Well done. I often thought what we are all missing from each other's culture and history and even if we learn the words we cant get it fully because we didn't grow up with it. Alas we can only live one life and have others live the rest.
@@George.Andrews. even if we can't understand it fully, as long as we have the mind set to appreciate other's language, history and culture, that would be enough
I'm a decade too late but i really can't agree with that. To me, it sounds like he's singing from the perspective of someone in an abusive or unhealthy relationship. The arrow metaphor is the perfect example of this; he's been struck by an arrow that is slowly killing him, but it would also be extremely painful and harmful to remove, like it is to break up with an abusive partner
I love how the audience are laughing at first, but then they stop. It's like they realise that actually, this is kinda the most beautiful song they'll ever hear.
Yeah definitely, the song has a silly vibe at first because he's just introducing the joke, but then it starts to set in that the song is really speaking to the truth of what falling in love is really like
That's total nonsense. Haven't you heard of young married couples? Or people who marry in their early twenties? My parents married when they were in their twenties.
I would laugh so much at this song, because it is hilarious. But it is actually such a beautifully written song, and just as beautifully delivered by the brilliant Tim Minchin, that all you can do is listen and appreciate the musical genius.
+Ryan Hyde I totally agree. The comedy behind the metaphoric relationship between love and illness is secondary to the uniqueness of it's value as an actual love-song. My GF (of 4 years now ^^) is studying to be a pathologist. She totally loved this when I let her listen to it.
+Leonard Katz I agree with you. Bo Burnham is one of my favorite comedians because, like Tim, he goes beyond just comedy. I'm not sure what else to call what they do besides performance, but they can both be very funny and very thought provoking at the same time. The endings of Bo Burnham's two latest comedy shows, "what." and "Make Happy" really show this too. And for what it's worth, "Make Happy" just came out on Netflix a couple of days ago. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a try when you have an hour to spend.
Couldn't agree more James, what I found incredible about Make Happy's ending was how it used the comedy format to make his point even more poignant; evoking a slight sense of guilt for laughing for the past hour.
This is one of Tim's songs that perfectly explains why he shifted towards a more "serious" career in the last few years. His composing talent and overall musical ability were far more worthy of recognition than the comedy genre was capable of conceding him. Another great example (perhaps the best and most obvious one) is the song "Beauty"
That's true but part of this song's brilliance is it's also really funny and comedic in its macabre-ness- there's definitely when something special when Tim manages to do everything all at once. No coincidence that Matilda and especially Groundhog day are also quite comedic, if they were dead serious it wouldn't really be a good match for Tim I don't think
I get wet eyes every time I hear "White Wine in the Sun" I think his greatest gift is to give us a giggle while he makes us feel profound emotions. Sometimes that little giggle makes even the most painful emotion a touch more bearable, and that is beautiful all by itself.
"The successful removal of you would probably kill me too" was the first line in this song that caused me to tear up, and I kept crying throughout. Tim is such a well-rounded musician and composer, and often comedy and drama lift each other up so that they both shine brighter.
It's been two years since your comment, but I saw Tim live this summer and reading that really resonated with me. He explained at the start that while there would still be humour in the show, he was trying to take a more "serious" route with his music. This song and Beauty (he opened with that one) were perfect examples of what you said.
***** He truly IS a fucking genius! Not only a musical scholar, bordering on supernatural, his world view and political position are as spot-on as I could ever hope to aspire to. Its too bad that politicians and world leaders are really just puppets and cannot truly bring change to the problems we face, but if they could, a man like Tim would surely provide as good a step forward as ANY of the baffoons that hold those positions currently might EVER even stumble upon by mistake! Coming from a comedian's career I'm sure it could never happen, but can you imagine how great it would be........
I don't like his voice. He sure has complete control over it, and knows how to use, but his natural tone is just so boring to me. Kind of a testament of how good he is that after all these years I keep coming back to one of my least favorite voices when I'm such a sucker for a nice voice.
My wife and I had our first dance at our wedding to this song. Every time i hear it now it brings a tear to my eye and takes me straight back to that day. love this man and honestly don't know a more simple yet perfect description of love. :)

lolol. That would mean you listen to it at least 2684 times per day. Which means over 10,000 minutes per day listening, and there only 1440 minutes per day. So therefore you are not defying physics and time to listen to tim minchin that long. Since you're not defying time, then i find you to not be a TRUE Tim minchin fan!! POSER!

Now I find it hard to see
This untreated dose of you has blinded me
I should've consulted my local physician
I'm stuck now forever with this tunnel vision
My periphery is through
Wherever I look now, all I see is you
When we first met you seemed fickle and shallow
But my armour was no match for your poison arrow
You are wedged inside my breast
If I tried to take you out now I might bleed to death
I'm feeling short of breath
You grew on me like a tumour
And you spread through me like malignant melanoma
I guess I never knew
How fast a little mole can grow on you

Everyday, I come back to this, my favourite song, and I see the view counter trickle upwards.
It's never enough. :P
im convinced that there's no NEW viewers, its just everyone that has already heard it, and love it so much like you and myself, that have to come back to it at least 1-2 times a day.
TheAtheistChef Nope. NEW fan here -- late to the party and now catching up.
" SHHH... dont tell everyone!!! You're killing my theory!!"
Welcome aboard the awesome train that is Tim Minchin
TheAtheistChef I think the view counter only includes the past week, as I am sure that I have listened to this song at least 980,000 times in the last three years. It's that or pressing the replay button doesn't add to the view counter.
POSER!
If a guy sang this to me... I can't say what I'd do, children might read this.
But srsly this song is so. Fucking. Beautiful. On the brink of tears now.
you know it's a love song when tim says it's a love song
Well . . . he says the same thing about "Inflatable You".
Because that's also a song about love 😉❤
I agree. It speaks to how warped I am that I consider this the most romantic song I've ever heard.
Never knew he was such a good singer! Wow he has it all:
Nice voice,
Beautiful eyes,
Hilarious sense of humour and
Amazing music talent
:D
My girlfriend sent this song to me. I laughed and then was deeply moved. Now it's one of my favorite love songs.
The contrast between what is said and what is meant is amazing. This is definitely one of the best love songs I've ever heard.
This is the best love song of all times.
I'm not sure if this was intentional but I really appreciate the part at 2:22 where he sings "untreated glaucoma" and the camera lens is out of focus
I love how everyone starts laughing, but then realize this is a very beatiful song and just keep listening in awe.
2:23 Hey editor, I see what you did here.
Omg I didn't even notice that the camera blurred out right when Tim said he had glaucoma, that's such good attention to detail!
I only just noticed it on my own today, 7 years after hearing the song for the first time. Can't believe I'm only just now seeing your comment after the fact, haha
My, a lab nerds, favorite love song, this is exactly how I would describe the love for my husband ❤ would have loved to walk down the aisle under this song 😊
There is only one word to describe this song. Beautiful.
so true
Tim Minchin is an absolute genius.. i have become one with the repeat button
Can’t believe I only just stumbled onto this brilliant talent had to turn my tv off after cuz there’s nothing out there that can follow Tim Minchin... completely blown away
Yes! I think the awe starts when he says "when ever you're around I can't get out of bed". That's when the song goes from laughter to strange beauty.
I'm so proud of myself for being able to play this on the piano
The best love song ever written.
This is the single most disturbingly beautiful song I have ever heard.
When i first heard this song,I couldn't laugh, regardless of the metaphors and similes, the composition had an uncanny knack of reaching me like no love song ever.So sincere, reached part of me most personal relationships haven't thus far, thankyou for helping me to feel.
