In Alaska the natives cut down branches with pine needles attached and pile them up underwater making it easier for fish to lay there eggs.

Damn I love nature. Just because animals don't communicate like us or do things like we do doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. They just have a different life with different priorities.
Animals live by instinct, especially simple ones with small brains including fish, etc. They are nature's gift to us more complex beings. But you are right, they are built upon a different priority in this world, and that is to keep multiplying and contribute to the food chain.

That is an incredible scene. Those fish formed a strange habit of mating and laying eggs. They are fish. Why do they have to beach themselves to mate but not in the water? Ocean birds have a great chance to feast on them. Truly amazing nature.

Yanky Jatt Actually this happens on the very busiest beaches in SoCal. Many ppl come just to watch and pick the fish. There's Soo many million's of fish along the shore that ppl leave them alone. Plus it's not pleasant swimming with all these slimy fish.

1. They are delicious pan-fried. That’s the traditional way to cook them.
2. The grunion run has been a Southern California spring and summer ritual for generations. You go to the beach with a bucket and grab as many as you can with your hands. You’re not allowed to use nets or any other tools to catch them. There are local and state regulations restricting when you can take them. When I was a kid, teenagers would clean and cook them right on the beach. They’d bring cooking supplies and other food and make a party of it. But now fires aren’t allowed on the beaches, so everyone just takes them home to cook.
