Sam!! Thanks so much for this breakdown. It was fun to relive this through someone else being a few years removed from it. Love your content and thanks for sharing your knowledge of voice with us:)
I enjoy listening to Joshua's singing so much that his voice actually improves my whole day. I don't know whether I'm more envious of the voice or the biceps. Many thanks from the U.K.
Man, Joshua! Do you have it all or what?! Keep up your wonderful work because we inquiring minds want to know and to experience superlative talent such as yours.
Aside from his singing...he has SUCH range...If you ever have time to look at his resume, he's done every type of show...i would kill to have no one put me in a box, he truly can do it all!
I LOVE that you drew attention to how we could hear how he physically expressed his emotions. As a musical theatre teacher I'm always drilling that into my students; it's about SO much more than how you song the notes. When he sang "it takes talent to do that well" I was delighted because I felt it to my core. Why? Because HE did.
Joshua Henry is an absolute chameleon, the way he can flip from his incredible legit voice to being wonderfully soulful and great at contemporary pieces like The Wrong Man too. An insane performer
You know even though i know how chameleon is actually pronounced and how its spelt I always say it strangely when reading it and this time was no different took me a good 10 seconds to work it out 😂
I've never heard of this singer, but I'm sure glad you introduced him. I grew up on R&H musicals, listening to John Raitt and Gordon MacRae as Billy. Henry also reminds me of the sound of the male lead in South Pacific. He's got an undeniable warmth to his voice that is enchanting. No doubt that YT will have a treasure trove of his music. Can't wait to explore what he's done. Thank you, Sam, from Oklahoma.
His voice reminds me of Gordon Macrae’s. Usually I have trouble connecting with male broadway performers but with Joshua I get that same power and passion.
Just wanted to say that I love your channel and have been commenting on every video to help with the yt algorithm. Hope more people are seeing your videos, since they are so useful.
Hi Sam. This was the first time I have had the pleasure of watching one of your videos, but it won't be the last! I, too, love Joshua Henry - my God what a voice, what a perfect choice for this role - you can feel the commitment in his voice to protect his little girl and the love he would have for his little boy. He doesn't miss a thing in conveying warmth and love. Wow! and - he's not very ugly either! LOL
Diana Ankudinova is a young performer who shocks us with her pleasant voice and takes us into the abyss of events!!! Diana Ankudinova is unique and inimitable, goosebumps from her voice!=)))) Diana sings as if she lives in the song! The soul freezes or opens with Diana's voice.=))))))) I am a musician who has been with music for years, and believe me, I have not heard such a tone in all these past years. 1000000%!!!😁🔥🔥🔥🎤🎤🎤🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶💖💖💖
Thank you for introducing me to this singer. He has an incredible instrument and the talent to use it well. He's such a good performer. I could listen to him sing all day! Going to go check out more.
I know nothing about music or singing. When u talk about doing whatever with the vowels I have no idea what u r talking about but I can watch u for hours! Idk why!! I just adore u!!
Been revisiting Rodgers & Hammerstein recently. Love this revival of Carousel! Joshua Henry and Jessie Mueller are both amazing and that show just has the best music. Soliloquy especially was groundbreaking at the time. Great video!
I had the luck of being introduced to Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr in Hamilton in Chicago, and have loved him ever since. He lit up the stage - definitely the star of the production. (dare I say I liked his better than Leslie Odom's performance) The fact that he could switch between that role and something much more traditional/classical like this role astounds me. And that he sounds like a bass/baritone AND can sing in a tenor's range. What a gift!
He played Jake in “Porgy in Bess” with Audra Mc Donald as Bess and Norm Lewis as Porgy. Joshua would be great as Porgy I agree, but Jake is a strong character and vocally challenging as well. It was in the recent production in which it was presented as a musical rather than an opera. The original is the opera with recitatives and running just over 3 hrs, which I personally prefer as the story should be presented, but I could understand some reasons why certain people would prefer the more abridged musical version. I own all the dozen recordings of “Carousel” out there and it’s my favorite musical, the favorite of Richard Rodgers too, and I didn’t see the revival with Joshua but from the recordings and videos I’ve realized he was very strong vocally in the role. In Sept 2024 there is going to be a new recording of all the show’s songs and musical sections (complete, finally, at 107 mins.) conducted by the great John Wilson. 🎠🎪
What a shame to miss out on such a voice and characterization because of social/racial/political mumbo jumbo and all that nonsense. I never knew I needed to hear Joshua Henry's Soliloquy, but boy did I!
I'm 76 and grew up with Goleta, Andrews and the rest . They were great but I always felt something wqs missing . THIS was missing . This kind of gorgeous voice which can act as well as sing. I taught Music and Language Arts for 27 years..I created some electives about the American Musical Theater and another about the American Dramatic Theater. If I were still teaching I would DEFINITELY include this man's and also Jason Donica. Huge ranges, huge power and it seems huge reserves of power underneath the singing. I love the way this man goes from speech to singing and there is no difference in tamber or the quality and depth of the sound..We have really reached a Golden Age with these two men singing in shows..
I don't like Carousel as far as musicals go (it's not the problematic stuff because, hey, that's real life. the story itself is just not anything special) but Joshua Henry is a gift. Happily would listen to him sing the 2005 white pages.
Hi Sam! I know you’ve already done a couple of Jinjer reactions, but they just released a one-take vocal performance video for the one year anniversary of their song Judgement (& Punishment) and I think you might find it really interesting. But also, just keep making stuff, your videos are really fun and informative 💚
Love this video! Never heard of Joshua Henry before and I loved every bit of this. Would LOVE to see you analyze Justin Bonitz of Tallah. He's one of the most versatile and exciting performers in my opinion :D
My biggest issue with carousel is that it very much feels like the music and the book are telling completely different stories. Like the songs are beautiful and portray billy as a very complex character who makes some bad choices but is trying to be good while the actual spoken scenes are just him being a terrible person. It just doesn't mesh well, imo. BUT I will always love the music and will take any opportunity to see it just to hear the score
That’s an interesting observation on the character, but there are many clues during the story that offer insight into his more sensitive and even philosophical side. Here are examples: Julie references that Billy enjoys the smell of flowers (while someone else like Mr Snow by contrast would be more industrious and ambitious to plant and cultivate them), and we’ve also seen Billy’s awareness of nature as with the wind and the sea in “If I Loved You”, …we see Billy cavorting with Jigger but mentioning how a “chrysanthemum sprout” would come out of a whale…Julie’s decree that Billy could turn gentle and thoughtful when listening to the music from the carousel which he dearly misses…Billy’s reflecting on how he would eventually be judged by God…his desire to give the star, a somewhat spiritual gift to the daughter he had never previously met….and many other examples. The fact that Julie sees charm and tenderness behind the false bravado is a key to the fact that we must be able to do it also, and you’re right that he’s at his most appealing during the musical sections, but that was the whole motivation for Rodgers and Hammerstein to adapt the somewhat unsympathetic character in “Liliom” into a more two-toned personality and they chose to do it mostly through the aid of song. One of Billy’s unfortunate traits is that he’s already been judged unfairly by the community as somewhat of an outsider with a previous bad reputation, and he never really gets to express even musically with the community and even when singing alongside Julie they never actually are in voice together. We have to feel a certain sympathy for all the characters in the musical (and they all have their flaws but admirable traits as well). It was a real challenge for the composers to try to rise above the character’s bad traits and try to present him as one who would learn from his actions and seek repentance, forgiveness, love and ultimately acceptance in a judgmental community, a challenging relationship, and complex world! 🎠🎪
First time I hear him, and wow he has so much energy! And such ease in expressing himself, truly a treat. Thank you! Id love it if you could react to Lara Fabian's Caruso, beautiful rendition, especially the one where she's in a black dress, a little younger, such emotional poweeeer!!
It's nice to see the reaction of a professional. Are you sure. You can't help but be interested in young, unique performers. Despite her young age, she has a lot of fans and not only in Russia. I ask you to pay attention to it and make a reaction. Her name is Diana Ankudinova.

*Diana* *Ankudinova* has the rarest voice at this age - *contralto* ! 💎💎💎🔥🔥🔥👏👍 On stage, she is not only a singer, but also a talented actress! Any of her songs performed on the project "You are Super" Russia ("Ты Супер!", "НТВ" - channel) is a performance!
Hi Sam, love your reactions, and your honest analysis, which makes you stand out from others doing similar videos. Please could you react and analyse Gabriel Henrique singing ‘Oh Happy Day’.. thank you! ❤️
Hi Sam, great video once again, would love to see a similar video with Leona Lewis's Bridge over troubled water at the Royal Albert Hall in 2019. Her voice changed so much but still so great, would love to hear your reaction/analysis on her
Hey Sam. Could you please make a video analyzing Seu Jorge e Ana Carolina - É isso ai (The Blower’s Daughter). Seu Jorge is one of my favorite brazilian singers and I would like to understand his technique to sing high notes with a dark and rasp tone.
Hey Sam! I was wondering... Can you talk about Adele, maybe do an analysis on her voice? I have been hearing a lot about her "audible breath" and how that messed up her voice and created problems with the cords? IDK Maybe some other singer that does that? I like Bjork a lot,and I think she used to do that too,but has also had voice issues. Please? Pretty please? Thanks!
Please help me to guys vote for this artist she is a phenominal vocalist and I know that Sam would immediately fall in love with her. Faouzia Performing her stripped version of Tears of Golds. Please guys help me
Please react to Sheléa, she’s not a very well known singer but the BEST singer I’ve heard in a long time. She played one Dorinda in the Clark Sisters movie 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Hey mate!! Have you seen Cynthia Erivo singing I'm Here in The Colour Purple? I've been watching it over and over and I'd love to hear your opinion on her performance
That’s no coincidence-Joshua did a great job …both Billy and Gaston are strong baritone roles with complex characterizations. Richard White was Gaston in the original animated feature but prior to that he had also portrayed Billy in a production of “Carousel”. 🎠🎪
⭐Hello! ⭐ Please pay attention to Diana Ankudinova. She sings beautifully-listen to her songs, watch her performances -"Wicked Game", "Human", "Rechenka" - and you will be pleasantly surprised. I'm sure you'll like it⭐🎵🎵🎵
Please react to singer Kim Jaehwan who is a rising, well loved singer in korea right now for her versatility! You can start with Don't Touch Me by Kim Jaehwan from the King of Masked singer where he almost beat the reign king!

Joshua Henry is one of my all time favorites by far
I saw this live on Broadway and that final note was UNREAL, he had a standing ovation halfway through it

Dear Sam,
I love how articulate you are.
Your analysis is so spot-on and detailed, esp. with regard to vowel placement. I learned so much in just a few minutes. You are a great teacher.
His voice reminds me of Gordon Macrae’s. Usually I have trouble connecting with male broadway performers but with Joshua I get that same power and passion.
I thought so too - so much like Gordon MacRae!

Yay! Yet an other amazing video! Thank you for the analysis Sam. I loved it.
I saw him in 2017 when Hamilton was in LA and by gawd this man is a gem. 10/10.
Joshua is so incredibly talented... but he's also just a real, kind, great person to his core.
He's also releasing an album!!

I played for one of his Bachelor's recitals from the University of Miami and am thrilled to see his success on Broadway.
I feel like the role was made for him, he is so amazing
I used some of your tips for vowel shape/dropping my jaw today for a recording and I think it helped! I hope one day I can afford to take lessons 🤞
Really enjoyed this video.
As I sad, Sam is an instaclick. Omg, that man has such a beautiful voice!
His voice is so rich. Warm like you said. Like a lava cake. Just rich and decadent.
He would be incredible as Porgy, in (Porgy and Bess) musical.
