A little late, but just wanted to say how much I appreciate your recognition of our veterans. What a great idea to make a special pen and pass on to a veteran. I am just getting started in pen turning, but will make it a point to make a pen just to give to a vet. Thanks for the inspiration.
I realize that this is an older video but your idea of giving to the vets is a great one. I didn’t serve but my father in law and both of my boys have. I appreciate the freedoms that their sacrifice affords me. Well done Bob.
I know its an old video, but I've just seen it. I absolutely love the "give away to a vet" plug. I am a 20yr Navy vet and things like this mean the world to me. Thanks again!
I know this video is old. At this point it appears to be five years old. Just like most Americans, I know that veterans have given a lot, have sacrificed a lot, and basically when someone signs up for the military, they have increased their odds of dying at an earlier age than they would have otherwise. My main point is that I want to thank you for reminding me what a huge sacrifice both veterans and their families make and have made to protect all of us. I also think it’s awesome that you were doing something concrete to show your thanks, and multiplying that gift of thanks in such a creative manner.
Thank you Scot, I know of many people who have made pens because of this video and given them to veterans. I’m thankful for what I have and wanted to show my appreciation. Regards, Bob
I to make pens. Have been for over 25 years. I finally glued my thumb to a blank. CA glue dribbled down onto it and I did not notice. Note to self: keep plenty on the Uncure fluid around and it is great to have the wife help un-stick the blank...after she stops laughing.
I want one!!! I am relatively new wood turner. I’ve made about 20 pens so far. I would LOVE to do this project, and turn a blank for a vet! Very cool idea to say thank you to our veterans all over the country.
Excellent idea Bob, we can’t thank our veterans enough for the sacrifices they’ve made for our freedoms. I want one. Thank you for all the great content, I’ve learned tons watching your videos.
Great pen from Honor Flight cutoffs and a beautiful finish. As a 29 year vet, I want to thank you for doing that. My daughter who does all my shopping these days said she saw you at the Garland Rockler store yesterday but you were teaching a class and she didn't want to bother you.
Hello Paul, Don’t tell her this but that wasn’t me. I was at work in Indiana all day yesterday. I wish I was at Rockler teaching a class. Thank you for your service. Regards, Bob
I think that over the years, that I have watched all of your videos. This is just another fine example of why you are a Master pen maker. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
Oh I would live one and easy to give to a vet, even if I don't look in the mirror. I am 25 minutes from ft Campbell and still know several people out there. Love your videos and I have learned a lot thanks Bob
Sure wish I'd seen this video in time to get one of your blanks!! But because of your idea! I turned a red white and blue pen last night and i will carry it until i bump into a vet and it will be given to them!!!
Just a few questions. Sanding with the metal bushes on, usually, in my experience, ends up with the metal from the bushings bleeding into the grain of the wood. Therefore leaving a darker grey circle at the ends. Applying CA to the blanks with the metal bushings still on would leave it stuck firmly to the bushings.
Just place if a thin coat of C/A as a sanding sealer won’t usually glue the bushings to the lathe. If it does, tap the bushing on the lather bed and it will come lose. Regards, Bob
I would have loved one, but obviously I’m too late to the game, but, you do have a new follower! Love your idea of handing the outcome to a random vet! Thank you four supporting us vets!
Good morning Bob ! Just finished viewing your video on cut offs ! For some time now in have been saving bunch of cut offs and will try and make a pen using your video to guide me ! Thanks for the tip enjoy looking at you videos ! Have a good week ! Vic from Val-Comeau Newbrunswick Canada 👍
Love the blanks and the idea behind them! As the son of a AF veteran I am deeply moved by the idea. I live in eastern NM home of Cannon AFB special operations base. I would love to receive one of your blanks and give it to someone that would be much appreciated by it. Thanks Bob for the great videos.
Thank you Nick, I’ve already given them away. You can still turn one on your and pass it along to a veteran. I’m challenging everyone to do that. Regards, Bob
Super idea. Have been saving pieces also for the same purpose. I like how you put them together with the CA and the tube. Probably will do the same with a 7mm slimline pen
Hey Bob. Wish I had seen this back when you made those blanks. I know several Vets that would have loved a pen. Still a cool looking pen and an idea for me to turn. Still getting my shop setup and doing my chemo treatments but I have some ides for some pens. Take care my friend.
Man that’s awesome I would love to have one but waiting for my lathe but I rather someone who is not a veteran, do it, I’m a vet also I was in our volunteer fire department for 24 years and 17 years as a Police Officer but my lathe will soon been in my little shop and can’t wait to start turning. Thank you and all the people helped you for honoring our veterans god bless you.
Hi Bob. Once again, love your videos. I just got my pen mandrel, so will be doing lots of turning of pens. I would love one of your blanks for a Vet. Thank you.
Love making pens like this. I also use my Slimline pen kits that have left over pieces. Gold nib, copper collar, chrome clip, etc. My wife calls them Leftovers. lol Really good for when you want to turn for fun/practice and don't have any full blanks.
I want one Bob. I've got the perfect person in mind, he's served 3 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and we are now friends and work colleagues for the Western Australia Fire Service. All the best mate from Down under. Keep up the awesome channel.

I use all the grits. If I’m MMing C/A then I just lightly use the pads. Do not use much pressure or use the pads for very long. Also, please wipe the blank between each grit. Regards, Bob

Hey Bob,

I've been carving wood signs for two years now and got interested in pen turning to the point that in less than 24 hours of planning, I bought everything I needed to start turning. It's been a week since I started turning pens and I'm getting the hang of it.
Thanks for the videos.

Thank you, I think it’s awesome you jumped right in and started turning.

I'm thinking one of the Thank You Sierra style pens from Exotic Blanks will be a good match.

It should mate perfectly to the 27/64” Blank.

Hi Bob quick question what speed do you turn at when your micro meshing a wood pen. Thanks, Dave
Somewhere around 700 RPMs.
Regards,
Bob
Thanks Bob
Thank you.
I want one. I have many veteran motorcycle riding friends to whom I will be glad to give the finished pen to.
Thank you,
You’re entered.
Regards,
Bob
I noticed the c a on the white bushings, how did you separate from the wood? thanks
Hello Tom,
I pull the blank to the end of the mandrel and allow the bushing to hang over. A little downward pressure and the bushing will release.
There will be a rough edge on the blank so I go back to the belt sander and use my sanding jig to remove it.
Occasionally I put the bushings on the mandrel and use a skew to clean them off.
Regards,
Bob
I want one! I am a veteran myself that loves turning pens. I would easily give this to a vet and some I create myself to vets!
Thank you David,
You’re entered. Thank you for your service.

How did you keep sawdust from one segment contaminating the other segments? Was this when you wiped the raw blank?
After I clean the raw blanks with Denatured Alcohol, I put one coat of thin C/A on them to reduce the cross contamination from the sawdust.
Regards,
Bob
Wonderful job!
Thank you Tracy.
Regards,
Bob
That's exactly how I started with 'segmented' pens. Didn't want to waste all the offcuts. Now I deliberately cut short pieces of wood/acrylic for pens
On that note: How successful have you been inter-mixing acrylic and wood segments into a blank as Bob just demonstrated. Epoxy or CA? I have a lot of cutoffs.
Regards,
Dwight
I've only done a few mixed blanks and I've used to CA, although I would think that epoxy would work ok. After a while, I started cutting the off-cuts at an angle, that makes some interesting features when turned. Have a look on my Facebook page under"Ged's pens 'n things"

Do you use just one grit of micro mesh to finish your finish? If so which grit is that?
I use all the grits. If I’m MMing C/A then I just lightly use the pads. Do not use much pressure or use the pads for very long. Also, please wipe the blank between each grit.

Bob
