@Robbi rob LOL, an immigrant is a skilled worker. A worker who studied their whole life and when it was time to give back to the their country, they chose other country to serve. Well done. More videos on Europe and the rise nationalist parties would be very welcome!
I'm actually baffled by how relatively honest and not deceptively left leaning this video was in it's messaging. I'm sorry to say that a lot of this is quite inaccurate. To make this quick: a) France led the effort to adopt the Euro, Germany (chancellor Kohl) only accepted it as a concession for France to agree to a re-unified Germany. b) Merkel never was much of a leader to Europe, all of the previous chancellors (bar Kiesinger who was only in office for 4 years anyway) were much more integrated in the effort to push Europe forward. Merkel on the other hand was always seen as someone looking towards the USA rather than the EU and consequently you will find it hard to pinpoint any European inniciative she took on her own without outside circumstances forcing her to do something. c) Your grand coalition graphic is misleading as the CSU is a sister party to the CDU which is only active in Bavaria (where in turn there is no CDU), while the SPD is an independent party active in all 16 states (also their voter share is 4 times as big as the CSU as of yet - even larger in the past). Also Merkel did work in different coalitions, also with the FDP (right wing liberals) from 2009-2013 and tried to forge a coalition with Greens and FDP in 2017. Also many fault the 3 grand coalitions under Merkel for strengthening more extreme parties (previously we only ever had 1 grand coalition under Kiesinger in the late 60's). d) The german government advocated for drasticly different policies in Greece than in Germany. In Germany they increased public spending in the worst crisis years fully in line with Keynes and adopted austerity afterwards. In Greece they advocated for austerity straight away which crippled the greek domestic market and made the crisis even worse. e) Germany gave asylum to refugees, not migrants as you say, for gods sake, this is a stupid error. f) you totally omitted any talks on Schröder and the Agenda 2010 which is central when discussing Merkel. Schröder is much more to credit or to blame (depending on where you stand) for the current economic situation in Germany and the large low wage sector. Merkel didn't touch this but got a lot of credit for the economy, while the SPD slowly crumbled.

The environment is at the moment the most important topic. The CDU and the SPD, the so-called "Volksparteien" which means the biggest parties, losing a lot of voters every election. In Germany being in the goverment as a party is not good for the voting results in the next election. The biggest difference exist between youth and old people. Old people vote for right, youth for green.
@@phoradio1277 I can do that as a 15 year old German citizen. Angela Merkel and her party [CDU] are kinda hated right now in Germany because they don't do enough against global warming. Especially the young generation is against the old German parties in the parliament such as SPD or the CDU. A TH-camr called "Rezo" made an one hour video that is called "Die Zerstörung der CDU" you can translate to "The destruction of the CDU" in which he criticized the party and other parties of the German parliament such as the SPD and AfD. The Video got 12 million views very quickly and because it was a week before the EU-elections it had a big impact. It was all over German news channels and we even saw it in one of our politics lessons. it is kinda hard to explain everything that happend if you want you can do a bit of research because it was very interesting how a TH-camr changed a lot. And I think that the young generation isn't against the European Union because brings so much freedom you can work everywhere inside the EU and you have so much more freedom inside it. (Oh btw. They are showing only half of the EU member right there on the map at 0:55 idk why) there are just many things to change and that's what annoys many young Europeans. I hope my grammar wasn't too bad tho and this is what you asked for.
Thank you both for your replies I found the extremely interesting. If I may ask you both a question. It seems that you both care about cleaning up the environment. Do you not find it counter productive to want to clean up the environment and let in so many migrants? I am just really curious as to your take because it seems like you could have one or the other in my opinion. The reason that I hold that opinion is because here migrants normally bring their habits with them and just being honest they really seem to not care. I understand however, it wouldn't be at the top of my list when continually looking for food and avoiding drug violence.
@@phoradio1277 Another German here. When it comes to cleaning up the environment, the biggest issue right now (but not the only one) is CO2 emissions. Migrants, regardless of their habits, don't have a statistical impact on that compared to pretty much anyone of note. And even if they were to litter like it's a littering competition they would collectively still do less damage than, say, a major corporation that produces unrecyclable plastics in the first place. Many Green voters think that letting in those many refugees is one of the few good things Merkel actually did. They just disagree with most of her other (center-right) policies, and maybe with the amount of organization, oversight and support that went into managing all of those refugees.

Little detail adjustment at 2:30 The SPD and the CSU did not form the CDU. The CDU (Christian Democratic Union) is the party of Angela Merkel itself. The so called Christian Social Union (CSU) on the other hand is basically the same party but represented onyl in Bavaria (it's a bavarian identity and pride thing that lead to this outcome). So the union of the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Christian Democrats is called "Great Coalition"
I think the animation was more to represent how CDU, CSU and SPD are merging into the Grand Coalition, although it does look a bit as if they form the CDU. Also, I might add to your point that you often treat CDU and CSU as one entity in Germany, since they almost always work together in one parliamentary group and I think always are part of the same coalition, if they happen to form one with someone else. Then they are commonly referred to as just "The Union".

The EU as a whole has accepted less refugees than Lebanon, for example. Lebanon has the population of Rome, the EU is half a billion people and one of the world’s largest economies.
2:35 graph is very manipulative. Less than 5 percent point drop is presented as some huge drop, but it is even worse as this graph shows percentage of GDP which raised more than 37% in the same period. That means not only that government spending didn't drop, but actually raised by 23%
One usually presents data in that way when the percentages will always be much lower than 100. Like with unemployment. So they're not deviating from anything
Calm down, folks. If you would watch more carefully, you would notice that they just used an older EU map in the beginning, it's not wrong. Around 1:58 there's a description on the upper left corner: "Map of EU as of 2000" Later, around 4:33 there is a current and accurate EU map Berlin wall fell in 1989, correct - even though reunification was in 1990, they didn't state the year, so technically they weren't wrong again. Euro actually WAS introduced in 1999, although only as scriptual currency, cash followed in 2002, so they're right here too

I'm sorry to say that a lot of this is quite inaccurate. To make this quick:
a) France led the effort to adopt the Euro, Germany (chancellor Kohl) only accepted it as a concession for France to agree to a re-unified Germany.
b) Merkel never was much of a leader to Europe, all of the previous chancellors (bar Kiesinger who was only in office for 4 years anyway) were much more integrated in the effort to push Europe forward.

@@phoradio1277 In the former East Germany, the right party is now the strongest party while in West Germany the Green party is gaining voters, mainly from the youth. The environment is at the moment the most important topic. The CDU and the SPD, the so-called "Volksparteien" which means the biggest parties, losing a lot of voters every election. In Germany being in the goverment as a party is not good for the voting results in the next election. The biggest difference exist between youth and old people. It was all over German news channels and we even saw it in one of our politics lessons. it is kinda hard to explain everything that happend if you want you can do a bit of research because it was very interesting how a TH-camr changed a lot.

Yes of course...but the EU should be a polotical force in the world. But countries which care more about their nationalism than the well being of the European union derstroy the EU from inside. Nationalist countries and governments (Hungary, Poland, Italy, Austria for two years) are the reason why EU isn't strong any more. And because it isn't that strong the positive aspects of being in the EU get less powerful. And then there will be other countries which want to leave it. Zerebrat Eightyseven EU is controlled by Germany France and Italy and the state heads of the member countries. They give the direction of the EU. You could clearly see that in Greece.

Vox: Germany weathered the recession better than anyone in Europe
Norway: Hold my beer
They likely meant in the EU.
If I'm not mistaken, the video is in fact *never* about the whole of Europe, but about the EU or the Eurozone. And *Norway* is neither a member of the EU nor have the Euro as its currency. The term "Europe" is often used colloquially for the EU, which is obviously wrong, but this should be taken into consideration and a single statement (like the one you are referring to) should therefore not be taken so exactly 😉
@@vampireheart1987 It was a joke.

The SPD and the CSU did not form the CDU.

They reduced spending measured relative to revenue, which is what matters. A lot of it can probably be attributed to Schröder, but since the start of her chancellorship government profits have been steadily climbing all the way until today. The graph in the video shows that but it could have been more clear in the voiceover.
@@Lukas-wn5cx well, that's not what the video said. They could have said "the deficit shrunk during her tenure" even though that was arguably primarily for factors others than her policies. Gunther Schenk yes like I said, the voiceover was wrong on that point.

@@uvbe not really. They will probably lose more.
1) people in the party which like such statements will think they are faking it and go to a party to the right. Additionally they will think this way of thinking is right because the established parties are adopting it.

At least that happened with the csu.
But it is wrong to say that all members of (to stay in Germany) afd are like that. Most (presumably 40%-60%) are simply depressed with the current politics and the extreme part of the party (presumably 20%-40%) is only louder and grabbed the leadership.

Showing extraordinal talent in debate and foinding conclusion. Several laws being passed during her presidency, to increase the well-being of its people. Building the ground to several Peace-Treatys and trying to unite othe countries. Taking human rights seriously. The fact that she is respected and maybe feared from all powerful leaders all over the world. This is literally a video about her career and her achievements, why do you ask me?
soso endless immigration. Poor pensioners, though highest social expenditure. Putting the CDU far to the left. No discussion of relevant topics such as Exit of atomic energy, immigration policy, climate policy. Ideology determines daily politics in Germany ...
soso and since I guess you are a German as well as I am one. Bei allen Göttern in Valhalla, where did she pass laws that increase the „well-being“ of its people. With „its“ people I consider the German people and not the Orient...
Because she's as useless as Obama and Bill Clinton
I'm just here to tell you that literally no one in Germany uses this Merkel "emoji".
interesting thanks !

I love how Germany went from dominating Europe militarily to economically and politically
Many of the economic policies were good, the whole refugee crisis was handled very poorly.
Tobias Wilfert Apfels und Oranges
No amount of economic progress will wash away what was done to the women of Germany.
It was handled poorly by eastern europe, not from Merkel.
Leonhard Euler Elaborate
Leonhard Euler Eastern Europe held its borders and said they’re sovereign nations for their people. What’s bad about that?
Vox, you're displaying a very out-dated map of the EU in this video, which shows the constellation before Eastern countries joined about 15 years ago. That's kinda sad, tbh.
Nice catch.
Its about the states that joined when Merkel became chancellor
@@heinrichmirgrautsvordir6613 Dont bother explaining to people. People will always try and tear a hole in something when it goes against their principles. Liberal left love to do that. Detract and reshape words to suit their feelings when the facts kick them in the balls. (Non gender specific)
@@crediblemulk4638 are you kidding me?
the map is correct, look on the top left corner.
As an Eastern European I can say with conviction that Angela Merkel is one of the best leaders the world and especially Europe has ever seen.
@Rod OB are you mad?
@Pentagon1337 well it's the same someone that allowed millions of people a second chance at life
Eastern Europe in a few generations will be one of the few places in Europe which wont be overrun by immigrants.
Born and raised in Greece and 21yo,first i felt it and then i learned it...good job for the video!

They should be. They are much more honest.

5:50 both of the graphs show a significant decline BEFORE the cologne attacks not after.
cologne attacks weren't the only event during the period - rather the climax?
@@KenjiVdusc yeah there were a few rightwing atacks on Immigrants
That is because Merkel's stand on immigration was harshly criticized from the beginning. PEGIDA ("Patriotic Europeans Against Islamisation of the Occident") started a huge wave of protests in 2014. But at the same time, many Germans were still openly welcoming their new neighbors. That began to change around the time of the attacks in Cologne, sadly.
