak, she didn’t have the closeness with her family, as we do, she seems to have issues Re; this! Etc. etc. anyway, it’s not so clear cut. I’m the kind, that will go the extra mile, however...lately, I’m finding myself running low on patience! On the flip side, Thank God our sons still enjoy hanging out with us.
Hi Donna! Fantastic that you are making the effort to host Family Dinners. God Bless you for doing so. I am sorry that the relationship with your daughter in law is not well. I am curious, how did your sone end up with such a mess? Keep doing what you are doing. You can only control Donna!
He’s a young 23, handsome, intelligent, went to college is a First Responder. He recently applied to become a police officer, which scares the hell out of me! Anyway His cousin’s wife introduced him to Her friend, which her friend turned out to be 10 years older than our son, she has the most adorable 4 year year old from a previous relationship, the age difference we were NOT happy about, BUT what are you gonna do? His cousin is on my husband’s side of the family, my husband was very upset about it, in the beginning, She’s very different, like very, very different, it’s hard to explain, she seems to have an envy, jealousy streak with others. He had moved in with her, it didn’t work out too well, he eventually got his own place, than they got back together, I said “OMG” what is he doing???? he doesn’t like being alone, my GOD at that age I remember I didn’t care about being alone, my life was fulfilled! I was having fun, etc. The young kids of todays times, I seriously don’t get them...UGH! And LOL! Anyway, so they’ve been together now going on a few years, they have problems! I let him know he can come home anytime, if he ever needed too, he said too me thank you, I appreciate it, he doesn’t like how strict I am, no drinking alcohol in our home, unless we say it’s okay, no girls spending the night, yeah well It’s our home, I really don’t care who doesn’t agree with our rules. My husband says, maybe it will work out with them, maybe it won’t, we can’t live their lives for them, yeah, yeah I get it, but you know us moms, we are going to give our suggestions, advise, opinions, etc. He will come by himself many times, for dinners, yes of course she’s always invited, many times she doesn’t come, a few times she has, she also has a complex about her age verses his age...well hellooooo! Anyway I’ll get off my soapbox now. I’m sure you get the gist of it all. My priority is always trying to make sure we remain in tact as a close family, many don’t care about this in todays times. Thank You Tracy! PS I’ve told friends about you, that have daughters, that they should follow you.
Ahh, I’m glad you pointed out that many people just “think” something because that’s what they’ve always heard. My mom always said “girls are harder to raise than boys”, which personally I think is false and hurtful to daughters, it really depends on how you raise them.
Hi Vanessa! I agree. Another myth is teenagers are so difficult. For our girls, the teen years were the easiest. I suppose if you don't do your parenting role well, when they are young ... then yes, we know WHO will be in charge during the teen years - Not the parents! Thank you for sharing!
Tracy Hensel ahhh! You responded! You’re one of the very few & favorite TH-camrs I watch and I think you must be a wonderful mom and an inspiration to me. I’ve only got one so far who is a toddler, and I totally agree with you, I have learned to establish the tough discipline now, which I think will pay off later when he’s a teenager and then it should be a breeze... I think...
I like hearing that you consider Tim's daughter your grandchild. The daughter of a former co-worker married a man who had three children from his first marriage. It bothered me that my co-worker didn't have an inclusive attitude towards them.
Good Morning Tracy- So this morning I was put if a weird situation that made me question my integrity. We had a meeting today with a few of my upper management. During the meeting, a few questions were asked to my partner (There is only 2 of us in our department and she is the senior). She lied repeatedly through each question. I decided to tell my boss, if a non-accusatory way. I said "Well, the process here is not quite like that, what we have been doing is...blah blah blah". However, I feel like I am betraying my coworker and I dont want to look like a snitch. Ugh. What would you do ? XOXOX
Thank you for sharing, Tara! Unfortunately, I am not certain ... as I would need to know more of the story in order to make an educated decisions. Good Luck!

That's really too bad. If only she knew how much she was missing out! Thanks for sharing!
Good Luck!
