Like many who've commented about the movie, Summer of '42, I watched iit ever so many years ago, wow, almost 50 years have passed. A few days ago I took a copy of a recent AARP magazine to lunch and read some articles while having a relaxing meal. There was an article about Jennifer O'Neill and how she's always loved horses. She's established a horse farm in Tennessee that takes in military personal suffering from PTSD and has them spend time around horses, which seems to be therapeutic. There was a photo of her with white hair looking like a grandmother, which I believe she is. This movie, with the combination of her beauty and the lovely music, was unforgettable. And all us males can dream back to our youth and how a friendship with a lady like her would have been very special. And some of you have shared that you, indeed, did have a similar experience during your youth. That's wonderful. I cut the article out of the magazine, taped it together, and sent it, along with a letter, to my granddaughter in Kansas today as she has a horse and really is a horse person. For the past few minutes, perhaps longer, I've been watching some videos or Summer of '42 and listening to the lovely music. Take care and good night.

Interesting comments about this VERY memorable movie that I saw in 1971 when I was 18. I fell in love with it after seeing it for the first time with my date....and she LOVED the movie, too! I also LOVE Kansas!!! It is my most favorite state and I have many friends there.

Beau Film. Histoire émouvante. Belle Musique de Monsieur Michel LEGRAND. Il était amoureux d'elle. Peu importe ce qui s'est passé. La fin du film est triste 😥. Elle est partie triste. Elle lui a laissé une lettre. La maison est vide. Elle ne l'oubliera jamais. Les histoires sentimentales sont souvent tristes. Mais on oublie jamais.

I still get nostalgic and a shed a tear for this film. I remember a similar situation in my youth. I loved someone that sadly was never meant to be. I wept on the train ride home as the rain softly fell. I wonder what became of her, guess I will never know.

For me I saw her again , but we did not speak , it is a long story . She was eight years older than I , she was my grade ten math teacher , we had many non physical ,but intimate moments ,she told me secrets of her personal life . She was married to a divorced man 13 years her senior , he taught at the same school ,she was 23 , I was 15. I did not see her again until 18 years later , we recognized each other but we did not say a word . The funny thing is that I was ,and still am in a relationship with a woman that is 8 years older and a few months older than she was .RIP to her Mrs Diane H, divorced 1951 -2006.

@@geo386 I am most likely out of line , but look her up , you never know , just like the song by Dan Fogelberg -Same Auld Lang Syne . The only reason I did not speak to her , is that her appearance shocked me . I read a magazine article on her son , he is an artist , when I first met her she was just married less than a year , with no children , in her marriage and so happy .Her son spoke of how his mother , my teacher , had died of alcoholism and how she was violent , when he was a little boy , I was so sad because she was like a mom to many of her students , but not to her own children, she was such a classy young lady when I met her . I was very upset, that she died ,but it did explain her appearance when I saw her. Oh how I wish , now thinking back , I would have sent her a gift , or something to thank her for going out of her way for me .I am still kicking myself . Thanks for letting me vent , it still bothers me and I think of her everyday .

@@Jay-vr9ir You are not out of line. I would love to talk to her, although at the time her parents forbade me from staying in touch as they had her life mapped out and I was not to interfere. I do not often tell this much although I just wanted to clarify her parents made it all the more difficult. I still have the fond memory of her in a park on a Spring day. It will have to be enough. Thank you for the response. Oh yes, I like Dan Fogelberg too.

It bring back memories of a broken heart by my first love. Little did I know she had been around the block many, many times. Found out too late. Met a guy that knew her from junior high and said her nick name was old knot hole. Does not hurt anymore and hasn't for years. Just reminds me of what a fool I was and a wasted love and foolish teenage years..

What this leaves is a void that nothing can fill . There is a 50th anniversary discussion with some of the main characters on YT , however Hermie would not take part , maybe still getting over that emotional ending takes longer than half a century .

There was a scene where Hermie & Oscy go upstairs to his Room to write out some Pointers and his Mother's Listening to A Radio Show. I bet my bottom Dollar it was The Guiding Light that debuted on The Radio in 1937.

The books is great also. Very funny and heart warming book. It's a Hilarious book especially chapter 8. I've read and re-read the book 4 times over the years. I just get nostalgic and dust it off and re-read it. I've moved and lost the book so I just re-order it.
      Just some facts.
Herman Raucher (the author) wrote this originally as a Screenplay, and SOLD the screen play to a studio. And the Studio decided to make the movie. Originally, they wanted an 'older woman' to play the part as in 30+ years old.
Then Jennifer O'Neill audition and got the part. But she had reservations about the 'Nudity' because Jenn, didn't want to do nudity. She was assured that the 'scene' would be done 'tastefully and with style' and to "not" show nudity in any erotic or vulgar way.
Hence that last bedroom scene, we never "actually" see them 'making love' it's just left to the viewers imagination.
This screenplay was "actually the author Herman Raucher's Biography" these events all really happened to him. There was a "Dorothy".
After the movie came out Herman the author received 6 letters from fans who claimed to be Dorothy. One of those 6 was the real Dorothy, Herman knew because he recognized the "handwriting" and that Dorothy knew details that only the Real Dorothy could know. But Dorothy closed the fan letter by saying, "it's best they not re-visit the past". aka not meetup again. And they let it lie.
After the filming of the movie, the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a success, and they asked Herman to make the script into a book and write a book based on the script. Herman agreed and finished the book in 2-weeks.
The Book "Summer of 42" was an Instant Bestseller. Hence the movie Trailer and advertising posters said, "Based on the Bestseller Summer of 42".
The movie itself was an Instant hit also becoming that years (1971) sleeper hit raking in $43 million. The movie was made for a paltry $1 million budget and was actually filmed up in Mendocino, CA up northern CA between Eureka (near Oregon border) and San Francisco even though it was based on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts where Herman use to spend his summers. Packett Island (where the book and movie mention) was a made-up location, it doesn't exist. Because the producers weren't sure if the movie would be a hit they didn't pay Herman but offered him 10% of earnings which was a windfall for Herman because he says between the movie and book proceeds it continues to pay his bills to today. The book has gone into 4 re-prints because the book sold out. You can get the book on Amazon for $2 plus shipping.
Jennifer O'Neill for her part the movie 'made' her and she was in high demand after this movie both as a model and actress. Jennifer led a storied life with 8 marriages. She almost died 3 times. Overdose attempt at age of 15 from heartsick because her parents wouldn't let her keep her pet dog and cat. Then she's an Equestrian and during a jump with a horse, the horse fell on her and broke her neck/back in 3 places. Then a gun accidentally discharged and nearly killed her. For 30 years she was Cover Girl for their line of cosmetics. And led a storied life. Jenn later bought the rights to Summer of 42' and wanted to make a Sequel but nothing became of it.
There are 3 things that made this movie.
      1. The wonderful script. Those words were actually said and done because it was Herman Raucher (Hermie's) Biography. That summer of 42' happened to him.
      2. Jennifer O'Neill made the movie, her sensitive portrayal of Dorothy was amazing. You could see the bags under her eyes in the bedroom scene where she was actually crying.
      3. The Haunting Music score by French composer Michel Legrand. For which they won the Oscar for best Original Score in 1972.
