Minerals in Pet Food...real or synthetic

  • Many pet food marketers will say vitamins and minerals are cooked out of commercial pet food, so that's why synthetic vitamins and minerals have to be added. they claim their whole fresh ingredients provide vitamins and minerals naturally. Is that actually true?

Hi Glenn! Thank you for bringing this up! Many people don't realize how important all this balance and nutrient-nutrient interaction is. It's not only about having all nutrients in the diet, but it's also about having them all in BALANCE with each other. I think people focus too much on Ca:P ratio but as you demonstrated, there are many other ratios that should be accounted for and let's be honest we need the board certified veterinary nutritionists and chemists to do that. This brings me to the idea of constant lies being spread that we shouldn't listen to vets and especially those who work for the big companies and instead listen to the pet nutritionist's all natural way of making a diet which I strongly doubt that these people are formulating balanced diets.
Also, the mineral content in the same ingredient can vary depending on the soil/environment the ingredient was grown in. So good companies always test their raw materials and when they find discrepancies, they either reject the raw materials or have their experts supplement the deficient minerals. I don't think people making their homemade diets (even if it is formulated by boarded vets) have the means to test each batch they purchase from the grocery store to check for consistencies in the mineral content.
My cat just had another check up and her teeth are still in perfect health all because of Hill's t/d! I can't believe that we aren't dealing with gingivitis for the first time in years! Actually I do believe it; it's because SCIENCE DID THAT. ;)

Thrilled to hear your cat is doing so well on TD! Yes, its funny how nutrition is so different than the endless debates folks have over ingredients and marketing.

Another great one, sir. Am continuing to catch-up on your videos as I'm fairly new still, but now know enough that we are getting a handle on our 12 year old's food allergy situation. Continuing the Hill's z/d, and will keep you posted.

So true! I’m a nurse and this applies to plants and humans too. It’s definitely a balance. One affects the other and you certainly can end up with a deficiency.

Happy Thanksgiving weekend to you Glenn from this Canadian fan here! On your American Thanksgiving, I am grateful to have found you and all the invaluable information that you provide us with! This chart is so informative, it made me understand so much better the reason why science is so important in balancing those mineral levels in our pet food! I'm learning something new each time! Please do a mineral review of Dog Chow green bag. I’ve used that for 30+ years. When I was a kid I’d cut this lady’s grass she has rescue greyhounds and various other small dogs. She wanted me to buy the science diet but couldn’t afford all the money I earned to buy that. She’d pressure me but I wouldn’t pay that much for my dog as a young adult.

Hi Glenn, thanks for the video! Your video title contained the phrase “real or synthetic”. I was hoping you would delve more into that aspect. Specifically, when kibble manufacturers add minerals to meet AFCO standards, what source they use. My understanding is that pet food manufacturers often use minerals and vitamins derived from petroleum or hydrochloric acid, or synthetic compounds as opposed to those naturally occurring in plant and animal derived sources. There are kibble manufacturers that do meet AFCO standards without the use of synthetics but rather use naturally derived sources. But they are few and far between. What is your take on this? Does the source of where these vitamins and mineral supplements are derived from matter to you? Would a vitamin E, for instance, derived from petroleum be as good as one derived from fish or safflower?

Wow! I swear the folks that leave comments on my channel are the most intelligent people! Actually I was not diving as deep as you. My main point was the debate over being able to provide all the micronutrients with the ingredients only, or having to add a vitamin/mineral premix to achieve optimal levels. I honestly don't know much about the different sourcing of said minerals. I will have to ask around and find out. I know most reputable companies are buying premixes but how they differ in sourcing I don't know.

Hello Glenn, I am sorry to hear your family has had some struggles since 2020. All the best to you and everyone in your family! This video kind of made me laugh as I'm sure it is like nails on a chalkboard for Rachel Fussaro lol! My family lost our beloved cat last April, and we also lost our beloved dog a few months before this. It has completely devastated me and my family. After doing some research of my own (instead of just trusting my vet) I realized that both of these deaths could have been from inadequate veterinary care and specifically the wrong diets!!. The vet I was using was really into alternative care, etc ( I won't go into specifics on this comment) and I trusted this person blindly. I grieve every day that I cannot do better for those two babies we lost, but from finding your channel and Dr Rae and Vet Med Corner, I have completely switched what I feed my pets, and I now take them to a reputable vet with real, science--focused care. I just wanted to share this with you, with your American Thanksgiving, as it is something that I am very thankful for!! Thank you for your good work. I hope my current animals will live a much longer, healthier life due to proper vet care and nutrition because they are the center of my family with all of us loving them very much.

TJ, thank you so much for your message. I too know the pain of losing pets. It seems to get harder as I get older. I would not be so hard on yourself. We ficus on nutrition a lot ( obviously) but to the marketers dismay, nutrient can only go so far. There may not have been much you could have done. And I have learned the hard way, all we can do is what we believe is best. We can make our choices but we can’t choose the outcome. I hope you have many wonderful years with your fur babies. It seems impossible to explain the bond we can have with an animal. You either know it or it’s impossible to understand. Thanks for including me with such awesome vets I respect. It’s all been a great blessing for me.

Thank you for this channel. I needed another perspective on food. I would love to see videos on breeding and puppy raising. I am a dedicated breeder of havanese and I'm always looking to improve diet for my dogs and puppies. Currently trying the Farmina line to see how they do. I have not found too many videos on TH-cam regarding breeding and diet.

Gabrielle, we have a 14 yr old havanese, Bella, who thinks shes a 7 lb Alfa! she just had blood work for a dental and all is perfect. i must tell you I am no expert on breeding or breeding diet. all I know from my years in vet clinics is feed a good puppy food, no large breed, the last trimester, and keep mom on the puppy food till the pups are weaned. Large breed would be too low in calcium. And in my experience, avoid supplements, especially calcium. the puppy food has enough.

It is called a Mulder's Chart (not the "they are out there" Mulder). It is used to see how nutrients in the soil influence each other. I will eat fresh chicken, steak and ground beef for a year. You eat hot dogs, bologna, McNuggets and corn meal. Let's see who is healthier. LOL

@@ZaryaTheLaika LOL. I would probably be healthier even if the beef was raw, but I would cook it for me. My cats eat it raw. If Glenn eats nothing but processed food for a year, it won't take a doctor exam to know he isn't well! Huel contains synthetic additives, just like most commercial pet food, including wheat. It does not have corn, so Glenn may not like it! You do know I'm being facetious, right?
