    I realize I misidentified the Boss several times throughout the video. It's a SD-1. Not DS-1. Also got a copyright flag for the GnR riff. So dumb. I don't even play it well and it's in no way intended to be a substitute for the REAL song TH-cam!
    The other thing I forgot to mention is I have been burned by youtubers using IRs to demo amps. I know they are used professionally and sound great but in my circles only three out of about 50 plus guitar players I know use them live so they don't represent the experience we have with amps in our homes or in a live situation. Basically it's like presenting amps in the most favorably unrealistic way and I bought dozens of amps based off those great presentations and was completely disappointed when I fired them up at home with my gear. That is why I chose to use my iPhone and real speakers. The volume I'm using in this video is only slightly less than a live situation.

      You are Absolutely Right, most you tuber have so much process in their recording, that every amp they play sound the same, no way to know the real sound in the room. Thank you very much for that vids. I do not play with a band, so most of the time i feel the sound is too bright. The way you record it without back track is the right way to let us know how it realy sound in the room and get an idea of what we will heard in real.

      I have been having rather heated discussions with folks about these IR’s and feel the same way you do.. I have this same amp and one particular TH-cam channel the guy makes it sound so perfect but all of his amps sound that way. I still watch his videos but his production is so crisp and not life like lol. People telling me the IRS aren’t doin anything but when I tell them to hook it up to a actual cab it becomes something else.. they simply won’t do it. I’m like so your not playing it in front of a 4-12 cab.. your playing into a wanna be computer enhanced sound. Funny thing is this dude was using a IR based off from the cream backs I use… his sounded so perfect that I was like… say what?? With his settings and his exact drive pedal I couldn’t even get close.. so thanks for being honest. I’m thinking about trying a treble booster with mine. Have you done this?

    I so agree with you about the Resonance control and bass frequencies in regards to classic albums. I recently took out the resonance circuit and I'm not going back. So punchy and articulate without it. Sounds much closer to the classic records we know and love. Great video, man! I love the upper midrange that Marshalls provide, would love to hear that modded one behind you. Cheers.

    Yes, you are spot on. JCM800 is my go-to as well. It's just right every time. I used to drag the 2203 out to small gigs. Now I have the studio version. Using the effects loop on my studio head drops the volume and clarity which doesn't happen with the 2203, but it still sounds great. My clean channel is 50s wiring and volume rolled back, but I love what you're doing with your "clean channel". Really cool.

    Great video! Thanks the SD1 or TS9 both boost the SC 800 into the 80's - 90's with ease also a TC mini spark in front of the SD1 gives it another dimension (3rd channel) too. I like your method with the 4 cables very versatile , nice chops by the way nice to hear the Big Wreck in there too , I agree less is more with amps too many options = chaos in finding your tone . There is nothing better than an 800 in the sweet spot, touch sensitive and crunchy , punchy , glassy , dynamics and definition .... So glad Marshall made these amps, its funny how we fall down the rabbit hole of tone chasing and revert back to the original formula Marshall / boost / Les P

    • @bhosterman
      @bhosterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not 100% sure this is accurate but I think the Jubilee has Diode clipping in the circuit. I have an irrational bias against diode clipping. For some reason I just want all the distortion to come from tubes. I guess I feel like diode clipping is a shortcut or done because its far cheaper. Another possibly irrational feeling I hold about diode clipping is that it's too linear. I feel like tubes distort in a more exponential way. I have nothing to back that up other than my perception. Even with my latest setup in this video I use no "Drive" on the SD-1. I think there is probably some level of drive/clipping even at zero but at least most of the distortion is coming from the tubes. Having said all that I think the Jubilee is a fantastic sounding amp! Anyway. Thanks for the comment.

    • @jeffreyhall76
      @jeffreyhall76 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      bhosterman I could be wrong but the diodes are only on rhythm clip and high gain channels but the clean channel is high headroom jcm with no clipping. It’s basically a supped up jcm from what I’ve seen. Not looking to continue your amp addiction but if you’ve never tried a juby, the high gain and rhythm clip on mine are awesome. I have a Nash strat, an Sg standard(490’s alnico 2)and a Jackson pro(Duncan distortion ceramic) the amp distortion is really good with all my guitars. I bought it for strat tones and was blown away with the overdrive. I can plug my Jackson in and get Steve Stevens, Ratt, and def leopard tones. I plug in my sg and it does sabbath tones. The rhythm clip isn’t really it’s own channel though. It puts diode clipping into the clean channel circuit. Great amp though.

      @@jeffreyhall76 I have Mini Jub and love it. It can get close to an 800 tone but it has way more gain and a really tight bottom end. You can dial out that diode however it doesn't get as dirty. The key is not to go to high on the input gain i keep it at 3-4. Output Master at 7. Has foot switchable clean channel which I really need even though you can roll back guitar volume has amazing cleans. . I email Marshall whats the basic difference and their answer was more gain in the Jubilee. Just make sure it you buy it new you can return it if you don't like it cause it sounds different than any Marshall in a good way but keeps that 800 grind.

    Dude you are so right about that amp and a sd1 in front of it. I bought the sc20 combo and put an sd1 in front and it’s just the perfect classic rock tone. I have a Helix and a power cab and it’s a great piece of gear, but the new 800 and that pedal just kills. It’s funny when I use the Helix the Friedman dirty model is my favorite, and any other model I use I try to to get it to sound like the Friedman. I love the Helix but it’s in danger of becoming the pedal board for the 800.

    • @bhosterman
      @bhosterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This can happen with bad power or a ground loop problem. I experienced this when I used one power supply to power pedals both in front of the amp and in the loop. Once I got two power supplies and isolated the pre and post pedals it went away.

    • @bhosterman
      @bhosterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t read the last part before responding. As far as the patch cable going from send to return and causing a hum, it can be from a bad cable or you might have a problem. I also noticed that certain cables and their orientation to the amp could cause a hum. If I moved them around the amp I could find a sweet spot where the hum was all but gone. Not ideal but that was my experience and solution.

    I really liked your comments. You can get so caught up in adjusting and tweaking your amp...you forget to play. Then even when you are playing you're thinking about which combination might sound even better. It's distracting! I'm currently trying to decide between the Marshall SV or SC, the JJ. Jr. and the Bogner 3534. I'm leaning toward the more basic Marshalls. Which Bogner are you referring to? Big Wreck, ah? Hearing damage here too.

      I generally add a comp into my high gain and lead tones. I do this for obvious reasons, add sustain but also to run a lower gain on the amp for clarity and to have that lower gain available by removing either the distorted pedal and or comp. It just allows for some variation in tone when it’s called for. I used to be a purist and stay away from solid state clipping and rely solely on tube gain but I’ve realized that many of my favorite tones were derived that way. I always thought of it as a cost cutting measure by amp builders and therefore associated it with being cheap.

    Cool video. I’m curious about the reference you made about the 4 cable method (along with the comp), and how the eq is “making the clean sound”. Basically, how’s it all hooked up?

    • @bhosterman
      @bhosterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should make a video of the routing. I know others have done it. Basically the guitar runs into the G system. The G system has 4 independent loops and a 5th called an insert. The insert is designed for amplifiers. It has an impedance set up to mimic a guitar. That “send” goes to the input of any amp. Next you take a line from the “send” of the amp’s loop and run it into the “return” of the “insert” on the g system. This captures the preamp side of an amplifier. Then from the final output of the g system you run a line to the “return” of the amplifier loop. This completes the signal path. By doing this you can use the built in wah and compressor of the g sys to drive the input of your amp like you would in a traditional way. So the signal goes from the guitar to the g sys, out the insert to the amp, back out of the loop to the rerun of the g sys and there you add in time based fx. At the end of this chain the signal is then retuned to the amp’s loop return to be amplified and sent on to a cab. So that takes care of your basic 4 cable set up. In addition I have a graphic eq pedal in one of the other loops of the g sys. When I want a clean sound I turn off the insert, bypassing the amp’s preamp and all tone controls, turn on the loop with the graphic eq and run that signal that now has no preamp in the mix, into the return of the amp’s loop. Without the graphic eq it’s a completely raw and wide open signal. So the graphic eq gives me tone control and volume control and still gives me all the fx of the g system. Hope that makes sense.

    • @glguitarman
      @glguitarman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bhosterman So, the basic 4 cable method itself is allowing you to bypass the front of the amp, by simply turning off the loop (or send as it were) to the front of the amp. With that bypassed, it's going directly to the amp's FX loop return, then to the power amp, and output transformer, and finally to the speaker. Am I on the right track? I don't have a G system, but I do have access to a POD go, the simple 4 cable method is essentially the same, right? Sorry, I've always been an individual pedals into amp guy (except a short stint of toying with rack gear in the early 90s).

      Thanks for the question. It's actually very close. It's not a totally fair comparison because of all the mods on the big one. I actually used the Studio 800 last night on a big stage and it performed exactly as well as the 2204. I run in ears so I only turn my amps up enough to get feedback when I'm close. I'd say it's very punchy, at least enough for me. I play in an 80 metal tribute band so it does all those songs perfectly. What I like about these amps is the way they sound when you roll back your guitar volume knob. Very pleasing tone. All in all I have no complaints with the 800 Studio. FYI I brought the Bogner out too just to see how it performed in that environment. I hated it. Again with in ears I hear everything note I'm playing no mater where I am on stage and I was so miserable I swapped it out during a set break.

      Thanks for the kind words! I don't have much experience with drive pedals. I've always relied on amps with high gain and a compressor. For the past 12 years I have used some sort of multi processor like a Line 6 M13 or currently the TC Electronic G System. So when I chose a drive pedal I went with the most generic one. I still prefer amps that don't really need the extra gain and tone enhancements of a pedal. That's why I like Comp pedals. For me, they preserve the tone and allow me to use less gain but get the sustain of higher gain.

    Hey man, hoping you can help me out, trying to understand cleans on the SC20H. All demos I hear on low sensitivity are with single coils, and I'd be using an LP like you. I also hear the bright cap is bad until preamp is at least 1 o'clock. So with an LP in either neck or bridge position, low sensitivity, preamp at 1 o'clock... is it still clean? Or is it break up level at that point? JCM 800 is my favorite dirty tone and I would boost a SC20H with a SD-1 for Zakk tones but if I can't get a clean with humbuckers I'll go for a Hughes and Kettner at this volume level.

      I’m definitely late to the game when it comes to boosting an amp with a pedal. I’ve always relied on either the amp having enough gain or a comp pedal to get it there. I like comp pedals because they generally don’t color the tone. If you set it up right you can get exactly the same attack and relative initial gain but with longer lasting notes and not too much extra noise. The g system’s gate was way ahead of its time because it used the relatively low noise input of the guitar signal to control the overall output gate while still allowing the delays and reverbs to trial off. There are gate pedals now that do the same thing but it’s a lot cabling to get the same result.

    • @bhosterman
      @bhosterman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It held up but with all these 20watt amps they have limitations. Sheer volume. I play in a band with two guitarists and we both solo. We both rely on a volume boost from our TC Electronic G Systems to get above each other in the mix rather than rely on a sound man to figure out which one of us is taking the solo. This is where the 20 watt amps fall short. The closer you come to max volume the less available headroom you have left for a boost. They provide enough rhythm volume but they don’t provide enough headroom to get that 4-5db more for a solo. This also depends on the kind of music. We play in an 80s metal tribute band and everything is loud. Loud drums, loud bass and especially loud guitars. So to answer your question, yes and no. Depends on the relative volume of the band and if you like an amp operating at near max capacity.
