What happened to the Oscars? Will Smith slapping Chris Rock was just the cherry on top of a deeply frustrating evening. The frantically edited 94th Academy Awards had an air of desperation as it grasped for ways to hold our attention and seem relevant, while diluting anything serious about its central mission to preserve great cinema’s legacy.

Aside from “The Slap,” another reason ratings have likely been slipping is the disconnect between what’s popular among fans and what is popular among critics. They mentioned that Oscar viewership peaked in 1998, that was the year Titanic swept the Oscars and would go on to being the highest grossing film of all time, at that time. Even through the mid-2000s, the movies that were nominated were critically acclaimed and also popular like Gladiator, Moulin Rouge, Lord of the Rings, etc. In the 2010s just about every Best Picture winner was among the lowest grossing. Not to say that these films don’t have artistic merit, they do, but the average person probably isn’t going to watch just to see films they’ve never heard of win. There’s nothing to root for for many. Granted, the only things that seem to be really popular nowadays are the superhero movies. Another reason the ceremony itself fails is comedians making terrible, lame jokes and pandering, unnecessary performers and performances, all trying to achieve a viral moment.

    • @AndromedaCeline
      @AndromedaCeline 2 ปีที่แล้ว +74

Agree! Movie-going experience has changed drastically over the last 30yrs, and they have failed to keep up with how people watch movies. When I was a kid, we used to just go to the movies for fun. Sometimes we didn't even know what we were going to see until we got there. Movie tickets and concessions were pretty affordable, so you could go to the movies to socialize with friends and blow two hours on a movie you had no idea if it would be good or not. Now, movie prices are insanely high. Most people don't feel they can afford to just go and see whatever's there anymore, they don't want to make that investment risk, especially not on some long, dry drama or another oscar-bait movie. Hence why superhero/franchise movies are killing it rn. There's a spectacle there that can only be appreciated on a large IMAX screen with subwoofer-like sound, surrounded by hundreds of fans like you cheering at the screen. That's worth the $30-40 they charge you for these tickets. So yea not everyone is going to see House of Gucci, Power of The Dog, Belfast, etc in theaters. They are wising up a bit now bc of the pandemic and making these movies streamable, but they still don't get that the only people really seeing these oscar movies and caring about them are the members of the Academy. Therefore, they are the only ones invested in watching for the most part. Most people at home do not care enough.

You're right to a point. I agree part of the problem is that it's been a long time since the Oscars awarded something that was a major part of the zeitgeist.
However, I think that speaks more to the larger problem of the year round blockbuster model vs. blockbuster season. No one seems willing to take risks on the big campaigns for films like Titanic, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, or Lord of The Rings that can capture that cultural zeitgeist and have the cred to be taken seriously at the Oscars anymore.
As much as I hate the ceremony, its seems the cred that comes with awards is the only reason we even see those smaller projects unfortunately.

I agree about poor quality hosts (just get Tina & Amy to do it every year), but to your other point, people have complained about some "worthy" people and projects beating popular ones since at least the 1950s- take a look at the names of winners through the decades and you'll go "huh?" at a lot of them, and journalists outside of tinseltown said the same at the time; it's not just a modern phenomenon.

I also think it has a lot to do with the fact that the Oscars are on cable. I think the Oscars once had a place in our hearts, but so much has shifted our perspective from loving 'Everything Hollywood': the exposure of Harvey Weinstein's behaviour (indeed, many people's predatory behaviour) in the film industry; seeing more pressing matters in our world like climate change, inequality and injustice in regard to many demographics, bi-partisan politics and several refugee crises in the world; and now, a pandemic that shut the world down for 2, going on 3, years that has shown us what real heroes look like and the work they do that isn't glamorous nor well paid, but they do it anyway.
And in a much smaller way, the fact that there are infact CAMPAIGNS for films to win awards! How many times have we heard the term 'Oscar upset', and is almost always used in a way that insinuates, '...someone else should have gotten it....' Why have awards if the people who are giving them are just going to bestow them onto the 'wrong' winners anyway?!!
Don't get me wrong: I adore cinema. I am a cinephile, and I do think that there is a place for such awards because though it is not the most important work in the world, it is still indeed work, and storytelling has been intertwined with the human experience since God was a boy.
But we have learned that there are things more important than movies, and now there is no turning back.
Sorry Oscars..... but to everything, there is a season. Time to move on.

No respect for the art of filmmaking with shitty jokes that devalue the creators and films, making light of animation, cutting categories, the failure to honour stunts and casting are still a joke, a bloated show that has been mean-spirited for a while. Couldn't agree more. And often in the past, their jokes spark controversy and get criticized the next day, overshadowing the winners of the night. That's a big problem when your hosts or presenter are upstaging the winners the night after the show. That's not really honoring the nominees or the art they contributed. I think they could regain some of their credibility back if they shy away from these "roast" comedians who only know how to take shots at people and not really do anything fun, creative, or honor the people in the room who should be the focal point of the evening.

Will Smith slapping Chris Rock was totally disproportionate to the insult he perceived to Jada Pinkett-Smith. That being said, if Harvey Weinstein gets to keep his Oscar, I don’t see why Will Smith should have his revoked, particularly since Chris Rock is moving on from the situation.

The Academy isn't taking Smith's Oscar back. He resigned from the Academy, before they asked him to. This only means that Smith won't be able to vote on awards. The majority of people who work in the entertainment industry are not millionaires and in fact many of them live paycheck to paycheck. They bank their entire life on work that is infrequent and dependent on subjective opinion and live lives of struggle. And they earn an honest paycheck just like everyone else. Be honest: how much TV and film did you watch during COVID? I’m betting it was a lot. This kind of format that the Oscars have or even the Oscars itself is fast becoming insignificant. People seem like they will never be satisfied until a Marvel film wins the best picture and then after that we'll start complaining about how every Best Picture nominee is a superhero movie. The sad truth is that what audiences consider great non-franchise films today either don't have the box office numbers to reflect that or the film did terribly with critics. The fact a film with a massive budget and following like Dune managed to snatch so many awards is proof the awards aren't completely out of touch.

This despite that one of the nominees was a serious documentary about escaping a war torn country clearly not a "kid's film". I wish Arcane had been in there just for the arstyle itself to show the attendees that animation is no longer kid's stuff.
Also let's not forget Spiderman No Way Home was snubbed yet instead the only Superhero nominee was Justice League and that was more thanks to a popularity poll than a serious nomination. Seriously if anything Will Smith slapping Chris Rock is the only reason people are even talking about the oscars cause otherwise it was just lackluster and still reeling of not treating all film genres fairly, ESPECIALLY animation.

To quote the internet, "If Will Smith hadn't slapped Chris Rock, I would never have known the Oscars had taken place". And to quote one of my favourite movies, "But the bitter truth we critics must face, is that in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so." This applies just as equally to award shows which claim to recognise "artistic and technical merit in the film industry". Winning an Oscar once meant something. Now we're all quite familiar with the phrase 'Oscar-bait', and Kate Winslet told us that all an actor needs to do to win, is to star in a Holocaust movie.
I'll pay attention to the Oscars when they list their judges and voting process, focus on broadcasting ALL the awards, not just the 'popular' ones, and add awards for STUNT COORDINATOR and STUNTPERSON. Yeah, ok, Tom Cruise will win every year there's a Mission Impossible movie, but damn, the man's earned it, whatever you think of him personally! I have a friend who won the Taurus Stunt Award, but nothing from the Academy, which to me proves that this particular industry's award is falling further and further into public irrelevancy and higher and higher into pretentious hypocrisy.

With the blowing up of corporations like Netflix, making series and movies that are easily as good, if not better, than anything come out of mainstream Hollywood, and social media sites like TH-cam, Instagram and Tiktok allowing anyone, anywhere to make content that can be seen by millions, the only people who *really* care about who wins awards for movies these days are... the people involved in making those movies. It's devolved into an ego-boosting luvvie-party for them - "see, we ARE still the most important industry in the world, and everyone DOES still lap up everything we do! Look - we're awarding ourselves these lovely, shiny trophies to prove it!" COVID, of course, didn't help, because it showed the world that, even when the cinemas close and movie productions take a hiatus, there's still multiple other sources of entertainment to be had out there. These ceremonies are just not as important to the ordinary plebs out there anymore as they are to the highly-paid, highly-priveleged industry luvvies who need their egos stroked on a regualr basis.

The format of the show is simple: a host tells jokes, presenters announce the nominees, and winners give a speech. That is all they need.
But they keep trying to add forced unfunny banter among presenters, appearances by people that have nothing to do with movies of that year, unnecessary performances, and PC/self-righteous speeches that make Hollywood look out of touch. The night is just a showcase for fashion and popularity. And on top of that, it's a boring event broadcast on TV. If they wanted viewers they would broadcast it on TH-cam. At least Superbowl commercials are fun.

The reason the Oscar ratings are slipping is because most of the nominations do not resonate with the audience. We watch shows where we care about the competitors or in this case the nominees and really wonder who will win. The Oscars feel political, the ground breaking moments are few or just not televised and the perspective that having comedians heckle people instead of entertain is truly killing the experience. This is not unique to this year! I don’t want to pretend things were better before. It’s been this way for a long time and now that we have more channel options, we have the ability to just not tune in. Time to take a step back and consider the eligibility standards of nominees and test to see if it yields results that people would actually pay attention to- it’s a new day and new audience, time to think different!

The 2021 ceremony might've been barely watched, but it was the best ceremony in years! I think the academy needs to lean into what movie lovers want to see and celebrate as opposed to trying to create meme-able cringe moments. That's what they did in 2021 and it was great. This year they pursued the tweetable moments and evergreen though they got one out made the whole thing even more embarrassing.
The other thing they need to do imo (that happened accidentally in 2021) is make nominated films stream-able after the noms so we can actually catch up and watch them. There's are all sorts of money and logistic issues that this would cause, but if it's a nomination requirement hollywood would figure it out.
