I love the lakes, and Ive been lucky enough to have seen them all, and regularly boat on Michigan, Huron, Erie and St. Clair. I love the state of Michigan, and I put up with the winters, just to be around the lakes and connecting waters once boating/fishing season starts. I was bummed that they took lake St. Clair off the list of the great lakes, but I guess it doesnt really matter, its still there lol.
Ehh Im from the Midwest so I see that Great Lakes way to often I prefer swimming in the Atlantic Ocean because the ocean is far more blue and clearer (depending on where u are)

The lakes upriver are at a much higher elevation than the surface of the ocean, so locks are used to permit ships to travel up to them as they can't normally navigate the natural falls and rapids
Is the boat rubbing that right rail as it comes into the dock ? And this has got to have bow thrusters ? Yes . But wow you have to have nerves of steal to operate one these beast .
What are these orange booms as seen at 4:30 (raised) at the right hand, 7:26 (raises beyond the bridge) at the right hand and then one at 14:00 and also at 19:15 (both raised) on the left hand of the canal? What´s the purpose of those?
They're sensor booms, to make sure the ship is clear of the opening lock gates. There's a cable that runs along the boom like a bowstring, and if it contacts the ship anywhere then the ship has to move clear of the gates.
I have steered 730 foot freighters through these locks and the Welland Canal, many times. lol.. Actually, it's really the St. Lawrence Seaway. System.. :-)

This wasn't at the Soo, the St. Mary's only has one set of locks and they're much larger than these. based on the geography I'd guess it's the St Lawrence river, but I haven't seen enough of it to know exactly where.
The only locks in the Great Lakes sector of the GREAT LAKES ST LAWRENCE SEAWAY SYSTEM is the Soo Locks. The St Lawrence Seaway sector extends from St Lambert QC up through the Welland Canal to mid-Lake Erie. 7 locks to Welland are St. Lambert, Cote-Ste-Catharine, Lower Beauharnois, Upper Beauharnois, Snell (US) & Eisenhower (AKA IKE - US) and then Iroquois Lock. They used to tie up the ships with ropes to hold it a safe distance from the walls of the lock, but the yellow devices hold it in place nowadays. Less manpower needed.

Depends on the system and your cargo. U.S. locks are controlled by the Corp of Engineers so ships can lock through for free.
