Damn I love nature. Just because animals don't communicate like us or do things like we do doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. They just have a different life with different priorities.
Animals live by instinct, especially simple ones with small brains including fish, etc. They are nature's gift to us more complex beings. But you are right, they are built upon a different priority in this world, and that is to keep multiplying and contribute to the food chain.
Nature continues to blow my mind on a daily basis.
Only one and only God created and planned this

Grunion run during daylight hours! Where on Earth does this occur (I did not hear the narrator mention a location)? Grunion spawning season happens along the coast of Southern California, too, but can only be witnessed at night. Nearing midnight twice a month (new moon and full moon) from March to August, the grunion wriggle ashore by the thousands to mate, using the highest tides of the month to deposit eggs (and fertilize them) in the sand as far ashore as possible. This BBC video is the first time I have seen the grunion spawn in daylight.
this is why you should never mate in public

The birds are intelligent enough to let the fish lay eggs before eating them, ensuring themselves more meals in the future.
I like the way you think.
If only the rest of the human race was this intelligent. “Why collect various clutches of eggs laid naturally over several generations when you can just kill an entire generation as soon as they become fertile and rip them out just once?” F*cking capitalism.
If only, they are potential food from the moment they appear on the beach, their strategy is to appear in great numbers, overwhelming predators.
Is this what we call sustainable?
Im sure there are birds who ate fishes while they wriggled, but they went extinct millions of years ago. These birds that “respected” the fish orgy and ate them after sex, survived. Like what you said

Thank u so much BBC EARTH . Great job as usual
It's amazing how animals are intelligent enough to know these things. The shore is the last place I would expect a fish to lay its eggs.
In Alaska the natives cut down branches with pine needles attached and pile them up underwater making it easier for fish to lay there eggs.

Let me tell you just this, god is not an old human being with a lot of power. Of course we as humans try to imagine god in ways that corresponds with what we know and what we can see with our eyes. No, god is spirit, god is eternal in every way and since we live in the world he created we can not describe or even imagine him in a proper way. The bible is just the way he chose to reveal himself to us.

The "magic" of nature. We are so blessed to have creatures like these that is also a source of food for us humans and other animals to survive. I hope this will continue on for the next multiple generations to come.
That is an incredible scene. Those fish formed a strange habit of mating and laying eggs. They are fish. Why do they have to beach themselves to mate but not in the water? Ocean birds have a great chance to feast on them. Truly amazing nature.
