This time I made one of the recipes I learned from my grand parents (shrimp chips). I also tried making dried natto for the first time. Shrimp chips is easy and fun to make. If you get a chance, please give it a try!

【Ingredients】
dried shrimp 3-5 tbsp
rice 200g
salt 1/2 tsp
You can change amount of the ingredients as you like. (ex. less salt or more shrimp)

A lot of snack manufacturers have professional sized dehydrators and ovens that can extract moisture quickly without heavily cooking the product, which can affect the texture. You'll find that making cookies that are as crisp as store bought to be equally challenging for the same reason.
Convection oven vs normal oven is the difference, usually. Most people don’t have convection in their homes.
@@jesslikescoffee24 It also makes a difference what humidity the source air has. Friend was trying to use a home dehydrator but needed to avoid cooking temp. Problem is, he is running it indoors during humid months, so they molded before completely dehydrating. I suggested closing it in a room with a dehumidifier and it worked.
Cookies being soft or crispy also has a lot to do with chemistry, there was an article a couple years ago that I saw were it talked about what to add or remove to get different textures or spread of the cookie.
I think they might have used a freeze dryer method. It creates a lighter texture that doesn't shrink as much as dehydrated food
@@akamesama Even just a small CPU fan aimed at the food, to get airflow can help dramatically. I did that to dry too many herbs at once, worked beautifully, even if I overloaded the basket

Funny seeing Haku and Nagi so interested in natto. My cat's vet actually said I should try giving him natto, (without forcing or anything, only if he liked it) because it would be good for his health issues. My cat hated it, I tried eating it sometimes since I have bought it but I did not like it as well.
BTW my other cat goes insane seeing your cats and hearing Poki meow, she always meows back.
Have you tried mixing some low sodium dashi or bonito flakes with it?
If you don’t like the natto texture, it’s a bit tough to save it haha. If it’s just the taste, agreeeing w above commenter, or also adding a bit of Japanese mustard
WOW! The table has turned and now Poki stays calm and polite and Haku & Nagi are moving alot and trying to interfere with the food continuously! LOL

I like how Haku is committed to helping to ruin Jun's posture (particularly the assertion of dominance at 14:23 so Jun daren't move his head to cast his gaze anywhere else but the floor). I love the cats so much.

Reminds me of krupuk, which is decently popular here in the Netherlands. Except the most common type is made with tapioca flour and shrimp, not with rice.
Doesn't krupuk is stable snack food to south east Asia,it's specially for Indonesia?
@@anindhitakiranaisa5815 actually both chinese and indonesian restaurants have it here. We have the 'regular' and also the Casave (which has a little bit of a spicy kick).

Hey Jun, i would have a suggestion to make : you should invest in a small microphone that you can put on your clothes, it would improve tbe sound quality by a lot ! 😉
Jun at this point you either need your own anime series or Japanese drama series. Even a manga would be good because you wouldn’t want to read or watch a story about a man who cooks with his cats in the kitchen . 🐱 👨🍳
your tastebuds grew! there's a lot of foods I disliked for a long time, but in my mid-20s I realized some of those foods suddenly tasted good, so I started trying out things I'd always hated and found I liked a lot of them now. Though, part of the reason I liked them now was that I was cooking them in ways that brought out flavors I liked (ex: steam fresh or frozen vegetables, instead of eating canned veggies that were boiled....why did my family do that its so gross!)
for the natto, you can just use the oven or air fryer
I would never have thought to make a rice cracker in the microwave from leftover rice. Delightful!
I really like the snacks from Sakuraco but once they’re gone, they’re gone. So learning how to make the snacks is such a great idea!

i think instead of dehydrating most companies use a freeze drier. If you naturally dry stuff they shrivel up, but freeze drying usually keep up their shape or expand
Jun wants a bigger kitchen so that he won't bend his body when working in his kitchen. Now having a bigger kitchen but still bends down because Haku rides on his back 😆

This is quite the nice dish, interesting way to use natto.
To get the crunchy natto texture, you should probably add some oil to it and then either air fry it or roast it in the oven 💞

I love the flavor honesty! I did a semester abroad in Japan and was not a fan of mochi texture or anko flavor. Then a few years later my tastebuds changed and I started craving that texture (mochi chew/stickiness) and the flavor of anko. So while I’m still not a fan of natto I get the taste change experience that makes an icky flavor into a yum flavor!
this might be a fun recurring series, to try to make some of the snacks from your monthly boxes and see how they compare!

Our routine (except wearing a mask and disinfecting everything he touched, e.x the bathroom) was our diet, including vitamin C and vitamin D3 as pills, spirulina, propolis and effervescent tablets with Echinacea & vitamin C. 💖😷
I am just dazzled and amazed that Haku LIKED NATTO AT ALL?? that's just such a wonder of nature, that a cat would eat dried beans. I guess it looks like normal cat kibble, and smells different?
