Mr Grossmann made one for me 3 years ago and it’s great! Its not about it sounds better or worse then IRs. It’s about forging your own tone by yourself with ease and for real. And changing the speaker takes less then a minute! Great to see fatbox on your channel. It deserves more recognition than it had to this day. And check out the OAKBOX - it looks stunning! Cheers from Poland!
Have had one for years now and also super impressed by it. Makes recording real speakers just so much easier if you can‘t blast a cab. Also changing speakers is soo easy. Just very well designed in general!🙌🏼
Thanks for this Video, Heck Yes!! Been waiting over a year to see someone with a Grossman. 100% agree with you - nothing against IRs, modeling, etc., but there is nothing quite like capturing a microphone moving air in the middle of the night while the kiddos sleep. Excited to see the upcoming speaker shootouts. In addition to any Celestion/Eminence speakers (they're great!), would love to see Jensen (tornado / electric lightning) and others, considering your uniquely great playing style and amps. Thanks again Jon, loved this one!
I ran the Randall ISO box for a while and it was good but I still had issues with the low frequencies. The attenuation was great, but the resonance of the low frequencies still bothered my apartment neighbors. Even though I didn't run it super loud, I had a hard time getting a quiet setup. I enjoyed using it for recording isolated speakers. I did also change it up slightly after a bit, with some extra sound deadening material inside the sealed cabinet, as well as some on the top lid.
Had a Grossmann more then 10 years ago but it wasnt Fat like this one. I sold it because i couldnt get that Cabthumb out of it, would love to try it out again.
@@SonicDriveStudioThe Redback (in my opinion) really doesn’t impress until it’s cranked hard so this will be a good environment for it. I really want to get my hands on a neo creamback soon. As much as I love my scumbacks, I think the creamback could give it a run for its money. ..or for more money.
I would love to see a video showcasing Weber speakers. I feel they are very under represented here on TH-cam. Like most I tended to use cabinets loaded with celestions of some kind. I transitioned from a gigging musician to recording and music production. After almost 10 years I really missed the crative process of playing in a band. I didn't want to haul my 4x12 back and forth from my studio to rehearsal so I bought a used Avatar 4x12 that had been loaded with 75w ceramic Weber Silver Bells. I was presently surprised at the sound I was able to achieve. The amount of customization that Weber offers is ridiculous. Most speakers are offered in a variety of wattage options, ceramic or alnico magnets, and different construction methods. For such an awesome speaker company I still don't understand why they fly under the radar. I certainly didn't pay them much attention until buying that cabinet.
Please of course do an IR from it to compare but can you also compare it to an IR of the same speaker into a normal cab? Then we would hear if the iso cab is more detailed or if the normal cab IR is just as good. Great videos, thank you that one is very original. 🎉
Love that you bring real speakers into the game. What a cool tool. After figuring out that the tone i was chasing, wasn't too far off what i eventually got together as improvement at first, the youtube world brought speakers to my attention. Last week i shot out four different speakers to settle on 3. A g12t-75 + greenback in a 2x12 and a cramback H for a semi open back 1x12. But the curiosity for speakers is still going. So i'm excited to checkout your shootouts, especially since your sounds are conistently good. I think i like what i've heard here today the most. for now. Could totally be bias too.

The million $ question is (as I’m just switching from speakers in the room to IRs) is it all worth it compared to a good selection of IRs, speaking strictly from a resulting tone perspective?
My only concern with this is that the speaker is pointed up and speakers are designed to shoot forward. The actual weight of the cone could change the sound a little.
It sounds more focused and present but I don't know if it's actually improved the sound quality, possibly made worse. There's a weird reflective/hollow sound in the mids that isn't very good. Interesting video nonetheless.

IRs do not respond dynamically. That's their downfall IF you are playing/recoring dynamically... Universal Audio says they have addressed that with their OX/Ox Stomp. I use IRs witht the best IR loader out there (Strymon Iridium with amp-sim turned off permanently...) as well as the UA Ox Stomp. I have to give the edge to the Ox Stomp. Now, having said, all of that, I also own a Rivera Silent Sister iso-cab loaded with a made in China Celestion Vintage 30... I tried micing it with various combinations of the celebrities of 'guitar micing world', including the top of the line SM57/R121 combo held together in a purpose built dual-mic holder... Lessons learned: 1. Do not be stupid: you do NOT place a figure-8 mic (the Royer R121) inside an iso-cab. The back side of the Royer R121 ribbon mic picked up the nasally sound of the top portion of the enclosure inside the iso-cab, and there was no EQ solution in the world to remove that... The SPL inside the iso-cab could be a problem for the actual 'ribbon' too - but I controlled for that. 2. Do not be greedy: Those who are fond of that 'distance with mic and speaker to let everything breathe..' conviction - yeah, I hear you but NOT INSIDE AN ISO-CAB!!! All that the distance gives you is the 'gift' of hearing more of the nasally ambience of the enclosure, and less of the speaker's direct sound. If you want the convenience of an iso-cab, you gotta give up that 'breathing' obsession 3. You BETTER LIKE that CLOSE-MICed-CAB tone, cause the best results you will get will be by moving those mics really really close to the speaker, and rejecting as much of the nasally enclosure tone as possible 4. Two SM57s, using the FREDMAN technique, with a purpose-built double mic holder give phenomenal results! Really, although I own more expensive/more exotic mics, this is my 'go to' Cheers!
Interesting post. I have been experimenting with close-miking for several years now. I was wondering, how much distance from the grill cloth (with just one SM57) do you find ideal to get that "distance with mic and speaker to let everything breathe" thing? In case it matters, I record strictly classic metal, standard tuning, nothing too extreme.
@ I take it you are talking about mixing a regular, not iso-cab. Sadly, due to volume limitations even when the neighbors are away, I mostly stick to my 2-3 inch rule from the grill. I happen to 1. Like the close-mixed cab tone 2. Almost always add some mild plate reverb even when just noodling (CXM 1970). The onl time I might go up to 5 inches is if I am using my R121 to record clean tones. I don’t think I have seen too many players go more than 3-4 inches recording heavy metal; classic rock, different story. Cheers!
The problem with these is all the crazy reflections you’re getting off the box. If you were to make one of these with 4 inch thick rock wool around all edges then I’d consider using it. But as made, no way.

Also agree. I much prefered the non eq one. Much more natural
Testing with something like Mixing Link from Eventide with pedals would be great, or if you just tried it and said “that works well too”.:)
What is that?
@ Takes mic level and you can put fx pedals in its loops, you can mix fx into your signal.
I am very surprised to hear that companies are still doing those, it’s like selling analog cameras in the age of the smart phones.

Lessons learned:
If you want the convenience of an iso-cab, you gotta give up that 'breathing' obsession
3. You BETTER LIKE that CLOSE-MICed-CAB tone, cause the best results you will get will be by moving those mics really really close to the speaker, and rejecting as much of the nasally enclosure tone as possible
4. Two SM57s, using the FREDMAN technique, with a purpose-built double mic holder give phenomenal results! Really, although I own more expensive/more exotic mics, this is my 'go to'
Cheers!
Cheers!
why doesnt this mini fridge open
The fridge
I think it's cool ;)
Thats a lot of money for a box lol. I kind of get it for function but its still $1K for an empty mdf box.
The problem with these is all the crazy reflections you’re getting off the box. If you were to make one of these with 4 inch thick rock wool around all edges then I’d consider using it. But as made, no way.
Before plugins I was dreaming about something like this. Now you give it to the people?Too late...
We all have different preferences. Still love IRs, it's all good
