    I purchased my Pro100S about 5 years ago when this model had already been available for several years prior. For sure it was obvious that a replacement model would eventually appear ( and indeed it did in the form of the Pro200 ) so do I have buyers remorse? Well, of course not, is the pro200 better, probably, but by what margin and would it have been worth not owning my Pro100 and instead waited the almost three years that passed just to get the lastest version on release? I doubt many could ever discern a difference in quality between my Pro100 and the newest Pro200. I suspect a future Pro200 mkII ( maybe Pro250 or Pro200S ) will not be light years ahead of the current Pro200 either. So really, why wait, unless an official announcement has been made of a replacement being imminent. Buy what your budget allows now and learn as much as possible. Knowledge is really the biggest defining difference between printer results in my opinion.

    • @KeithCooper

      Excellent approach - the improvements for the 100>200 were mostly usability related, and a fixing of Canon's very conservative approach to 'safe margins' on better/art papers.

    Your knowledge and experience are invaluable to fledglings looking to get into printing. Thank you for sharing with the world. I'm looking at getting my first real printer (not counting the 60$ standard HP printer in my closet). It will be an investment. I'll be using it for fine art printing, and am looking at the P300 as my likely choice. The P1000 is incredible, but I'm not sure the $400 difference is justifiable when I don't have an immediate need for 17x22 print size. I figured I would start with 13X19 and revisit a P1000 in the future.

    I have a Pro-10 that I've used with great success for 5 years now. One thing I did do to lower my costs was to refill my carts with Precision Colors ink. I have 2 1/2 complete sets of Canon cartridges so I can have one set in the printer and another set ready to go. When one cartridge needs replacing I replace all 10 at the same time and reset and refill all of the cartridges I just removed. It did take a bit of work to dial in the colours properly, particularly with regard to the blacks, but I'm very pleased with the results. I print quite a bit and the price of Canon inks for the Pro-10 is just crazy. I'd love to move up to a printer that accepts roll paper and is at least 17" wide. But it would need large tanks to make printing more economical.

      @@KeithCooper Yes, I do Keith.
      I use Lightroom. On Pro 10 properties under Quick Setup I select Color/intensity Manual Adjustment then go to the Main Tabe. I manually set up the colour intensity, different settings for colour and B&W

      I go back to Quick Setup, then select media type, print quality, paper size, then click save and give it a name, usually the paper and size I am using. Occasionally I need to tweak the intensity and contrast but that's about it. I just recieved 10 new inks from Precisions Colour so I will soon find out if the new inks match the old.

    @mb-moose ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great discussion. I am doing a lot more photography now, so felt the next step was to get a more capable photo printer. The et8550 was probably my original choice until jagos art had issues with several papers. After seeing how many people this affected, i contacted marrutt who said 'a lot of epsom users were having issues with a wide range of papers'. I contacted epsom who simply said 'use rear tray' but that hasnt helped JagosArt.
    So i thought ^next rung up^ might be the answer. So pro200/300 or p700/900. I dont think that i have space for the p900 so hoping santa might bring a p700. The canons put me off with smaller carts and more frequent purging. (Fotospeed ink use test).
    Sorry, rambling.. my point is that when spending £600-£800 on a photo printer, surely decent paper handling should be a given. How can epsom be happy with a significant number of users being restricted on paper choice? The cost of ink cartridges is enough of a penalty, but buying a speciality photo printer that may or may not like your preferred paper is madness.
    Thanks boss

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks - there is an aspect of success of the 8550 which I think might have somewhat caught out Epson. I don't think it was planned [market wise] as a good quality photo/art printer, more as a 'home printer' where paper and quality expectations would be lower.
      The printers I've had here and tested have mostly been pretty good in paper handling, but I've had enough people ask about issues that I'm hoping that Epson puts a bit more effort into paper handling in new designs. That said you choose the paper after choosing the printer - not everything works, I simply don't expect ti.
      Printers are still getting better - but I still stand by saying if you can't get good prints out of a modern printer, it's almost certainly your own fault ;-)

    They use the 4900 for DTF too which prints nice but to me it looked like the internals of the DTG Epson F2000 (dry cap etc), they would clog up because of the white ink and heads were costly, so it's interesting you say the new 5300 will use P900 internals and I wonder if they'll make a DTG printer with the same setup based on that.

    We need dye ink printers larger than 13", since pigment ink prohibits luster and metallic papers from projecting the image into the room. Many aren't printing on paper anymore, because metal prints have taken over, since they reflect.
    Since the Canon Pro-200 has the best color gamut with their 8 inks, at the very least a 17" version would be appreciated, and also a 24".

      I'd expect the 5300 to behave as the P900/P700 in this respect - the print head [and associated systems] used for the 700/900 is designed more for consumer levels of use.

Currently, I’m using a 15-year-old EPSON printer and am quite satisfied with its performance.
