    Wow, timely updated review! This is probably the only e-ink channel with updated Scribe review. Really curious about how the PDF cropping feature has been improved.

  • @vivjay67
    @vivjay67 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    My main issue with it is unless you send a searchable pdf to email, you can't search for specific words on your scribe.
    I'm in the middle of a big project and I take lots of notes. I try to group them together in folders, but if I need to find something specific, I need to open each notebook to find what I need.
    On the iPad you can search for a word and it'll find it in your handwritten notes. I hope they add this in a future update

    Tantalizing. Searchable handwritten PDF’s finally give the Scribe a feature that makes it “more than” other devices! The team at reMarkable must be slapping themselves. Still, my overwhelming impression is a lack of vision. A touchscreen device that doesn’t let me use my finger to drag and drop pages within a notebook, or notebooks within a list? A note-taker with Bluetooth that can’t connect to a BT keyboard? Searchable PDF handwriting translation and export to email, but not to cloud storage or social media? SIXTEEN YEARS of development, and Kindle still lacks basic browser functions??? A fabric cover that starts fraying after a few days of light handling? I could go on, but this is why I returned mine after 3 weeks.

    • @steverolfeca
      @steverolfeca 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GaryLangEngr Incorrect. Three weeks was plenty long enough to confirm that I want to partly replace my iPad with a 10-11” e-ink tablet. Love the 300dpi Carta 1200 B&W display, but I need real Android app capability. The SongbookPro chart app is a must for me. Currently waiting for Supernote’s next release, reMarkable 3, Scribe v2, maybe Boox Note Air3 monochrome?

    • @steverolfeca
      @steverolfeca 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GaryLangEngr if I could have grabbed a leftover Note Air 2+ for $300-400 USD, I might have pulled the trigger, but I won’t pay $500+ shipped for Android 11. Amongst the current models, the Air3C is too battery-limited and too dark w/out the backlight, so I’m stuck waiting for new model releases.

    Thanks for reporting on this! Ive had a Kindle Scribe since early this year. and the main problem that precluded it from being included in my academic workflow was the way it handled transparency and gradients. Ive used the 5.16.3 version for the longest time, and text superimposed on transparent images and gradients would always be rendered as an opaque shape in the following the outline of the background graphic. Looks like they fixed this in 5.16.5. Happy reading!

    Interesting that the feature they developed will also allow them to harvest our data more easily

    • @numberedpages
      @numberedpages 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Exactly my thoughts. It’s not even paranoia, just lack of naïveté. The fact that notes are automatically sent to amazon via whispersync, and also have to be sent to them for export is such a red flag for anyone who cares about data privacy or security. It’s one thing to have an optional cloud sync feature, it’s another to make it impossible to access your own data without using it.

    I have a scribe 16 gig. I think the scribe itself is great. The big improvement needed is to increase functionality of the kindle app. It would be nice to add notes on my phone to my scribe notebooks. I can at least see my notebooks on my kindle app in view only which is nice if I have made notes when I go into a store or something.

    I really think this is a fantastic addition and I agree with you Voya. What continues to baffle me is the scribed development team only implementing the ability to attach the PDF. If you select convert to text and email not convert to text and send to my email it’s a little nuances that are inconsistent and confusing and frankly frustrating. Because when I convert something, I typically want to send it to my personal email, but this will not work in attaching a searchable PDF.

    I hope Boox is paying attention. The word-by-word handwriting recognition coupled with on-page location (and "as character text" selection/copy/paste) is something I had hoped Boox had when bought my original NA, but even with the recent updates for my NA3C, the "text" search of handwritten notes is a bit sketchy and slow. And I have "Automatically recognize handwriting in background" enabled. IMO eNotebooks need this feature, but in a pseudo-realtime-ish as you write (or after short delay), not only as an export option. I do not like Amazon, but it is good to see progress on this category of core "pad-of-paper replacement/enhancement" features.

Are these available elsewhere? Thanks!

    7:30 I laughed so hard at your reaction, and I totally agree with you - that are the moments, why your reviews are so entertaining and honest. 😊
    Even though I'm a bit worried that Amazon might lose interest in further development, I like the Scribe more and more, it might be a good middle way between Supernote and Boox Note Air 3 (C). In my opinion, Supernote is (unfortunately) too expensive and Boox Note Air 3 (C) without a clear focus of use, too many options can also be a disadvantage, especially if they are not implemented perfectly.
    16:10 Improving and optimizing firmware is cheaper than developing a new device or design. Furthermore, perfect firmware increases the sales of devices that are already on the market. manufacturers just need to do more usability testing and listen to users and reviewers. It's so simple, but for some reason, most manufacturers don't get it right.

      @jdpruente as it's meant to be a note-taking device, and it was advertised as having fully support for PDF, yes that is exactly what I mean. You can't load a pdf on it and write like you can with literally every other note-taking device. Others manage to implement this even if it's poor, but on the scribe, not only must you convert it to their own format to do so, you have to upload it to their servers for the conversion.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No, for several reasons:
      1. To my knowledge, there's no way to pair Bluetooth devices, like a wireless page turner to it.
      2. It doesn't allow writing on PDF files directly, only of their KTX converted files, and those can be quite unreliable, as it was seen in the past.

      Yes I do, but I don't play from sheets. I use them only while learning the songs. Once I do, I learn them and play them by heart. But yes, if you were to use a device so that you can play directly from the sheets, I would advise faster devices such as Boox devices. NeoReader in Speed refresh mode flips pages almost instantaneously, and it supports bluetooth devices for flipping pages, and has a front light, should you need it.

    (07:00) I don't think there is anything wrong with the multi page Add functionality. It works the way I would expect it to. If you want to add only one page, then select only one page and click Add. If you want to add a page after a number of other pages, how else would you do it than to select all the pages after each of which you wanted to insert a new page?

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Offer a selection for the user to choose from, add new page after each selected page, or add new pages after the last page of the selection.
      Please name me one practical example, so that I can understand better, when you would want to use that feature the way it works now, that you insert an empty pages, effectively between a sequence of existing pages? The only example I can see are, for example, if you are preparing a really large notebook, and you first write chapters you wish to have in the notebook, and then you wish to add an empty page after each chapter. But other than such, very specific situations, when would you actually want it to do that?

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the way it works because it works like similar commands on computers. If you select two or more files in the Mac and select Duplicate, it will duplicate each file, i.e. it will recursively copy and paste each file selected. In Windows, it is literally a copy and paste operation (it takes two steps). In Windows you can select two or more files and choose Copy as Path and then when you do a paste operation, you will get a path from the root drive to each file on separate lines, i.e. it recursively reads the paths, copies them, and pasts them.
      On the Kindle, if you want to just insert one page after the last of a group of selected files, why would you select more than the one file you want to insert after? In my opinion, that is user error, not programming error.
      Now, why one would want to do this is a different question. I suggested you would want this functionality if you are printing double sided, because one generally wants major sections (like chapters) to begin on odd numbered pages. I can think of another use I would personally put it to: I would write a list of questions that might take several pages in the notebook, then after each logical section, I would want to insert pages to record the responses to the questions. Inserting the blank pages for responses is easier after you have written the questions.
      But, like any tool, whether it is useful or not depends on your own workflow and is subjective to the user. Whether something is programmed to operate inconsistently to other similar programs is more of an objective question.@@MyDeepGuide

      @@MyDeepGuideI think it's working as it should, too. Example:
      1. I need to add a page after a block of selected pages, i. e. one page of notes: I just click on the last one of the block then add the page, I don't need to select all the block.
      2. I need to insert a page after each one of selected pages, i. e. a notes page after any monthly view calendar page: I select all the pages and add the new one after each of them with one only operation.
      About the select all pages, I also think that you just move the entire notebook, you don't have to select the pages

    Can someone please help me with a query? I'm considering a kindle and have a question that I can't find answered in online reviews: I need to fill in forms "on the go" while outside so first I need to create the forms in Word doc on my macbook and send to the kindle either as Word or save it as a PDF from Word on my mac and then send to kindle. Then I need to use the kindle to fill in the form while on the road. Finally, I'd like to email it back to my Mac as a completed form Is that possible? Is that possible and if so, what format will the final version be in that I send back to my Mac? Thanks in advance

    • @gutenbird

      That seems possible as you can annotate a PDF and I’m guessing you would create a PDF for the kindle and then also have a PDF as the end result. I will have to test this as I just got my scribe.

    We could assimilate them all into one company to create the perfect e-ink device by implementing the best features, but then that would annul the very competition that innovates!

    • @Zwiesel66

      It could be so easy, they just have to listen to user feedback and then tweak the firmware. Each of these companies could quickly be way ahead of all their competitors if they listened and responded quickly.

      I guess Amazon feels that such functionality is beyond the capacity of an average Kindle user, so they don't want to burden the users with such complexities and distractions. (This is sarcasm, in case someone is confused).

    Is the Remarkable still the better device just for note taking? I have heard as it’s older it can be a lot slower the Scribe if you have multiple layers in use? I already have a Kindle Paperwhite so really don’t need another e reader. Can either the Scribe or Remarkable make lists that upload to Todoist app or Apple Notes?

    • @crash331
      @crash331 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My remarkable is pretty good for notetaking, but I have ddvk installed. The navigation and UI isn't the greatest without ddvk. I have since switched to an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil just because of the versatility. I already needed to carry an iPad for work apps and lugging around 2 devices just wasn't great, but I do miss the feel of writing on the reMarkable. I'll pick it up every once in a while and consider adding it back to my workflow, but in the end, the superior versatility (but worse writing feel) wins out on the iPad.
      Also, one limitation that I totally forgot about that is sort of a dealbreaker for using my rM2 in 2024....the search does not search through your handwriting at all. For some reason, I thought it did, just not in a pdf like the Scribe does in this video. But no, you cannot search handwritten notes at all in rM2. You really have to have a tight organization method of notetaking to go back and find anything.

    I just got mine. Very excited but pen is not working on arrival, as it draws while hovering in the air. Literally unusable. That said the hardware is very good. But features are shockingly few. Would be nice to be able to use emails, check news paper and have a split screen mode to read book and take notes separately.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You simply need to reseat the pen Nib. Take it out of the pen, and then place it back in, so that it goes all the way in. Whenever you have the "ghost writing" symptom, this is the very first thing to check, as it is the case in 99.9% of cases.

    • @AkamaiOkole
      @AkamaiOkole 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Here is what I did and it worked. 1) Take out the nib (you may need tweezers for this); 2) In a small arc, hit the tip of the pencil into your other palm several times. I think this jars loose whatever is causing the problem; 3) re-insert the nib, and try again. I search for 20 minutes on Google and was just about to return it when I found this solution: worked for me the first time. Good luck !!

      Yes, it’s not really just your pdf at that point, but you can write on it then send it out of the kindle to your email as a pdf. I don’t see the finished product as anything other than a written on PDF.
