The competition may be fierce, but art will be the great equalizer when men are pitted against women on Ink Master: Battle of the Sexes. Teams of male and female tattoo artists battle it out, but only one person will take home $100,000 and the coveted title of Ink Master.

The women really pulled off a strong piece with the help of DJ!
I had to roll my eyes though when the Guys Team dismissed them for not having contrast because there was not a lot of black. They only listened when Dave told them about temperature contrast even though that was what the girls were aiming for from the start!
Dave should have pulled out a color wheel and explained complementary colors to those dudes.
I'm waiting for many of the guys (ahem Cam) to go home on a messy contrast elimination tattoo and complaining "the judges are full of shit, my tattoo had a lot of contrast, look how much black I used"

I swear DJ is the greatest coach ever. He has a coaching style and sticks to it. He's always upbeat and excited, and he's an incredible tattoo artist

@@fendertremolo9793 Anything can theoretically contrast. From a humans perspective its easiest to use black and white; however I think contrast is a very hard thing in art to use as a critique, simply because contrast is used all the time by humans to decide between things, making it a constant in art no matter what you use.
that dj guy kinda dominates these flash challenges... shows how versatile he is as an artist...
Comes to season 12 and thinks contrast = must have black... boys didnt even do their homework before comin to the show.

The most basic thing you learn in art school is that contrast is more than just value. Theres colour contrast, temperature, shape, the list goes on. Black vs white is so rudimentary.

Let’s be real the guys piece was okay. Like the judges say where they stop blending the black hit a wall so it didn’t look smooth to the other fish. And that grey fish was pretty ugly for their their standards of art. On the other hand the girl’s piece definitely had contrast or else it wouldn’t look so seamless between the walls and HD-like. You can see it when the camera pams and you see the walls at slightly different angles they piece still shines well.
The guys were going too basic. Yeah the most obvious contrast is black and white, therefore the fish’s light among darkness. But they only had one light source in their piece which isn’t translated onto the fish bodies to even emphasize it.
I equally like both the artworks, but I gotta go for the women's team because I want to see DJ in the finale.

The difference between these two groups is the female group had a single leader making calls and decisions and rallying the group. The male group had a leader who wanted to step back and observe more than five orders, so all the guys were trying to be the leader and fighting. As a result they wasted time and their painting looked like it was finger painted
DJ is amazing, I freaking love him, and he already had coaching experience so that gives him a bit of a leg up here.
DJ is up there in the best ink master contestants every. Him, Cleen Rock One and Ryan Ashley are the top 3

Katie's an excellent artist and absolutely deserves to be a coach, but I do also question the choice of matching her up against DJ. I wish they'd matched him with another artist who was known for her creativity (because they certainly aren't matching them by styles this episode anyway). Honestly, he would've been better paired against Ryan or Erin Chance or Deanna Smith. Just someone who was also a beast at creativity and flash challenges like DJ.

When everyone wants to be a leader, if there is the coach who was the one incharge for putting all the ideas in one piece and taking action immediately.
I think it is better to be a follower to avoid chaos in your teamwork.
Dividing them into groups by gender was a bad idea. Very bad.
Making things about gender = drama, drama = audience, audience = money.

I hated DJ as a coach on Return of the Masters for his rule bending (like sending Josh--the eventual Ink Master--down for elimination for being his "worst artist"), but he's my favorite coach for the ladies so far. His total confidence and jump-to-it-ness is exactly what the ladies need. They doubt themselves too much, which can breed discord and arguments, but DJ just pushed them right in. I really respect it.
It's a competition you treat it like one. Scott Marshall R.I.P. was the master of using the rules to his advantage. But DJ is talented and a great motivator and leader.

Yeah, it seems hard to go against the male team when all they can do is trash talk.
They definitely have the skills & knowledge however. It was so cool to see how their coach reminded them of that while still giving advice on how to make this great. This was overall positive.

I honestly like both pieces, but I feel like the women’s piece shows more depth than it does contrast. Even though I feel like it’s a simple idea to use a dark background and a very bright looking light source, I feel like the men’s piece hit the Challenge.
lol. They had a strong yet elegant blue vs yellow + black contrast, and honestly even the grass showed a comprehension of what contrast is (playing with levels of darkness and of colors in order to achieve a differentiation between two elements). The color wheel contrasting color is literally the first thing you learn in art class. The guys interpretation is super basic and not that well executed. + except for the light, the whole piece us super flat. To me, the girls showed that they actually understand how to use contrast.

Warm colours: Reds, Oranges, Yellows
Cold colours: Blues, Greens, Purples
Girls team 100% had contrast between the contrasting yellow and black bees, from the blue sky and green grass.
If you’re a tattoo artist, the objective word is artist here, you should know there’s more contrasts than Blanc Noir.
Quantity contrast or Quality contrast are two of the most simple contrasts there are.
