And the dancing in that movie was so great it's been used in commercials, comedies & when she pulls the water down on the chair..well, everyone knows it's from flash dance.
I was in the Air Force where I learned electronic repair and when I got out I worked field service repairing medical devices. At one hospital I met a very trim, average sized female respiratory therapist who had been in the Navy. She had one of the rarest jobs, imo, for a woman due to the absolute difficulty and weight of the job in the Navy. She was a deep sea diver. We're talking the lead boots, full suit and heavy round breathing apparatus. When I was in the A.F. it was just starting to put women in "non-traditional" fields, especially in maintenance. It blew my mind what she did in the Navy. You would be surprised how many women have held, or currently hold, "non-traditional" jobs. Women got their foot in the door due to the shortage of men during WWII. It was slow to build momentum after the war ended, but it was the start.
Women can do every job. I worked at the power plant in the coal yard. Tieing off the barges on the river. Lubricating the conveyor belt rollers in 8 story building. Etc. yes we can.
My sister has been a welder for almost 30 years. She assembles Semi Trucks at Wabash National. She is very pretty and is good at her job. Yes she gets flirted with a lot even though she just turned 60 this year. It's rare to see women in certain jobs, but definitely doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
She wasn't a steel worker, she was a welder. The whole movie was about her wanting to be a dancer and study at NY's famous dance academy. The final dance scenes were her at her audition to be accepted in... which, of course, she made it. Watch the movie, son.
This movie is set in Pittsburgh PA. The main character is a young woman who works in a steel mill during the day and dances in clubs during the night. She ends up auditioning for a fancy dance school/troupe . Also, she abd the mill owner fall in love. The actress is Jennifer Beal ( not sure of the spelling) There were several songs from the soundtrack that became popular
This song was competing with Billy Jean and Beat it by Michael Jackson on the charts in 1983. This song spent 5 weeks at #1 and won the Oscar for Best original song
I have worked in steel mills..Gas Refineries, chemical plants, Mills, copper mines etc..Traveled the country....Yes I am skilled in Refractory, Chrmical and masonry liners, to protect from high heat and caustic materials...For 31 years...
Flashdance! When this movie came out it inspired me to want to live in an old warehouse. It's such a good movie. Inspires you to want to reach for your dreams. The character in the movie was not a stripper. She was just a dancer. The actress Jennifer Beals is still such an attractive woman.
Irene Cara also sang the theme song of FAME, as well as starred in the movie. RIP Irene😢 Her song OUT HERE ON MY OWN is absolutely beautiful! So talented... I cried when she unexpectedly passed. This song is from the movie Flashdance. Great movie!!! So many memories from my youth. 😢😊
My sister in the early 80s went to work as a secretary in a mining company and got bored and learned to drive the 40 ton ore hauling trucks instead.😂 she's in her 70s and still hikes and bikes and travels around the country.
The character's name is Alex Owens, an aspiring ballerina who is a welder by day and exotic dancer by night. Her goal is to be accepted in the prestigious Pittsburgh Conservatory of Dance and Repertory. The actress was Jennifer Beals, the singer was Irene Cara, and the dancer(s) were body doubles, the main one being uncredited French actress Marine Jahan.
Flashdance was a very successful romantic drama from 1983. The movie, set in Pittsburgh, features Jennifer Beals as Alex Owens, a welder by day, dancer by night. Flashdance was one of the first films to use music videos for promotion. So, the music video you watched for the title song "Fashdance.... What a Feeling)" was basically created by editing scenes together from the movie. Indeed, the video features the major dance sequence from the film, which was apparently the primary driver of the leg warmers trend of the '80s! While Irene Cara sings the title song, she does not appear in the movie, even though she was an accomplished dancer who not only sang the title song to the 1980 hit movie "Fame", but also starred in the film as an aspiring dancer. In the movie Falshdance, Jennifer Beals did perform some of her character's dance numbers herself, but other dancers were used for the more complex moves. Marine Jahan was Jennifer Beals' body double for the dancing scenes, but she was kept hidden from the press because the filmmakers did not want to "ruin the illusion." Alex's leap through the air in the audition scene was done by gymnast Sharon Shapiro. For the movie’s final scene, Alex performs a complicated routine featuring a break dancing move called the whip backspin. It was so difficult that neither one of Jennifer Beals’ body doubles could do it, so producers called on the then-16-year-old Richard “Crazy Legs” Colón, who, alongside his break dancing group the Rock Steady Crew, had already made a short appearance in the movie. He donned a wig, shaved his peach-fuzz moustache, squeezed into a leotard (no taping or tucking) and stepped to the beat. As a consequence, Jennifer Beals' leotard suddenly develops a curious bulge, clearly visable in a particularly intimate area.😅 Btw, in addtion to the US #1 hit title song by Irene Cara, the Flashdance movie and soundtrack features another US #1 hit - "Maniac" by Michael Sembello. Well worth checking out also!
I always thought "Gloria" by Laura Branigan was on the soundtrack as well, but apparently only "Imagination" was (thank you Google) even though "Gloria" was in the movie. "Imagination" is a good song, but "Gloria" is in a completely different league.
You should watch the movie, it's pretty good. I started working on cars when I was 13, had to stand on a concrete block to reach the points and plugs. I preferred that to dancing!
Jennifer Beals was the actress, most of the dance scenes were performed by an uncredited French actress Marine Jahan. Irene was a great singer and actress herself-check out the film and soundtrack "Fame"🕯
The chair scene with the water splash is iconic. It's still referenced in various media, like on an episode of The Office. This movie set the styles for a while. A lot of women my age still cut the neck out of a t-shirt or sweatshirt. No, that's not Irene Cara. The actress is Jennifer Beals, there's a double doing the dancing, but I've forgotten her name.
Irene Cara was an amazing singer and songwriter, RIP. Fame songs, “Fame,” “Out Here on My Own,” video must-watches. The movie “Fame” was moving, and she even co-starred. This movie, “Flashdance,” was another 80’s movie, and starred Jennifer Beals, female welder, trying to make her ballet dreams come true.
My son and I became friends with a girl in his welding class. They both went on to work at Bath Iron Works in Maine building ships for the Navy. She is maybe 4 foot 11 about 100 lbs. They send her in to the areas that most men can't fit into, and she is a world class welder!!
My friend in high school said, "you have got to see this movie.. I'm in love." The song was actually written for the movie. A song to go with it would be maniac, as she's a maniac on the floor. That was one of the best scenes in the movie for us high school guys. Yes, I have the VHS, the DVD, and the LP. Some people, being very emotional, will cry at the end of the movie.. seeing her achieve her dream.
Maybe THE most iconic song of the 80s. It was BIG. Probably because of the video/the dance from the movie...so many things have spoofed or parodied this scene.
I was a female steel worker, ironworkers union. I'm 5'3" 130lbs. Carried rebar with the men, can climb a column, bolt up, weld. There wasn't alot of us in our union but a few and each yr we get more and more
The blond, dancer, Cynthia Rhodes, is also a singer, she is or was married to Richard marx, and she and her band( Animotion), released an 😍 amazing album! Her videos to the songs/ singles : calling it 💕 love, and " room to move", should be available on youtube.
I was 14 when this movie came out me and my friends saw it 10 times in theaters. This song was huge I love her song Fame from the movie she was in also.
Jennifer Beale who played the young steel worker was 18 when she made this film and then quit Hollywood to go to Yale and study American literature. She later became known for embracing her bi-racial heritage and starred in TV's "The L Word."
She's a welder. a HUGE part of my formative years. All the girls we're dressing like her (she 'Alex' lead role) had every teenager girl waring off-the-shoulder sweatshirts. Truly a classic movie if there ever was one.
There are a couple female mechanics on TH-cam that will make you melt. And yes, there are female steel workers and certified welders abound. Don't get too far down that track, my friend. 😉 You need to watch the whole "Flash dance" movie. Trust me. And Irene Cara stared in "Fame."
The girl grinds at the factory, performs at the strip club, has dreams of making it as a ballet dancer and strives to be accepted to move up to being a real dancer! Jennifer Beals was the actress, Irene Cara is the singer for the soundtrack! You're Mamma was referring to the classic song, "Goodnight, Irene" by the Huddie Lead Belly" Ledbetter from 1933, but made famous in 1950 by the Weavers, which is the version I grew up hearing from my Mom's LP collection from Reader's Digest Greatest Hits.
Irene Cara actress / singer did play a role in the movie Fame, which she also sang the title track to. Both Fame and What a Feeling were huge hits and total bangers. They were both motivational feel-good songs that you couldn't help but Jam to wherever you were
Irene Cara also played the part of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame. She also sang the song Fame it was her debut single. What a feeling always seems to makes it into the top 100 pop songs or many of the music channels and radio stations.
I was a maintenance mechanic for 10 years while I attended school at night. I know many female electricians, welders, carpenters and one plumber. You’ve got to get a little more exposure to progressive locations. 😂
A lot of country girls do all kinds of "male" skills simply because those things need to get done to live that lifestyle. Interesting how, when I was growing up, my dad would get after me about notions he had where I wasn't behaving "lady-like" enough until he needed things done on the farm. Same kind of nonsense I heard when I joined the army. Don't know about you, but I'm not gender confused and happy to be female. Just never aspired to be a "lady."😄
Irene Cara was such a great artist. From stardom in the very influential film Fame to the emotional Out Here On My Own she was truly wonderful. All the energy and time spent fighting the corruption in the corporate music industry took a terrible toll on her. Another artist that was treated so badly by the greedy men in suits. She passed way too soon but will never be forgotten ❤
Hi Black Pegasus. Referring to the saying ' Goodnight Irene ' which your mom use to say to you apparently, it was a song originally written by Huddie ' Leadbelly ' Ledbetter in 1933. It has been covered by lots of people over the years . A band called the Weavers had a hit with it in 1950 and it was no1 for 13 weeks.
I watched the movie six times at the Theatre just to see the dance sequence to this song. You have to watch the movie Flashdance to get the story. Not a wet T-Shirt contest or Strip club.
Still there are videos of Irene singing her songs. One I have seen with just her dancing to either this song or Fame. Show Irene in video should be a reaction also since we do not have much. She let a quiet life basically giving up possible future success, but we do have these classics.
I just knew you were going to be prejudiced about this..... "Oh no, women can't be working in a man's job! But wet t-shirts and dancing on stage is what they do." :/ " During World War II, when men were shipped off overseas to fight, women took over the welding industry to build ships, airplanes, and other necessities that were needed." And men are great dancers! Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Rudolf Nureyev, Patrick Swayze, Michael Jackson?? And what about the great choreographers of this world?? A lot of men!! Anyway, the movie was big back then when lots of dance movies had been big. Great song by the late Irene Cara.... LJ
BP, here's a tidbit about me. I'm a woman, I started driving 18 wheelers when I was 21, in 1979. 🤔 I dont think you were thought of yet 😎 I'm 66 now. I retired after 30 yrs with over 1 million "logged" miles accident free. Thank you Jesus ! I'm from the generation your seeing in this vid. I spent 20 of those years as an Owner Operater. Me and my big Kenworth ran many miles listening to music, LOUD ! My generation of women helped break the glass ceilings, personally I drove my truck thru them 😄. Now, I sit on the porch with some sweet tea, and watch your reactions to all the music I love. Thank you, D
The first time I drove down Sunset Blvd in Hollywood int early 80's, I remember seeing all of the giant movie posters and the biggest one was for the movie Flashdance and it was just Jennifer Beals who I instantly thought was one of the most beautiful women I ever had seen. I didn't know who she was because the movie had not come out yet. But soon the movie and this song would both get to no. 1.
As a Generation X'er born in 1973, I grew up on this and it was a great time to be alive. You really should see the movie Flashdance. Every scene in this video is from the movie. Cheers from northeast Ohio.
Thank You!!! I always hear Never-ending Story at the beginning of that song, but none of my friends did lol. I am First Nations (Canada) and the female chief of our band is a trained and wonderfully skilled welder.
I loved this movie. I remember everyone going home and cutting holes in the knee of their jeans. FYI - Her main dance double was the French actress Marine Jahan, the shot of Alex diving through the air in slow motion during the audition sequence was performed by Sharon Shapiro, a professional gymnast. The breakdancing Alex performs in the audition sequence at the film's end was doubled by the male dancer Crazy Legs (RIP).
"What A Feeling" was the theme song for the 1980s movie Flashdance. about a girl who works as a steelworker during the day but has a passion to be a professional dancer. This video was all scenes from then movie. Irene Cara sang the theme song for another famous movie "Fame" (im gonna live forever)
A good female friend of mine is one of the best welders in the USA being one of the most accredited in her field. It is now not unusual to see women at the top of their game in what was previously male dominated professions.
It Was Sampled in Tons of Movies Flash dance, Dirty Dancing & Saturday Night Fever Were Dance Soundtracks of My Late Teens & 20s. High School Dances Were Huge Fun Back Then!!
OK, now you have to watch the movie. This was clips from the whole thing and it's a great flick. The last part was clips from the finale. This woman is working as a steelworker but wants to get into ballet. She works a second job as a dancer (not stripper) at a nightclub while trying to get an audition. The singer, dancer, and actress are three different people. The finale is dynamite!
Our beautiful latina Irene Cara. actress. singer and a songwriter, had been around since the early 70s when i was a little girl watching "The Electric Company" children's tv educational show. First time i saw her in a movie was in "Aaron Love Angela"(1975) then later in "Fame"(1980) where her performance and singing started the 80s era with a bang including the title song to "Fame". Standout song for me was her singing "(Out Here)On My Own" in the movie, very highly recommended. We lost Irene a couple of years ago at age 63. 🔥RIP Queen
This is one of two huge movie soundtrack songs for Irene Cara! This song was for the 1983 smash hit movie, "Flashdance" starring Jennifer Beale (she had a dance double) and she had a huge hit with the song "Fame" from the hit movie of the same name released in 1980! The movie "Fame" starred Debbie Allen, who also starred in a television show (with the same name) based on the movie. Irene was also in the movie "Fame" and she was also in the original movie "Sparkle" released in 1976. RIP Irene Cara! 💜💜
As others have said the actress was Jennifer Beals who had a double, Marine Jahan who did the actual dancing. However the leap through the air was done by Sharon Shapiro a gymnast. The break dancing section was done by Crazy Legs real name Richard Colón. The singer was Irene Cara.
Whoa...I knew about Marine Jahan...but not the rest of the gang that created the dance scene! TY for the info!😀Reminds me of the "Footloose dance scene - gymnastics, dancing, etc...
The ice skater was her sister in the movie. She did most of the dancing but the last dance was someone else. The lover friend was her boss. Irene Cara was a singer who sang the song. Def the 80's. I saw it when it came out at the movie theaters.
You should always see the movie before you hear this song. You'll never appreciate it on the level we do. Some of us were there. We saw it in theaters.
I'm a 74 yr old Alaska Native woman. I grew up w/men telling me a woman shouldn't do many things, which I went out & did, iron worker, groom @ Churchill Downs when Secretariat won 50 yrs ago, crab fisherman in the Bering Sea & hunter, trapper in Alaska. And fought for Native rights, women's & children's rights. Sucks being this old & people see just an old woman.
During the world war 2, there were hundreds of women who worked the factories while the men were at war. That's where the name "Rosie Riveter" came from. My grandma was one of those Rosies. 💜
Women go into jobs like that because the pay is pretty good. But it's not for everyone. Aside from the hard work and technical skills, a lot of guys do not treat the women like equals on the job. So, a lot of women who might be good at the work decide to NOT put up with the BS.
Irene Cara is the singer of the song. Jennifer Beals was the actress playing the character Alex in most of the movie and the dancing scenes in the studio especially at the end was done by a french pro dancer by the name Marine Jahan who did most of the dancing is still alive but that last dance scene before the school admission board was done by 3 different dancers broken into three takes so the leaping through the air was done by a American gymnist named Sharon Shapiro and the break Dancing spin was actually done by a male breakdancer Richard Colon known by the stage name Crazy Legs. But Jennifer did do some dance scenes especially in the exotic dancing cabaret club. Beals is still alive. Irene Kara sadly passed away From heart failure, November 2022 at 63, the woman who was the double for Alex's friend who wanted to be a professional skster died a year after the film was released in 1984 if a brain aneurysm. Now, if you want to see Irene Kara. Actually singing and doing a video. Then you need to go deeper into the 80s. Before this movie, it was a show called fame and she did the title song that was at the opening of this TV show every time it came on.Irene Cara was also Afro Latina, The movie is called Flashdance released in the early 80's. It's about a young 20 year old woman growing up and living in the expensive, New York City streets. Even though compared to today, it was dirt cheap and trying to survive. You know, working as a welder? Having to do exotic dancing jobs to make money and wants to be a professional dance and. her dream to go to a specific school of the arts in New York that was where she was trying to get into. And that love interest man was able to get her a hard to get audition at fiirst she's mad at him and doest soeak to him but goes anyway. And then the video ends with the scene where she gets in and runs out of wherever only to see him there and she's now happy to see him and thanks him romantically for helping her get a shot at her dream to get into this school for the Arts. THE END
There’s a great British movie called “The Full Monty,” where some working-class, middle-aged guys are trying to learn how to dance, so they watch “Flashdance.” During an early scene of the girl at work, one guy says, “I hope she’s a good dancer because she knows f*** all about welding.”
In that famous dancing scene they actually used 3-4 different people. One was a guy who did the break dancing part. Look it up. Still a fantastic movie.
Incredible movie! Classic/Iconic 80’s movie and soundtrack. Kenny Loggins was the king of movie soundtracks. Irene Cara was the Queen. This song, Fame, Break Dance and others.
FYI the first dancer in the black bra and panties on the stage is Cynthia Rhodes (Penny in Dirty Dancing; Richard Marx's ex wife and she was the dancer in Toto's Rosanna video). Irene Cara also starred in and sang the song 'Fame' another huge 80's movie. You might also want to check out the song 'Gloria' by Laura Branigan (was also in the movie 'Flashdance')
Flashdance is still high on my list of favorite movies. The soundtrack is incredible. I have every song on my play list in my truck. Iwas happy and surprised to see you had chosen this one. Thank you.
The movie is Flashdance
The dancer is Marine Jahan
The actress is Jennifer Beals
Irene Cara is the singer
Thank you, for breaking it down for B.P. Po' Baby. 😄
Thanks on all of our behalves.
And the dancing in that movie was so great it's been used in commercials, comedies & when she pulls the water down on the chair..well, everyone knows it's from flash dance.
Simplicity at its finest! TY👍
In case no one's mentioned it yet, the Jennifer/Marine breakdancer was another double - Richard "Crazy Legs" Colón
Damn kiddo. That rock you lived under.... she was a welder. And it's Jennifer Jennifer Beals and she is Drop Dead gorgeous.
Irene Cara is in Fame, singing, dancing..she could do it all Broadway style.
Irene is a boss 🙌 👏🏼

I was a welder in the 70's and it is now quite common
Jennifer Beale who played the young steel worker was 18 when she made this film and then quit Hollywood to go to Yale and study American literature. She later became known for embracing her bi-racial heritage and starred in TV's "The L Word."
The last TV I watched that she was in was "Lit to Me". Such a good show, got cancelled too early.
You need to watch the whole "Flash dance" movie. Trust me.
And Irene Cara stared in "Fame."
She is a dance major!!!!
Ballet ballarina!!!!! Dancer!!!!
The girl grinds at the factory, performs at the strip club, has dreams of making it as a ballet dancer and strives to be accepted to move up to being a real dancer!
Jennifer Beals was the actress, Irene Cara is the singer for the soundtrack!
You're Mamma was referring to the classic song, "Goodnight, Irene" by the Huddie
Lead Belly" Ledbetter from 1933, but made famous in 1950 by the Weavers, which is the version I grew up hearing from my Mom's LP collection from Reader's Digest Greatest Hits.
Plenty of conservative girls are skilled laborers, too.
Omg I know, right?? Conservative America for sure..... :/ LJ
@@aura81295 well said 👏 😊
Irene Cara was such a great artist.
My childhood crush Irene Cara...a true Bronx girl.
I thought it was a song, but wasn't sure I had the name right. Thanks.😊
I watched the movie six times at the Theatre just to see the dance sequence to this song. You have to watch the movie Flashdance to get the story. Not a wet T-Shirt contest or Strip club.
If you want see Irene go to the movie Fame, she sang the theme tune and acted in the movie too
And there's a Rocky Horror Picture show clip in it too. Great movie and then a TV series.
Still there are videos of Irene singing her songs. One I have seen with just her dancing to either this song or Fame. Show Irene in video should be a reaction also since we do not have much. She let a quiet life basically giving up possible future success, but we do have these classics.
You need to watch the Fame video to see Irene Cara and yes she is an actress singer
❤❤
You’re the only reactor who talks about how ridiculously beautiful she is
The number one song in America on the day of my birth...
The dancer was Jennifer Beals. Irene sang the theme song for the movie "Flashdance". Irene played in the movie "Fame", which is an iconic movie.
I just knew you were going to be prejudiced about this..... "Oh no, women can't be working in a man's job! But wet t-shirts and dancing on stage is what they do." :/
" During World War II, when men were shipped off overseas to fight, women took over the welding industry to build ships, airplanes, and other necessities that were needed."
And men are great dancers!
RIP. She was awesomeness
Besides loving to dance to Roundabout, I loved dancing to this. It was the best of times
✨️🎶✨️
A good female friend of mine is one of the best welders in the USA being one of the most accredited in her field. It is now not unusual to see women at the top of their game in what was previously male dominated professions.
That's fantastic. Amazing the positive changes in all work places.
It Was Sampled in Tons of Movies Flash dance, Dirty Dancing & Saturday Night Fever Were Dance Soundtracks of My Late Teens & 20s. High School Dances Were Huge Fun Back Then!!
If you want to see Irene Cara in a movie, she was in the movie Fame
OK, now you have to watch the movie. This was clips from the whole thing and it's a great flick. The last part was clips from the finale. This woman is working as a steelworker but wants to get into ballet. She works a second job as a dancer (not stripper) at a nightclub while trying to get an audition. The singer, dancer, and actress are three different people. The finale is dynamite!
RIP IRENE KARA, one of my favourite movies in the 80’s still special to watch
Irene Cara's "Out Here On My Own" is a MUST listen!!!
Yes!!
Yes!!
This movie and song was huge when it came out. My kids today love watching this movie.
My grandma, and many others, built battleships in WW 2 while men were soldiers
our good friend and dentist watched our boys so my wife and i went to see this. we both loved dancing and stayed to watch it twice.
No the girl in the Video is NOT Irene Cara - it's an actress - Jennifer Beals.
Except for the breakdancing, that was Richard "Crazy Leggs" Colón, a member of the "Rock Steady Crew"
Irene’s live performances are spectacular!
The ice skater was her sister in the movie. She did most of the dancing but the last dance was someone else. The lover friend was her boss. Irene Cara was a singer who sang the song. Def the 80's. I saw it when it came out at the movie theaters.
That's a real woman when you give her flowers and she gives one back to you.
THE END
You should watch the movie Flashdance. I really enjoyed it!
"Maniac" by Michael Sembello is another hit tune from Flashdance.
One the best soundtracks from the 80's for sure I have it🎼
'Welder by Day, Dancer by Night'
the girl who dancing was the actress jennifer beals, irene cara she was the singer of the song of the movie
the dancer was Marine Jahan (French dancer), not Beals.
@@carolhayar3037actually it was not only her, the break dancing part of thedance routine was done by a male in a wig and leg warmers.
Incredible movie! Classic/Iconic 80’s movie and soundtrack. Kenny Loggins was the king of movie soundtracks. Irene Cara was the Queen. This song, Fame, Break Dance and others.
Singing dancing beauty of Jennifer and this song 1980's classic. i think within the story -family of steel workers. Her dream singing and dancing.
You NEED to see this movie!!!!! Flashdance. Hello from sunny Florida 🌞🌴
The leg warmers! I still have a pair in an old gym bag somewhere in my garage LOL
And the off the shoulder shirts too! LOL
❤❤❤❤Great song, timeless...from one of my favorite 80s movies !😊😊😊😊
FYI the first dancer in the black bra and panties on the stage is Cynthia Rhodes (Penny in Dirty Dancing; Richard Marx's ex wife and she was the dancer in Toto's Rosanna video). Irene Cara also starred in and sang the song 'Fame' another huge 80's movie. You might also want to check out the song 'Gloria' by Laura Branigan (was also in the movie 'Flashdance')
Your facial expressions crack me up.
I thank you Robert for putting this out today,.
I needed the lift; this song is infectious!
Flashdance is still high on my list of favorite movies. The soundtrack is incredible. I have every song on my play list in my truck. Iwas happy and surprised to see you had chosen this one. Thank you.
Have always loved this song ! 🔥🔥🔥
the water splash scene is soooooooo iconic
