You might have gone a little too early. Usually after they flower(not before) or when it starts warming up are good times. My Indian variety azaleas are popping but none of my sazukis yet. Also I’d recco mixing kanuma with a little regular soil. I find that stuff crushes way too easy and it gets mega compacted

Definitely put some top dressing on, their top roots are most active
Ahha it’s an experiment. Not going to spend thousands until I know how it grows and thrive

Hopefully it can recover in the kanuma, because it doesn't look very healthy. The leaves shouldn't be pale yellowish green with brown edges like that.
