I started several varieties by winter sowing and all have grown pretty nicely. Good variety of foliage and flowers in that family. 70 plants! Challenge accepted 😂

I love this class, Jessie, haha. I am a Landscape Architect by trade, we use mountain mint in our planting design all the time, I love this realization that it's a great cut flower material as well! I am looking to get some plugs of P. flexuosm and P. tenuifolium too to try in my beds, I love the feathery texture of them.
Oh that's so cool you're a landscape architect by trade! I love absolutely love mountain mint and it's actually in my landscape. I wouldn't say it looks great but... I can cut from it and the deer mostly leave it alone lol
@@bareflowerfarm I just briefly read about it from Missouri Botanical Garden, it seems P. muticum 'is less drought tolerant than most of the other species of Pycnanthemum', 'easily grown in fertile, moist to medium moisture, well-drained soils' - which is to my suprise, I thought they tolerate driness throughout. Now I think about it, Chanticleer Garden has this exact species in their rain garden location and they are thriving!
This video is literally perfect timing. I’m about to start sowing all my fall perennials (oregano, prairie sage, yarrow, and bergamot), but now I’m going to sow my mountain mint too! Super excited! I’m in year zero and trying to grow as much as I can now for next year. I will be starting from seed so we’ll see how it goes! Thank you for your videos! They’re so helpful!

Just put in 50 plugs from farmer Bailey. I’m starting to think I should do some and spread it around like you suggested. I have some hard to grow spots in my landscape so maybe that’s a good thing to try there! Thanks for the video!

I think Pyncnanthemum tenuifolium is a superior looking plant in the foliage and the bloom. Same level of minty smell. It is a clumping mountain mint and doesn't seem as aggressive in the rhizomes and no runners that I have seen in the wild I haven't noticed its aggressiveness. Perhaps it behaves different in the garden.
I garden in Zone 3 but find I can grow many Zone 4 plants so I wonder if I grow mountain mint in a sheltered micro-climate, they would survive. I am new to this flower farm business and I greatly appreciate that you share your knowledge with us newbies. Your practical, no nonsense approach to this business is refreshing and so helpful. Please continue to make these educational videos. I don't know how you manage all you do with a new baby. You are fabulous!
I would actually do an experiment- grow some in a sheltered micro climate and grow some just outside unprotected. I have a feeling it could survive unprotected. And thanks for the kind words!

My one hesitation is that I’m hoping to move to a spring and fall only CSA model and didn’t know if it would be usable at the right time. But it sounds like if I cut it back, I should get a flush for end of August/September time?

We tried cooking with this mint once and let's just say we never cooked with it again. I'm sure you could use it for tea but if you have an expectation of how tea should taste (ie peppermint or spearmint), you may be disappointed lol
Hi!! They are different. That’s “hairy” mountain mint 😅 BUTTTT still a good filler. It has more obvious white clustering flowers than muticum and adds a good pop of color. You should definitely grow them if you have the seed!

The problem is I don't know when to start to plant seeds to be able to use it in that dates 😢. Can you give me some advice? Thank you in advance ❤
Procut sunflowers are typically 50-60 days to maturity. If it is hot and there's alot of day light, then it could expedite to around 45-50 days. But if you're entering into fall where the days are shorter and it's going to get cooler, I would allow for up to 70 days. Hope this helps!

This is a really great point!! That probably definitely has contributed to the popularity of mountain mint, in addition to how bulky the mountain mint looks. I personally think it provides more interest than eucalyptus and is easier to grow since it is so hardy!
Have you tried propagating it at all? I have a robust plant in a container but I'd like to try planting some in the landscape from that. Can I take a cutting and get it to root in water or soil or is there a way to take some of the root system of the plant? Thanks for any suggestions!
I actually haven't but I would assume you could propogate this mint from a cutting to root. I would try that first and if I do it, I will let you know!

Sorry for the delay in response! You can get a second flush. The stems won't be as robust and long but certainly still usable!!
