I'm taking care for and propagating Azalea's (also Satzuki's) for many years now and I do agree with your way. Perhaps a few additional things. Removing those flowers who withered (indeed: totally!) can extend the flowering periode a lot and of course: keep them out of the direct afternoon sunlight and out of the rain, pouring into the flowers. You can experiment with the soil mixture but when you use mainly Kanuma soil (which tend to turn slightly acid in time), you should use normal fertilizer but when you are using a mixture that is not acid (or doesn't turn acid), then you should use a fertilizer that is specially suitable for Azalea's and so on. Do not mix that up otherwise the soilmixture gets too acid or it doesn't get acid enough. It's a mistake that Kanuma users make quite often. Personally, I use Kanuma mixed with Azalea soil (from a garden centre). It makes the mixture cheaper and it prevents it from drying out too soon, wich can happen these days quite easily during hot and dry spring or summer periods (I live in the Netherlands). I always repot after flowering and removing the withered flowers and a lot of foliage and then keep them out of the direct sunlight for a while. And you are very right: Azalea's are very resilient. Originally they are growing in quite harsh conditions and in mountain regions. There, they tend to grow rather low. Good luck!
Thanks for sharing your experience and tips! 🌸 Your advice on soil mixture is very useful especially if I switch to using Kanuma soil! Repotting after flowering and keeping them out of direct sunlight for a while is excellent advice too. Azaleas are indeed resilient, growing in harsh conditions in the wild. Thanks again for the helpful tips, and good luck with your azaleas in the Netherlands! 😊

Incredible sets of flowers and very well presented Adam. The debate at when is best to repot is always interesting and I have tried both several times over the last 8 years. In the end, I have found that I seem to get more consistent results doing the repot and hard prune about now. I think the bigger issue is pot sizing and soil used. A good video for anybody to watch :)
Thanks very much Xavier! 🤗 Ohh that is interesting! How hot does it get for you during the summer where you are? I would definitely go on the larger size of pot for azaleas 🌸
Great, informative video. I just picked up an azalia from a local nursery and because it was looking a bit unhealthy I was able to get it for half price. Now I'll take this info and use it to bring back this beautiful little plant. Cheers
First time catching one of your videos, good stuff man. Also great timing as the day you posted this was the day I brought home my first two azalea to get started. Really excited to add some flowers to my existing bonsai.
You're welcome. I got a question: I repotted my focus and found either a root or limb below soil level that has two seedlings sprouting up. What should I do??
Really good video on Azalea bonsai especially why to remove the seed sack to put all the energy into the tree. Taking about trees wanting to pass on their DNA I know of some trees who have never flowered then suddenly one year they have a great flush of flowers, then the tree dies due mainly from being neglected over time, happy to think it has passed on it’s DNA from the seeds it produced. Really good idea to use chop sticks to hold the tree in the basket. Thanks for the video Adam BTW I don’t have any azaleas in my collection.
Enjoyed this and those azalea are looking vibrant and healthy. You need a tiny little bonsai towel for dabbing the rain off those flowers 😂 Azaleas, unlike many other trees, are basally dominant and grow strongest low down. This means they put out lots of suckers from the base, shoots and stronger growth low down so prune these bits strongest. Since the apex is weaker, prune it less. And they propagate easily from cuttings so save any larger bits you prune off to grow roots.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🌸 Haha, a tiny bonsai towel sounds perfect! 😂 Thanks for the tips on pruning azaleas Jason. For sure they send out lots of suckers! During the growing season I am always cutting the ones at the base out!
This was a very well executed tutorial on getting this done, also the full explanation of getting air pockets out from under the bonsai in order to have a healthy root ball grow. Really enjoying your content. Maybe at some point you could visit Tradman's bonsai in japan?
Ah nice one! In the uk I recommend to repot in early spring instead of after flowering unless you can keep your trees in a humid environment in partial sun 🤗
Great video again Adam. I'm working on an azalea rescue project. Bought three in one small pot, almost no leaves, the whole thing dry as a desert. Since I've heavily watered them some new leaves have started to form, but last week I repotted them into pond baskets and a 1:1:1:1:1 of akadama, lava, pumice, zeolite and ericaceous compost- now we water and pray ^_^
Ah nice one! I hope it survives for you! If you mist the azalea with a solution of epsom salt i have fount that this helps boost chlorophyll in the leaves! 1/2 tablespoon of epsom salt to 1L of water!
Beautiful set of trees. Unfortunately azaleas can't bear the cold in my area unless in ground or put in a coldframe/greenhouse, which I don't have and make jealous of my club members' beautiful azaleas.
Wow! Your azaleas looks stunning😍 I bought one earlier this spring but I don’t think it’ll flower until next year☹️ It was a bush from a garden center and I split the 4 trunks and sadly 2 of them died for some reason, I hope the other 2 survives until next year😍
Thank you Dahlmasen 🤗 No rush in Bonsai! You will surely get flowers next year! Maybe the 2 that died did not have enough root or may have been stressed too much. Glad the other 2 lived for you!
Great video. I just bought and pruned a white Azalea I picked up. I'll wait until next spring to repot after they flower. Quick question, what are those little baskets stuck in the soil of your larger azalea trees?
Great video, I just wish I could grow azaleas here in the Palm Springs-Indio California area. It’s so hot here from May through October. Rain, what’s that. Can grow other plants and trees. I learn much from your videos that can be applied to other plants and trees.
Thank you! 🌸 Azaleas can be tough to grow in such a hot and dry climate. It's great that you can still apply the techniques to other plants and trees, though. Keep experimenting and adapting what you learn, and you’ll surely have success with the plants that thrive in your area 😊
Hi Adam great vid! Im from Doire myself and been watching your vids for a few months now and i was wondering do you get your substrate locally or online.
That one you repotted was gorgeous!! I love that color! Where are you from may I ask? I had family from County Down, Bainbridge I think it was? My sister and I want to visit there someday along with Fyvie Scotland as we had a lot of family there too.
just pruned one of my azaleas last night. its a rhoda azalea hybrid i found last summer on my trip to new jersey (the garden state lol) for 12$ i got 2 plants in one pot.. i let one flower and the 2nd i kept pruning the flowers off to let it get healthier. nice work adam! what are you using for pests (imp)?
I am new mom to an azalea bonsai, was gifted it about 2 months ago. It has already nearly died on me a few times. We are having an abnormally hot summer so even keeping the plant outside has burned it to a crisp, even in the shade. I did a drastic change, repotted it in 100% kanuma (I think it was just regular soil that it was planted in previously), and did a hard prune. It looks like a sad skeleton now but I do have some promising little new leaves popping up. No sign of any flower buds. I’m having to keep it indoors due to the hot temps outdoors. Any advice on helping it along? 🤞🏼
Where do you get cut putty? Ill be taking my azelea out of its training pot and putting it in it's first bonsai pot this year. Are there any other options to cover wounds?
Thank you for the video. I would have a question, what's the after care when you pruned them, do you keep them in the shade for a while or they can go back on the same spot? (Quite exposed and sunny in my case)
Hi! Rainwater is generally the best for azaleas because it's free of the salts and chemicals often found in tap water. Rice water can be beneficial due to its nutrient content, but it can also alter the soil pH. Azaleas prefer slightly acidic soil, so if you use rice water, monitor the soil pH to ensure it stays in the right range. Overall, rainwater is the safest bet for keeping your azaleas happy and healthy! 🌧🌺
@@notionbonsai I’m thinking of repotting and pruning my azalea around July is that ok? All my flowers just fell off. Probs too late but I think my azaleas roots have began to overgrown the soil. I don’t have any bonsai rocks, and idk any substitute as well can you help me?
Hi! Brown leaves on an azalea can be caused by several factors. It might be due to underwatering, overwatering, poor drainage, or exposure to too much direct sunlight. Check the soil moisture, ensure it's draining well, and place the plant in a spot with indirect light. If you see any signs of pests or diseases, treat them accordingly. Good luck, and I hope your azalea recovers soon! 🌿😊
If you wait until the flower is in full bloom to remove it, isn't most of the energy of the plant already expended?.. is there an earlier stage to spot that can completely negate the process (branch by branch)
Hey! This is a great question! If an Azalea is particularly stressed and you really need it to recover from something, for optimal energy conservation, you can remove flower buds at the early bloom stage, when they are just beginning to open, though this sacrifices the aesthetic value of the blooms. If the tree is healthy, it is still completely fine to deadhead them right after the flowers start to wilt. This way the tree does not waste any energy in creating the seed head. I hope this helps!
Hey Jdutton24! I use an Azalea specific fertiliser with the NPK value of 10:6:6. This is good for azaleas because it promotes vigorous growth and lush foliage with its higher nitrogen content. The phosphorus aids in strong root development and enhances blooming, while the potassium improves disease resistance and overall plant health. I like to use a liquid fertiliser for these over a solid pellet one as it gives me quick absorption and immediate benefits! If you can not find a high nitrogen fertiliser a balanced fertiliser is also a great option!
@@notionbonsai whats the brand? I have several options for fertilizers and thought about using them in conjunction with a soil acidifier (sulfur) but it would be easier just have a deiciated one for azaleas
I feel like having suck a fst fraining soil is unnecessary, why add all the grit and then put moss on to hold water. Why is ericaceous compost with grit or pumice of whatever no more suitable especially if u dont want to be a slave to the watering
Hey! I totally understand your concerns. It rains a lot where I live so I personally prefer to use faster draining soils. I find the sphagnum moss is a lot more aerated and better for root development than mixing in compost. Though there is nothing wrong with doing this either if you live in a climate with less rain. Hope this helps! 🤗
I got into Bonsai because I have PTSD from military service. It has been so beneficial and vastly rewarding. Thank you for sharing
