ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.
ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CAROUSEL
Set in a small New England factory town, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s timeless musical Carousel describes the tragic romance between a troubled carnival barker and the young woman who gives up everything for him. Elevated to an epic scale with a sweeping musical score that features some of the most beloved numbers in the American songbook, and incandescent ballet sequences, this story of passion, loss, and redemption introduced Broadway to a new manner of musical drama and would captivate theatergoers for generations to come.

his voice is just so stunning people don’t sing like this anymore
I do :)
because you are hearing him tell the story. He's not really singing, he is "talking" in his mind. You think his is singing, but the actor knows his job is to voice his character's emotional state, not "sing". His performance is by far more interesting because of that..
You should be in the WINGS, 8 TIMES A WEEK, HEARING HIM CLOSE UP!
I REMEMBER WORKING WITH HIM ON THE FIRST NATIONAL TOUR OF THE MUSICAL HAMILTON, HE PLAYED BURR!
HE AND I WOULD BE IN THE WINGS TALKING ABOUT THIS VERY MUSICAL NUMBER!, AND HOW MUCH HE WOULD BRING TO IT, SINCE HE HAD JUST HAD A BABY!
HE'S A BRILLIANT TALENT! WE WILL SEE MIRE OF HIM! KEEP ON THE LOOK OUT FOR HIM!.
What? Of course they do. Go see some opera.
@@DeborahBoily What are you even talking about. He is really singing.
I was waiting to see how he dealt with the original lyrics ("pink and white as peaches and cream). I'm a 75-year-old African-American and I loved this "Soliloquy" so much, that I sang it in front of my high school Music Appreciation class, never thinking about the oddity of having a "pink and white" little girl. Oddly enough, he left the "pink and white" in for the little boys.
This is just wonderful. I didn’t think musical theatre actors could sing like this anymore ie in similar style to the likes of Gordon Macrae. But Joshua Henry sounds like a singer from the Rogers & Hammerstein golden age. He is outstanding.
There are a few who can sing like this. Les Misérables is one good example. Go see the play in person. Highly recommend!
Mr Henry is amazing. To hear more singing of this quality, I suggest you attend the opera when you can.
@@kalihensley-garrison6282 yea, when people learn to stop being so selfish and do their part in responsibility to help get this COVID under control. We all like to see things in person again and kids back in school again. But some people are just pushing back on the solutions that are going to get us out of this mess. Viruses do not know liberty and privacy. They only know how to infect and it’s us who have to wear the mask and get vaccinated so it has very little room for hosts to find and very little room to mutate and become another variant that could be even more dangerous
I totally agree!
I totally agree
Dang this man's voice just gives me chills. I am SO tired of that generic, heartless, "powerhouse" belting, nasally, squeaky, breathy musical theatre voice that has come to be the norm. Please give me back the wholesome quality timeless voices like these.
Did you like Hamilton's vocals?
You need to go to the opera
@@FlowersInHisHair nah singing in musical theatre just needs to get better
He is amazing.
Yes! I want more warm baritones and sopranos again
What great diction! You can understand every single word while still staying perfectly in character. What an accomplishment.
Small point but this is the first time I realized it was "with a hammer, a'hammerin' spikes" and not "with a hammer, a hammer, and spikes."
Yes he’s wonderful. BUT I could understand every syllable in the great wonderful original version by John Raitt
Joshua Henry is one of the most underrated actors. He is so versatile & his Billy Bigelow is one of my favorite performances I’ve ever seen
How is he UNDERRATED. what does that actually mean... I see that term applied to so many FINE ENTERTAINERS It takes time to become a MEGA STAR.. but he certainly isnt underrated
@@r4b32t11 when I say he is underrated, I mean that when people usually talk about theatre performers, he is not one of the ones people talk about. People tend to talk about the more well known actors over someone like Joshua Henry. I have seen him in several shows now and every time he blows me away with his performance. He can easily go from playing a classic like Billy Bigelow to playing Aaron Burr or Favorite Son in "American Idiot". So yes, with someone as versatile and talented as he is- I do believe he is underrated. He's been steadily performing for years & I can't wait for the day the world recognizes his talent.
@@jessicadavies5286 I understand what you mean, I respect your opinion... He is incredibly talented... Still young he will soar to the top
This role made Joshua step up his game as a Broadway entertainer. Love his version of the song
Indeed. I know he adores performing Jazz but the truth of the matter is that his somewhat operatic voice he uses for music like this sets him apart from most other musical singers. This style of music shows his voice off much better than the jazz I have heard him sing. He has a voice that is instantly recognizable due to its color and timbre.
@@Yves_Ka Totally agree he should try to explore more this style. Lucky you that can listen to him live! I live out of the USA unfortunately. I would like to see him as a Phantom one day. He is also a very skillful actor, in my opinion. :D
Not me watching the last 60 seconds on repeat for an entire half hour 🤦♀️ but for real……what an incredible voice my lord
As Sondheim said, “This is a singer with a capital S”
I count myself lucky to have seen this performance on stage. My eyes were about starting out of my head, and my jaw was on the floor. Joshua Henry's storytelling is beautiful in this vid, but what I remember from the live performance was his huge energy.
Ditto - he was superb. He seems such a warm positive person, and then there are the looks and on top of that a magnificent voice.
He tells the story like no other. And he sings the living hell out of it, too! 👏🏼
For me, the standard for this song was set by John Raitt in the original broadway cast (1945). No one came close, Joshual Henry not only came close -- he absolutely surpassed it. O. M. G. I just cried.
I don’t know about surpassed, but definitely matched. Matched in power, beauty, richness and tone. Surpassed in emotional depth, absolutely. But then there’s that last note where John Raitt’s voice just flies up a couple of octaves (well, that’s what it feels like anyway) that leaves me stunned every time. Joshua Henry doesn’t do that, but his last note still soars and packs a wallop. I cried, too. I mean no disrespect by disputing whether or not he surpasses John Raitt. It’s a quibble, really. He is absolutely one of the best, no doubt. Stunning.
He is the best Billy Bigelow I’ve watched. He adds so much nuance and emotion that was always needed in the piece that no other actor who portrayed this role has executed successfully. Every other actor who played Billy can be seen struggling with the song itself hence the quality of acting is absent. Joshua Henry is the real definition of triple threat; does not sacrifice one element over the other.
Well, it's never been sung like this before--with such musical prowess, sheer virtuosity, and convincing emotion. Just bowled me over. Only once in a blue moon does God reach down and touch somebody like this and give them this kind of extraordinary talent.
I saw a clip of this on TikTok. Fell in love with the words, the delivery, his voice; the whole nine. On a whim, I came to watch the entire performance. I originally assumed the words were from the POV of a man talking a romantic love. Learning this last bit was about his potential daughter just moved me even more! Wow! 🥹🥹🥹 Brava!
HOLY SHIT. This is stunning. I'm so glad we get revivals of classic musicals where the singing really matters. His voice is breathtaking.
how do u sing like this for seven minutes without dying
I came here after seeing this on Tiktok, and it was AMAZING. And now I'm obsessed and in love. This is just so amazing, the voice is just-- no words to describe! It's climbing up a hill to gaze at the sun rise with the wind blowing around you on a spring day. That's the only way I can describe it.
I’m normally not a fan of slower and operatic songs with an old timer feel, but Joshua is so stunning this might be the best thing I have ever seen. I have been to near a dozen Broadway shows live, and yet this just floors me. How can a man have so much talent in both acting and singing?
Loved it! (Snap your fingers!)
absolutely gorgeous and shattering--a filmed recording session final take that focuses on work-lights singer's face and hands and creates an unforgettable theater performance...i don't want to be unfair, but gordon on the beach isn't what i'll now always hear and see...
It's terrific to have this intimate recording of Joshua Henry performing Solioquy. I can't believe that I almost missed this revival. I'll never forget its many beautiful moments.
Mr Henry comes to this role with an extensive background of brilliant musical performances. What a gentleman. Rodgers and Hammerstein would be thrilled. Mr Raitt and MacCrae would applaud loudly as breed. I’ve been a huge fan throughout his illustrious career. Bravo. I hope he keeps doing musicals. Phenomenonal.
Amazing!!! What a talent!!!!
The finale to this number is legendary! Josh does the role such justice.
Goose bumps
Holy hell. What a voice!
Joshua Henry’s voice is BEAUTIFUL! This is my first time hearing him, and I’m in love.
I’d also like to give a shoutout to the conductor who is mouthing the words as he conducts.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!
I CAN IMAGINE THE OVATION HE GOT PERFORMING THIS LIVE.
Great! A true singer - sans nasal qualities. Is the whole show available on TH-cam. I'd buy this on CD and DVD, if available.
No one has ever been able to come close to what Gordon MacRae did with his voice and this song. But this man…holy son of a gun…you are right there with him. This was perfection.
Great voice, interesting interpretation. The bass baritone flavor is a fascinating contrast to John Raitt's original version -- which I was lucky enough to hear in person in the 60s -- which gives a very baritenor sound to the piece
I felt that this was done to death... like If I Were Rich Man ... so very hard to breathe new life into it but Joshua Henry made be cry... brilliant performance and I love how the conductor/musical director is living every moment.. stupendous
Saw him in Carousel last summer and he was astounding! Stole the show from 4 other Tony nominated performers! His version of this song stands up to any and all previous versions! Absolutely incredible voice!
Man the ending of this song is insane
You honestly cannot listen and watch this man without smiling! This kind of gift has been lost, until now! What a voice! (Sigh!)
Joshua Henry delivers on every note. Virtuoso.
I could watch this video a million times and it wouldn't be enough. Joshua Henry is magnificent and this performance is magical. What a true talent!
So much resonance in his voice.
The amount of acting as he sings is so gorgeous! And he doesn't drop a note! He's just soooo stunning. His voice is one of the absolute best in the business. I'm so glad the BatB Anniversary brought him to a wider stage and people are waking up from sleeping on him! I can't wait to see what he does next.
I'm a huge fan of Gordon Macrae's portrayal of Billy, but Joshua just nails this song! He's so fun to listen to - glad I stumbled onto this!
This is the best thing I've ever heard.
Only Murders in the Building, thumb up!
I’m not sure why, but when I revisit this song it always brings a tear to my eye.
No idea this existed- stumbled across it. Unbelievable! Incredible! He beats the shit out of this song and then delivers a perfectly cut diamond on a platinum tray, presented by a unblemished virgin.
Wow. This is beyond anything I'm familiar with. A whole different listening experience.
What a VOICE !!! God Bless him !!!
This song gets me every single time. I thought for sure I was going to have a son. I am the more masculine partner in a lesbian family and thought I knew how it would be. But when my only child turned out to be a girl, I melted and it was over. I try to be my best for her and give her everything. Yes...ribbons in her hair, fed and clothed in the best that money can buy. My daughter softened me and has made me a sappy mess!
I bet Joshua would sound amazing in so many musicals like show seven brides for seven brides for seven brothers. I can just imagine hearing him singing bless your beautiful hide or old man river from showboat.
I'm having as much fun watching this as he is performing it.
Finally!! A beauty and the beast Gaston who can sing!!!! The original dude was awesome. But no one since him has been able to pull it off.
Speechless. 😍😍
Amazing performance! This blew me away - I didn't know people sang like this anymore. Truly phenomenal!
Jushua Henry is simply incredible! I'm amazed everytime I hear his voice
opera meet pops, gives birth to the highest art. singing and acting up a storm.
He makes it look almost easy. Like he's got even more power than what he's using .
What a glorious voice, absolutely magnificent and heart-stoppingly beautiful.
What a fabulous voice, what I would have given for a voice like that when I played Billy Bigalow back in the 80's. Such happy memories for me.
Carousel was my favourite childhood musical for holiday season. I bought DVD and can't watch without crying. This guys voice tells the story so beautifully. Stunning ❤
one of the best rendition of this song ever...he is outstanding!!!
I always cry when I hear this number, and this rendition was no exception. Bravo.
my GOD
Just fantastic! Made me cry .... my son is nw 23 ... I am so proud of him !!!
OMG! ! The best voice I’ve ever heard. Just beautiful! What a gift!!
How has this only got 34 views??? Wonderful rendition
And only has two comments ? :)
Carousel is the best work of Rodgers & Hammerstein I believe, quintessentially the American Dream and the bigger-picture and spiritual Meaning of Life. Discerning people can appreciate great art like this entire play's collection of music and can share it with others as often as possible, to help others become discerning also in their tastes for the Arts and entertainment. Then there will be many thousands of views of this TH-cam video, deservedly so. The 1956 film Carousel was very beautiful, by the way. It-all always makes me cry with happiness. It's all part of a true masterpiece. Share, share, share.
Divine singer, spine tingling rendition even more so with such glorious voice
hear the resemblance of joshua and brian stokes mitchell's voice. both beautiful.
I was so glad to have seen his performance live. Absolutely amazing. I wish I could watch it again. Can't find it anywhere, unfortunately.
His vocals are so beautifully effortless. You really don’t hear this sort of quality performers anymore.
no one has ever served this many truthful acting beats...
What a wonderful voice.
So powerful and emotional . I think best version ever - including movie💯❤
Who would thumbs down this this is Incredible . This man is beautiful and so talented ! His tone is perfect !!
I need Joshua to play the Phantom like YESTERDAY
Those last 60 seconds 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
This is incredible, straight up brilliance. Wow
WHAT AN EXCEPTIONAL VOICE! JUST AMAZING!
Fabulous, what a performance. I love his voice, he's in the same league as the Hollywood greats...Gorden & Howard. Can't wait to see more of him, his voice is a new love for sure 💕
What a beautiful voice for this phenomenal song!
Absolutely incredible. Chills and tears. What an amazing voice on this man and a top notch production
I'm sobbing.
His voice is so beautiful! I love this song even more!
I'm not sure I agree with the interpretation, but he has a fine voices and uses it well. I shall keep an ear out for more.
Mr. Joshua Henry is amazing
Wow, just wow.
Absolutely captivating. Love hearing you sing and your communication through the song is perfection!
Stunning performance!!! 😍👏
This is my emotional support video. Whenever I want to feel moved and inspired, I come here. My other one is Lea Salonga’s audition video for Ms Saigon when she’s learning sun and moon. Highly recommend.
💯 PERFECTION!!! I loved & enjoyed this sooo much. The perfect Billy Bigelow❣️❣️❣️
I watch this every day lol
I stil do!!!
I am a fan 100x over! Wow!
Absolutely magnificent!
When I am challenged about the presence of higher power, overwhelming abundance, shining glory, astounding beauty, art of flawless caliber, character/ energy/ talent/ passion that pushes beyond what's thought possible it is performances like this created by artists like this that come to mind and there can simply be no denying the presence of blinding beauty, the potential of humanity connecting with spirit... and graceful love beyond all understanding. 💓
Just wonderful
Henry thoroughly brings out the dad's issues undermining so much of this. ❤
Reminds me of the young Brian Stokes-Mitchell! Bravo!!!
Well, this is just phenomenal. I thought no one could surpass Gordon MacRae's version of this piece, which remains the benchmark (with the possible exception of full-bore operatic performances by singers like Bryn Terfel and Thomas Hampson), but Henry's performance is stupendous in every way. Bravo!
Stunning. Beautiful.
This is brilliant. Wow, the interpretation, the diction, the characterization--I love this show and Henry as this Billy Bigelow. I am so touched by this rendition and I will remember this forever. Thank you!
Brilliant, my dad loved this
wow ,this may be the best of all the renditions
