  • The Dell G7 Gaming laptop is a gaming laptop which features Nvidia’s Max-Q 1060 graphics and Intel i9-8950HK 6 core CPU in the top end model which I’ve got here. In this review I’ll cover the features the laptop has to offer, thermals, battery life, undervolting, overclocking and perform a series of game benchmarks to help you see how it performs and help you decide if it’s worth buying.

      Jarrod's reviews are the bomb.. Other ones are ownordisown and MobiletechReview.. Of course with Jarrod's reviews, we at least know that whatever we watch will be about an item we can buy in OZ.. the other two channels mentioned also go into good detail with thermals, throttling and noise, and are well worth researching to find a review on a model that Jarrod may not have. :) But they are not all available in OZ (sometimes the same thing with a different brand is, for example we have metabox using the same clevo's that sager uses, and so on).

      indeed, he is more specific than others.
      but i wonder, could i just... change the display of the g7 ? with e better one ?
      also, do they make multicolor keyboads ? i wanna change that too.
      if i give it a decent display and a multucolor keyboard, i think this might just be the best laptop yet.

    I have the i7-8750H version and I don't get power limit throttled at all. Have a stable -125mv undervolt on the CPU and a stable +175MHz core/+200MHz memory overclock on the GTX 1060 MaxQ (overclocks and undervolts will vary from device to device). Also, no thermal throttling to be found on my device. Also, the white variant is beautiful with blue and silver accents.

  • @scann563
    @scann563 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I9 is a bit overkill. For straight gaming you'll only need the i7-8750h. I have that along with the 1060 max q, running fortnite max graphics max frames, 15 background tabs opened to various applications, could barely get it past 60 percent cpu usage. If you limit it to 60fps on max settings probably only 30 percent or so cpu usage. For straight gaming, upgrade to a gtx1070, not an i9.

    • @scann563
      @scann563 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My fps is actually worse. 30 frames at most. Gone through plenty of threads no answer. Went into window settings and the Nvidia control settings nothing worked. Unplugging drops my clock speed from around 3.5 to under 2, (as if it was thermal throttling) I've just accepted I can't play unplugged :/

    • @hemanb18
      @hemanb18 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scann563 that's bad. 30 fps is so shitty. I was stuck with 30 fps too. Now it keeps switching to 60 - 30 fps. Try switching off geforce experience battery boost if you haven't . Or raise its fps limit to 60

      Still no MX150 laptops yet, I've been trying to get some but no luck, same with the G3, no current plans but hopefully one becomes available in the future, I was waiting for both the G7/G3 and the G7 became available first so that's why I had it. In theory lower specs would equal less temperatures, however I'm working on a G5 vs G7 video at the moment and the G5 had an i7 CPU compared to the i9 in the G7 but I got about the same temperatures between the two due to power limit throttling in both, but more on that in the upcoming comparison (probably within the next week).

    • @GalacticSoul42
      @GalacticSoul42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps since the i5 8300H has 4 cores compared to the 6 of the i7 and i9 it should draw less power and not have the power limit throttling

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah possibly, hard to say without testing though, and if there's no power limit throttling in theory it wouldn't be capped at lower performance so that might actually lead to increased heat, lots of variables!

    • @JarrodsTech

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! Yes, it's better to keep it plugged in for a couple of reasons. Firstly, you'll get better performance while plugged in with the battery at 100%, the battery alone can't fully power all components, you'll get less performance on battery only. Second, constantly discharging/recharging the battery is the best way to degrade it.

    I have no clue what overclocking and undervolting is! My wife just got me a g7, and I’m trying to learn about it, but I think I’m more confused. I’m not a computer guy obviously, but it seems like I got a decent unit

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can of course just use it out of the box and it will most likely work just fine for everything you need 😃 if it's getting hot though you can try CPU undervolting, basically it sends less power to the CPU which usually results in less heat, and less likely that the baked in power limits will be triggered, potentially giving a little performance boost. There's a good guide on the process here: th-cam.com/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/w-d-xo.html
      As for overclocking, it's as simple as downloading and installing MSI Afterburner, then using this to boost the core clock speed of the graphics, which will just give you a small improvement in graphical tasks like games, though there is a little work involved to get it stable - again unless you want to get the absolute maximum performance out of the machine there's no need to do either of these things, for most people it should work within acceptable levels out of the box.

If I recall the Hero series from ASUS is meant to be for moba/fps games so probably explains the 1050Ti/120Hz combo. Depends if the 1050Ti is enough for the games that you plan on playing really, as for getting it I'm not sure, I've been asking since it was released, I was able to get the Scar edition but no the Hero one yet.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Dell G7 with i7-8570? Probably not unfortunately, a full review would take a whole week of time and the difference would be extremely minimum due to the power limit throttling. That said I'm working on a G5 vs G7 comparison video that will be out later this week, and the G5 had the 8750H, and you'll see they are basically the same despite the i9 in the G7.

    • @darnhead6701
      @darnhead6701 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jarrod'sTech Ok, so is the i9 version better or the i7?? Because there's a lot of laptops that are i9 and some are i7 and the i7 version is better. I saw these from reviewers and said i9 is a downgrade.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what you're doing, as mentioned I haven't tested the i7 in the G7 so I can't say for sure, but assuming it's similar to the i7 in the G5 they have the same power limit, so multicore performance will be extremely similar, you'll only benefit in the i9 in less threaded applications, eg games.

  • @giresque7680

    I've been considering in getting the one with i5 and GTX 1050 since it's around my budget (it's around MYR 3500, which would be around 840ish USD), and I intend to use it for digital art (like Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop) and some gaming. But I'm not sure with the display quality for the colours. Do you think it would just be OK for digital art use or are there any other recommendations that has some decent display quality that is less than 900$? I can't settle for the best display (which I think most will cost 1k$+ in my country) since it'll be overbudget for me.

    • @JarrodsTech

      Personally I'd probably want something with better colour accuracy for video editing, the 4K panel may offer that as they are usually higher quality but I don't know for sure if that's the case. Also due to the power limit throttling you won't get full performance when exporting video as that's quite CPU intensive, it will probably still be pretty good and most laptops with 8750H seem to have limitations like this anyway.

      @@amazely5205 Anything with the 8750H, dual channel memory, and 1050Ti or above should work well I think. The issue with gaming laptops like this on the lower end of the price scale is that they tend to cut costs on the screen, so it's not as bright or have as good colour as you'd probably want for editing. This is a really good laptop for the money. It's only $1,599 USD for this model, and a desktop i9 with this power costs $699-899 (it has 10 cores), a GTX 1060 $299, and 16GB DDR4 $150-$200. That brings your total to about $1150-1300. So considering that, this is a good deal. I just wish they would add a GTX 1070/1070 TI/1080/1080 TI option for this laptop. Not relating to this, someone should make a laptop with a Titan GPU.

      The only thing keeping laptops from having anything higher than an xx80 GPU is the fact that power bricks only go up to 330W, so you’d find yourself being power limit throttled on both the CPU and GPU if you were to somehow put a Ti or Titan class GPU inside a laptop. The SLI laptops were definitely not ready for primetime, as even with TWO 330W power bricks, I think the laptops had trouble keeping under the power limits. When Nvidia was putting desktop class 980 GPUs inside high end and custom laptops, I think a lot of the same behavior was happening.
      We’re definitely going to need to see higher capacity power bricks before Ti and Titan class GPUs will happen, I’d say around 550W, as the designs of the laptops would still need to keep the TDPs of the GPUs reasonable.

    I just connected my Dell G7 to the AW2518H monitor (which has G-SYNC) via Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort.
    I don't see the "Display" option in the Nvidia Control Panel, which I believe may be due to that the Intel graphics take precedence.
    For what it's worth, I updated all the drivers and I am using the only cable Thunderbolt 3 to Displayport. I am able to have the 240hz refresh rate but not G-sync through the Nvidia Panel.
    Question: Is it possible for my laptop to enable G-SYNC to an external monitor? Can I use any adapters or cables to have G-sync work on the monitor?

      I think you can get the G5 with the same specs for a little cheaper, worth a look, I recently did a G5 vs G7 comparison and it seemed to be a little better value for basically the same machine, otherwise yes the G series seems to be well priced for those specs.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are either of them single channel (1x memory stick) or dual channel (2x memory sticks)? If both are single stick, you won't see much of a performance boost, dual channel makes a pretty big difference though, you can see how much in this video: th-cam.com/video/E_aPaj5QkmM/w-d-xo.html
      Either way though if the memory is the only difference, not really worth it as you can easily buy more memory for under $200 and upgrade yourself.

    What should I get for architectural rendering and some casual gaming, this Dell G7 with i7 8th gen with 16 GB RAM or the ASUS TUF FX505 with i5 8th gen and 8 GB RAM (I’ll install 16 GB more, so it has 24 GB). Personally I like the screen of the ASUS better plus it has the standard GTX 1060 6GB.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd probably get the FX505 if you're upgrading the memory anyway, better screen as you say plus GTX 1060 graphics while the G7 is Max-Q only, so around 10% better performance just from that based on my own testing.

    this G7 the top of the line is really worth it? because I met some models of the dell type the last gamer notebook and among others I found a lot of money for a machine well say plastic, small and apparently fragile keyboard, and DELL has a pos Well, if I have any problems with the machine, will they really solve my problem?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any personal experience with Dell after sales support so I can't really comment on that unfortunately. To me it felt pretty sturdy / well built, no issues with the keyboard, the price seems alright compared to the competition, but as mentioned in the video I don't think the i9 is worth it, under multicore loads it doesn't perform much better than the i7, so only really worth it if you want a little better single core performance I think.

    hey,will a gtx 1050 ti laptop last 3 years of gaming from now at medium to ultra settings?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends on the games you play, but I'd say no, given the 1050ti can't really handle ultra settings today at 1080p in most games (yes some less demanding games like overwatch are fine but most would need medium or so). Also consider that the 10 series is already 2 years old at this point, with new hardware just around the corner, meaning newer games may be built to take advantage of newer hardware, but again difficult to predict.

Just got a g7 core i7 8750h 6 core and 1060 max q, and i tried playing "rise of the tomb raider". to my greatest dismay the frame rate is just 14-19 fps during gameplay but goes to 87fps when the game is loading. Found information on the internet saying it could be due to the 130 watt power supply i use rather than the recommended 180w. Could this be true or the laptop is faulty ?
